TGS is in late September, but Nintendo's not attending. Iwata's not even showing up for one of his traditional speech-hijackings. He's handed that honor over to Ken Kutaragi, who will make a presentation about "Why the world needs a Sony monopoly."

Shoshinkai/Spaceworld would've been in September, but Nintendo's not doing those anymore (and they don't have one coming this year, at least).

I'm pretty sure Nintendo's never going to tell us the release date or price. Non-gamers don't care about launch days. They just walk into the store, and if they see one and want it, they buy one. We're just going to walk into a store some day in late September, see a Wii, and say "Holy Crap!" Then Nintendo will say "Oh yeah, our big announcement. Wii launch date is last week sometime."

On the subject of the "new E3", it seems weird to me how everyone in the media's looking forward to it, when press conferences and closed-door showings have been around since before E3 began (which some press are saying will be the reason nothing will be different). E3 is just losing the show floor now, not gaining anything. You mentioned that the big three were able to dominate your time over three days, but how will it be if they invite you to their new closed-door conferences (assming they actually have playable material there)? I think that with sepeate invites, the little guys might become even more isolated and unknown than they were before.

And you mentioned that E3 wasn't as big or well known as the San Diego Comic-Con. But that's because it's not open to the public. Everyone seems to be bringing up complaints lately about how there are so many people who shouldn't have been allowed to go to E3, but for years I kept hearing about how impossible it was for a fan to get in, and how the ESA's been making it harder with every year.

I think that if they were to have opened up E3 to the public, it would've very quickly exploded in terms of popularity, and they could've just given reporters press passes for special access.

Yeah. Five hundred and ninety nine US dollars for this crap?

http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/79/metalgearsolid420050915072838293zb3.jpg

What a joke. I don't know why I even brought it up. $230 for a current-gen conslole with "fun injection" technology a much better deal.

Edit: Removed pic that's too HD for Nintendo.

Since nobody mentioned it, the bits removed from the IGN story were the specifics about the Broadway chip, the underclocked Wee Wii (or whatever you want to call it) handheld, and the bumped production number.

And I really don't think I need to tell anyone what I think of the idea of paying $230 for what yet another article suggests is merely an overclocked GameCube (with maybe some extras).

aren't they doing another Xenosaga?

Nope, unless you mean #3 which comes out in America at the end of this month.

Xenosaga was originally supposed to be six games, but #2 didn't do as well as Namco expected, so they turned #3 into the end of the series. Xenogears was #5 in the "Xeno" saga that Monolith came up with when they were working for Square, but since Square owns Xenogears they said they'd have to re-write #5 by the time they got up to it (and the series would likely have evolved differently by that point anyways).

I do wonder what's up with the Monolith/Nintendo love. The Xeno series has done a lot more for Monolith than Baten Kaitos could even hope to do. Not that I'm complaing. As long as they don't waste their time making sports games.

Camelot president Hiroyuki Takahashi expects G-Planet to be its next big thing. "SCE (Sony Computer Entertainment) said that the first Minna no Golf (Hot Shots Golf) wouldn't sell more than 80,000, but in the end it recorded sales of 2.4 million," he recalled at the press conference. Noting how a Nintendo of America manager had once referred to the company as "Columbus, who discovers unopened markets," he added, "We're once again becoming Columbus and taking off on the great seas in search of a new continent. We're confident that ahead of us, there lay a continent larger than Mario Tennis."

Surely you don't advocate that Nintendo place themselves in the same position as Microsoft and Sony, hemorraghing money or looking at breaking even in 5 years?

I think I've explained a few times that that's not my position. Although I do think that to remain competetive, it's been proven that Nintendo would have to be insane not to take a <$50 loss on the hardware. But of course, Nintendo thinks (and knows) that they can get away without doing a lot of things.

Quote

Like I stated previously the Xbox still runs for 150$ and that is for the bare bones version, so what is so horrifying about the Wii being 50$ more when it is not only more powerful (how much so remains to be seen) but will most likely be bundled with extras.

Anyone who buys an original Xbox right now is a freaking moron. How you can think that's good for the Wii is beyond me.

The extras are "added value" items that have high profit margins and just increase the profits while giving you the illusion that you're actually getting something of value. I'm not happy with the idea of increasing the Wii's MSRP by $50 just so Nintendo can toss a tech-demo Wii Sports game into the box in a $0.99 DVD in a paper sleeve.

Quote

P.S. I thought Moore's law applied to processer speed?

I thought that was all Wii had over the Cube.

Quote

Ooh. Good points. I wonder how MS can justify their $40 dollar wired controller and $50 wireless one. Unlike Nintendo, they didn't spend 2+ years experimenting to make that thing.

The controller is the price that'll deliver as much profit as they think they can get away with.

Nintendo: Okay, here's what we've got. We're calling them "Wii Sports" now. Don't you just love the new look? BTW, you're going to have to rename your game now. We suggest you call it "Golden Wee".

