Title: Is there a way we could give users a notification when they're mentioned on site
Post by: Phil on October 15, 2016, 08:08:51 PM
On GameTZ, a game trading forum I use, I saw that when people post something like "@Khushrenada", a notification would pop up for them, letting them know they were mentioned in a post. This could be useful for topics that a user might want to call someone in on for an opinion or something. It'd be great for forum games where turns are used, so a notification could be sent to the user when their turn was up.

Dunno how hard this would be to code/implement, or even if the idea has any value. I guess PMs could work, but that seems like more effort to do for the user than just a notification and typing "@whoever"."

Also, Steefosaurus and I had issue with the overwhelming amount of seldomly used forums that could be fused together to make the site seem less empty and more active. Additionally, there are a lot of pinned/stickied topics that are quite ancient (not including Khush's daily pinning of an old topic in the Funhouse).

I don't think that can be done with the type of Forum Software the site has. It is an SMF design. When I became a moderator, I started doing some reading up on the code to find out if it might be possible to do some things like bring back color to forum titles and other kinds of features on the old PGC type forums but I discovered I'd need to be an admin level user to possible create such things and, even then, the code just doesn't quite allow that.

In my New Leaf heyday, I joined up with a site called Neoseeker and was using their forums to arrange for in game trades. I know that forum has such a feature where you can use things like @khushrenada to send notices to users because I had to find out how to shut that stuff off to keep it from piling up in my email account. Neoseeker's forums use a phpBB code and design which is different from NWR's. So, that code seems to allow for that type of thing. They could even put banners on pages with their forum design.

The forums here are just pretty basic and ultimately the code used for them will keep it that way. So, for such features to occur, the entire forum would have to switch over to a new type of software.

As for old stickied topics, I think we are doing alright in that regard. Being able to join the moderator ranks, I've done a bit of weeding on them already. I don't like to see anything past 4 topics stickied (and even then, 4 seems to much) but, right now, I think the stickied topics in the forums are all worthy enough to have their stickied status. (aside from Miiverse posts but I don't want to step on any toes there). That said, if you have some recommendations, feel free to make them. I love having another opinion I can point to besides my own which will allow me to make changes on this forum. (Unless I don't agree with it.)  ;)

Thanks for the explanation on the coding stuff! I'm no good with ANY of that kind of stuff!

Definitely read Steefosaurus's feedback on the site in the other suggestion topic I made. His thoughts sort of mirror my own.

I'm currently working on a reply to it as we speak.
