Considering there are no actual games being played, it's still too early to call. That is, unless Nintendo flat-out says it won't support 2 tablet controllers at all. At that point, I would expect the **** storm to descendeth upon Nintendo. That might actually convince them to make the change.

It has rounded edges, so they did cut corners.
I see what you did there. 1 internet point for you.

But his designs in Dissidia weren't covered in zippers. He stuck pretty close to Amano's designs and they looked awesome. He's also been involved with the Final Fantasy series since IV so he worked on both V and VI.

Hypothetical Question: Could WiiU potentially confuse casual gamers?

When Reggie was announcing the console, my first reaction was "Oh ****, they're going to call it 'WiiU.' Don't say it. Don't say it. ****, he said it." Then, I was confused for a second because he seemed to be talking about the controller as a peripheral for the Wii. Obviously, it's not. However, the WiiU branding may confuse people who aren't well-versed in gaming, namely casual gamers.

On one hand, I think it's a good thing that all of the peripherals carry over. That's clearly the easiest way to introduce non-gamers to new hardware. It's certainly cost effective for everyone who already owns a Wii console.

On the other hand, some may ask why they would even need new hardware. Specifically, they may wonder why they can't just buy the tablet controller for the Wii they already own. Don't scoff at this. People are that fucking stupid.

Releasing new peripherals would allow Nintendo to make improvements on the remote, balance board etc. where needed. Additionally, since Nintendo wants to keep the Wii brand (with good reason, at least for the casual crowd), I kind of feel like "Wii 2" would have been a better choice. I'm not saying this because I hate "WiiU" because, let's be honest here, Wii 2 sounds stupid too. WiiU almost doesn't sound new hardware and that could potentially be a problem come launch. It sounds like something for the original Wii like Wii Sports, Wii Fit or anything labelled Wii something. Wii 2 is sequential. 2 comes after 1. As silly as it still sounds, it does get the point across more.

The value seeker in me loves the fact that I don't have to pay extra for new peripherals. As someone who has previously worked retail for many years, I'm weary of how general consumers are going to view WiiU. Is it new? Is it an add-on? Obviously, it's still early but I thought this was an interesting point of discussion.

The system isn't coming out for a while and it looked pretty early into the design stage, I mean they didn't even have any actual games to show. So I think that as Nintendo starts to create games for the system, they will considering adding support for another screen controller. I don't know if they'll make it be up to four, but probably will allow for two once all is said and done.
Streaming content to an additional controller is more of a hardware issue. Nintendo needs to make that decision sooner rather than later because there's only so much time for IBM and AMD to alter their designs. Microsoft did something similar with 360 when they doubled the RAM at the 11th hour. The problem is that eventually these chips need to start being manufactured so Nintendo really has to get on the ball. Additionally, it allows 3rd parties to plan their games around it.

Besides it is a mock up, I doubt it will end up looking the same when it is released.
That's what I was thinking, especially with the sync button on the outside. Not that it's a dealbreaker, but the face of the console seems so disorganized. Nintendo downplayed the actual console so maybe we'll see some changes to the design. They have a whole year to make some tweaks, minor or otherwise.

Yes.

They should remake FFV first though. Honestly, I'd love to see them cel-shaded and use a similar art style to Dissidia where Tetsura Nomura based the designs on Yoshitaka Amamo's original artwork. In fact, I'd rather see this on a home console. I love Final Fantasy VI. I'd buy a remake day one.

I'm using a Macbook Pro and some of the gestures on the touchpad require multitouch. Scrolling, for example, requires 2 finger swipes simulatneously.

I'm not sure you'll really need multi-touch in a videogame especially since, like MorbidGod said, the controller has actual buttons.

It sounds like the 3DS version is going to be more of a single player focused game
What the **** is the point of that? The only reason I played the single player mode in past Smash Bros. games was so I could unlock ****. The vast majority of Smash Bros. fans only care about Free-For-All and possibly the Special Multiplayer Modes. In Brawl, the Subspace Emissary was utter garbage and since that was the easiest way to unlock characters, that made the Solo Mode even more useless. Just focus on multiplayer, online and local, and they stand to please 99% of the fanbase.

It doesn't make sense to have a controller for one person.
I agree. However, Nintendo does a lot of things that don't make sense. 1 slide pad on 3DS? /never-ending facepalm

My hope is that Nintendo figures this out somehow even if it means spending millions to have IBM and AMD modify the chipsets. In the longrun, Nintendo stands to make that up that money and then some. They absolutely must be able to support 2 tablet controllers. I think most people can live with 2 tablet controllers per console, especially with online multiplayer at the same time.