Resident Evil 4 by no means is ugly and that's only a mere Gamecube game, if I can expect better than that, you won't hear a peep out of me about the Wii's technical prowess.

My question to everybody: At what point did not as good as Microsoft and Sony become ugly? It's funny but I think the people who love Nintendo the most are the harshest on Nintendo's decisions.

I never said Wii or GameCube games were ugly. I was responding to someone who said that all he cared about was how the games played, not how they looked.

I consider R&D to be a one-time investment in Nintendo's vision of the future, not a material cost of the hardware. And Nintendo has always had that running. It comes out of Nintendo's (very healthy) bottom line. Did SNES owners have to pay for the botched SNES CD? Were we paying an increased price for the N64 hardware because of the 64DD, or experiments with analog? Of course not. How about the Virtual Boy development? Which console paid for that one? Was the GameCube hardware expensive because of all that "connectivity" reasearch? Of course, Iwata has been talking about making us pay for it this time.

The X360 must cost somewhere around $450 to manufacture, but a $150 loss on each unit is still quite below what analysts have guessed the situation is. And Microsoft lost $6 billion last gen, and are ready to lose another $6 billion this time around: they're only expecting their games division to profit with their third console. Sony likewise has said that when all is said and done, it will take them 5 years to break even on the PS3, much like it took them 5 years to break even on the PS2.

With hardware getting this expensive, for both manufacturer's AND consumers, it can easily be imagined that XBox 360 graphics come at too high a cost for all involved.

It's one year in, an MS is rumored to be considering a $100 price cut. That'd be $200 for the Retard Pack. And looking at the price speculation threads, some of you are lining up to pay $250 for Wii hardware that isn't even in the same league as it. Yes, MS is losing money on the Xbox360 hardware. But they've also got a number of extras that would be cut in a Nintendo console, like a hard drive, HD, and a headset with two of those terribly expensive speakers and a microphone.

Would you agree that the GameCube hit the "sweet spot" in terms of the most power for your money? And that it came in at $200? Moore's Law says that computers can double in strength every 18 months (yes, I know, it doesn't exactly apply to every situation). I don't see how anyone can think that five years later, a GameCube x2, at $200-250 is the best hardware Nintendo could possibly hope for.

/sigh. I still can't get over how many people discount the 19th solely because it's after the PS3 launch. I wish someone would take a bet from me.

Actually, back in Jan 2003, Iwata said that the only reason the PS2 beat the GameCube was because they had a one-year head start.

Then at E3 2003...
Quote

Iwata returned to conclude the event, and stated that Nintendo's next home console is already in development, categorically and adamantly stating that their competitors would not beat them to market this time. This came as a mix of excitement and sadness - as, in many ways, it was a rather blatant, official declaration that GameCube is dead, quite soon.

Then when MS revealed the Xbox360's date, he "clarified" that he was only referring to Sony, and not Microsoft. That the Revolution would beat the PS3 to the shelves.

Nintendo might not follow through on the claim, and they already let MS get a year head start, but Iwata said it.

"It costs 200 and hardly looks better than the GC."  So f*cking what.  We're paying for the interface on the premise that it makes games better to play, and frankly I'd rather get a cheaper console that gives me that than getting an Xbox 1.5 or a PS2 1.5.

This might be because I have this crazy notion that I like how my games play, not how they look.

The accelerometers in the Wiimote are supposedly commonly available for around five bucks apiece. Two in the Wiimote. Probably another two in the nunchuck (which we might chalk up to an inadequate main remote). Infared LEDs and sensors are really cheap. Maybe an extra $20 added to the price because of the new controller functionality. Which is probably all that they saved by going with technology that's 18 months more advanced than the GameCube, when they could've made it five years more advanced (the point of diminishing returns goes both ways).

But if you like your fun games to be ugly (or MIA), then I'm sure you'll be happy with Nintendo's decision.

Next gen consoles are supposed to have a nearly-exponential increase in power. How they want to use that power is up to the devs. If ragdoll physics are their thing, then good for them.

Power costs money, but every year there's a new "sweet spot" where you get the most bang for your buck. I think Microsoft may have hit that point (graphically speaking) with the 360. But then they wasted some money by pushing it a little further so you could do those same things in HD (which they made manditory). I think Sony likely went too far with the PS3.

I think that Nintendo, coming in one year later and not adopting HD (although I still think it should be an option), should've been able to match MS's output at a significantly lower price, but by most accounts (even from Nintendo) it's not even in the same ballpark. They've aimed much lower than the sweet spot, and we don't even know if Nintendo's going to pass those savings they squeezed out of it down to us. A GameCube with 2x the CPU speed and 2x the RAM at 2x the price is not a deal. If it's $99, then yes, I'll be amazed. But nobody's predicting that, not even here.

You mentioned on page 1 that there are inherent tradeoffs in buying only one console. That we won't get MGS4 or FFXIII. We didn't get MGS2 and 3 because Konami didn't want to give them. We didn't get FFX and XII because Square didn't want to give them. The Wii is supposed to be all about changing people's minds about Nintendo, but even if they do change people's minds, we still won't get FF and MGS (in their current forms) because the Wii is incapable of accepting them. That's something that's not inherent to creativity or to Nintendo (N64 cartridge blunder aside).

TalkBack / RE: E3 Scales Down
« on: July 31, 2006, 01:16:04 PM »
So first Nintendo cancels Shoshinkai/Spaceworld (the original videogame trade show which they invented back when they invented Nintendo Power, the original videogame magazine), because they say you need to experience the GameCube "hands on" in order to believe it. And that they can't afford to put on their own show anymore, since they lost all their third party attendance with the N64.

Then they don't join TGS, because apparently because putting on all those Fusion Tours leaves Nintendo with less money than... let's say... HAMSTER Corporation.

Then after that strategy generally fails, they say they won't go to TGS or bring back Spaceworld, because they'd rather focus all their money on E3. And because they only have enough big guns to unload once a year anyways.

Then after a few years of that, they finally win an E3, despite holding back most of their info because they say the non-people who aren't interested in games aren't watching E3 and aren't interested in it (which doesn't even make sense), and they decide that it wasn't worth going to E3 (despite everyone now talking about how Nintendo might take first place this gen, instead of a distant third). And we're supposed to believe that they're going to use the money they save by not going to E3 to let us have some personal "hands on" time with the Wii in order to believe it.

And IIRC, wasn't Nintendo initially opposed to the creation of E3, insisting that CES was sufficent, even though a year previous they had been the only ones threatening to pull out of CES?

The problem here is that Free Radical (among many others) has moved on to making next-gen games, and Nintendo didn't make a next-gen console (instead making an enhanced current-gen console, and giving it a "new-gen" copout excuse).

And Free Radical isn't making GameCube games anymore, because Iwata told developers that it was pointless a couple years ago.

You could just visit NOA HQ. The only difference is that it would be all videogames, and no crappy bands. And that they'd more likely toss you off the property than let you in (just like a REAL club).

The fourth reprinting of Phoenix Wright was supposed to ship on the 25th, but NCSX says that it didn't, and that Capcom told them to wait for Aug 7 or 8. I'm guessing Capcom decided to stiff NCSX, since they already know they want them, and sent the whole batch out to the major retail chains instead. The last reprint batch showed up in small numbers at EB stores in Canada, at least.

I'm guessing Artimus lucked out and got there right when they put their single copy out on the shelf.

There's a huge gap between the fan-media and the "real" media, and these analysts are a great (and underused) tool for the real media.

Personally, I think that any developer/publisher worth their salt should've been interested in the Wii long before E3, because they get even better info than we do, but then again I think Nintendo deserves some blame for keeping so many major details in the dark.

We've got a "Dream Team" of one this time, and the Wiimote was still stolen. Yay for secrecy! When's the Wii launching again? What's it's MSRP? How powerful is it? We're well past the point when the important details were supposed to come out (which we were led to believe was E3), so I wouldn't really blame developers/publishers for still being reluctant to jump on the bandwagon.

And Nintendo's still boycotting TGS (even if they had nothing new to show, they could've done a rerun of E3 for all the people who missed it because of the line). And they apparently think that the Fusion Tour is a good substitute for Spaceworld.

General Chat / RE: how do i put videos on the internet?
« on: July 20, 2006, 03:24:37 PM »
YouTube and (if it works the same way) Google Video suck because they recompress your files into "flash video" format, which does nasty things to your picture quality (and probably not much good for your filesize), just so that you can play it in a web browser running the right flash program (and nothing else). It's nice to be able to find obscure things thanks to YouTube, but it sucks that it makes it harder to find/preserve them in decent quality.

If your video is smaller than 100MB, you can zip it up with WinZip or WinRAR and upload it to Rapidshare. If it's bigger than 100MB, you can use WinRAR to split it up and upload the seperate pieces. Then all you have to do is give people the "download link". It expires, so it's only good for a limited time. But it's more convenient for smaller items than BitTorrent.

On the subject of the Wii's D-pad and single button, I think the issue here is that "secondary" inputs have always sucked. The analogs on the Dual Shock. The D-pad and C-stick on the cube. Of course, some things make the problem worse than others (like the puny size of the Cube's D-pad). I think the Wii has the right idea in putting them close to one another, but the "freehand" style will do more to make it harder to shift your hand position than anything we've seen.

I'd like to see a D-pad on one end of the Wiimote, and a set of four buttons on the other end, so you could flip it around to make good use of either method. But I don't expect Nintendo to make any changes to it's design.