I tend to rest my arm on my legs or one arm on the arm of the couch so I don't think I'll have any issues either way. All the impressions I've read say that the controller is very light and if that's the case, playing for extended periods shouldn't be an issue. At the same time, there's no point in worrying about this considering no one will be playing this for extended periods until it launches.

I find local 2 player co-op/splitscreen to be far more desirable anyway. Besides party games like Wii Sports, it tends to get cramped once 4 players become involved. For more players, online is definitely the way to go and you wouldn't have to worry about additional tablet controllers. 2 tablet controllers for local multiplayer is a must and I would gladly pay a little extra if Nintendo had to bump up the specs to make it happen.

I'd give them a B. The Wii U announcement was standard affair. I wasn't expecting any major game announcements. They unveiled the console and controller. On that front, things seem good for the most part besides the possible one screen controller per console thing. That decision would be a major failure in otherwise strong hardware.

Anyway, Nintendo lost major points for announcing next to NOTHING for Wii except Zelda. That hurts. Also, the 3DS lineup wasn't especially thrilling. They're all console games that don't particularly play on the strengths of the 3DS. DS had unique games and traditional games. I'm waiting for Nintendo to give me a reason to really, really, really want to buy 3DS for its originality rather than wanting to buy it eventually because I buy all hardware eventually.

You probably have to buy it straight from Nintendo through their website. My one cat chewed through the wire of my sensor bar so I bought one from Nintendo since they don't sell official ones in stores. It was $15. I ended up just getting a wireless sensor bar by Nyko anyway to prevent anymore cat-related mishaps.

No, they're not changing the name. I'm pretty much used to it, typing it is still pretty weird because I don't know how to stylize it. Is it Wii U or WiiU or Wii-U? Gah... The only things that may change are slight changes to the controller (nothing major, I'd say something like how the original Wii remote was shorter and the Nunchuck had a larger plug) and possibly the design of the console. Unlike every other piece of hardware they've released in the past 15 years, Nintendo made a point of not emphasizing the WiiU console itself. That may suggest that it's not final. Again, nothing really major. At the same time, the original DS revealed at E3 2004 was far from final so I guess you never know.

In sports titles like Madden, that may require passing the screen controller to the player on offense. (Edit: someone beat me to this...)

As I said in another thread, the console needs to be capable of supporting at least 2 screen controllers so multiplayer is even possible with those sweet, sweet screen controllers. Preferably, I'd like to see 4 player support but I'd be happy with 2 on a single console.

These were great impressions. Probably the best I've read. I'd applaud you but I'm currently at work and replying on my phone. I know you're itching for that +1. I'll make a mental note to applaud this later. :)

I really hope Wii U is capable of handling more than 1 screen controller at a time, at least 2 but preferably 4. I'd be okay with 2. This would certainly require a really powerful CPU. If the new controller is the big selling point and WiiU is positioned mainly as console to be enjoyed with others, allowing more than 1 screen controller is a must. Using the controller as the main screen is only needed for single player games, however. I consider that a bonus. Asking multiplayer games to be capable of streaming to multiple screen controllers is perhaps asking too much.

I got used to calling it Cafe. I even got used to seeing it referred to as Stream. WiiU sounds silly, but I won't lose sleep over it.

I can see why Nintendo wouldn't want to do away with the Wii brand, especially since all of its peripherals carry over. The U part is what everyone seems to have issues with. At least Wii sounds like a real word. WiiU just reminds me of that awful movie Kung Pow: Enter the Fist.

I'm not really sure why Nintendo is so attached to symbolic nomenclature. They come up with a philosophy and meaning behind the names, but you can come up with something no matter what you call it. "Stream" is a really easy name to come up with some BS meaning. If I were to keep the Wii name in tact, I would have called it "Wii Tour" and my silly philosophy would involve "touring" your house with the controller. Get it? I also have this idea for a "Jump To Conclusions" mat. You see, it would be this mat that you would put on the floor and would have different conclusions written on it that you could jump to.

Nintendoi would also work and they could just reuse the DSi's philosophy. They wouldn't even need to come up with something new.

Ok it has a big screen on the controller to wow people but honestly how many developers are going to take full advantage of it?
What qualifies as taking full advantage of it?
