Yes, yes... I can see why your computer freezes. I think you are overclocking and the cpu just can't handle the heat.

Time to install some liquid cooling.

I knew someone would comment on the content of the linked thread instead of the possible problem.
I almost edited in a comment of my own just to beat anyone else to it, but why not let you have your fun?

So any ideas on what is loading that would make my computer freeze?

'll keep clicking things and see what other threads make it freeze so you have more than one sample.

It was freezing in both IE & FF, but now it loads in both.

I used to have this same problem with my old computer, but all my hardware is new and I barely have some of the same software as before. Is there another program that can detect software incompatibility?

Have you ran a virus scan?
It might be something using up all your RAM. Do Ctrl+dAlt+Del, check the processes and see if you see anything unusual.

I have McAfee it finds nothing
Malwarebytes finds nothing
trojan finder finds nothing
Adaware finds nothing
that MS onecare scanner... nothing

I just uninstalled azureus(utorrent replaced it) and restarted before trying that thread again. do you think that could be a reason why it didn't freeze?
Azurues & AdAware are the only two programs that were brought over from my old computer, besides the same disc of windows that I used to install the OS

Rather then start a new thread, I have a problem. Due to a lack of funds, I got a 2GB memory card from PNY (it was $6.50, although I think I should have spent the extra $3.50 to get a 2GB SanDisk card). Besides the problem copying Wii files to it (only some of my Virtual Console games can be copied or moved), the bigger problem is with my PC. When I put it into my laptop, nothing happens. It doesn't recognize the card at all, I know my laptop reads SD cards because I used to have a 512MB SanDisk brand SD card before it was stolen. Any suggestions?

when you say freezes, does it hardlock so the the keyboard and mouse don't respond? What type of CPU do you have?

Advanced Performance Series CPU: Intel P4 641 3.2GHz

It doesn't appear to be directly from Intel (Tiger Direct refurbished?), my next CPU will be brand new in an Intel box, no excuses.

Looks like a good deals. Seems people are saying it has features that newer models are missing. BTW, NewEgg has it at the same price with free shipping.

I'm assuming you looked it up just now, so do you have a link?
Does anyone know if a CPU comes with that coolant gel, or do I have to get more for the CPU switch??

I haven't seen CPUs come with gel, but they should come with a packet of heatsink grease. Is that what you're talking about?

yeah, the heat sink grease. I forgot what it was called.

Would you recommend a certain type over another?

And is there any difference between Dual Core and Core2Duo other than branding?

Whatever you want to call it, it should be in the box if you buy the retail version.  There's generally no reason to buy anything else.

Last time I did a cpu install, my friend brought his own grease and said it was way better than the stuff the cpu had come with. That's why I asked.

But is there any real difference between Dual Core & Core2Duo? Cause I kinda wanted a Core2Duo just because it sounds better... damn marketing.

Thermal Paste is typically Lithium Grease. This is a compound that will not dry but stay liquid or semi-liquid for a long time. The purpose of Thermal paste is to conduct heat from the CPU to the heatsink. The liquid fills in any microscopic gaps between processor and heat sink so that you don't get any pockets of extremely hot air against the CPU.

While Lithium Grease is white in color there are other heatsink compound variants. A popular variation is silver based thermal grease which uses Silver as its base ingredient. Silver is a highly heat conductive metal and the theory is that it will transfer heat more efficiently. They also make Copper and Gold based thermal compounds.

Most new heat sinks ship with a packet of paste or a pre-applied layer of compound. There are also thermal tape variants which are more solid but serve the same purpose; to give full contact on the surface of the chip and to conduct the heat.

A thing to keep in mind when dealing with Thermal paste is you often want to remove the old paste and apply new when installing a new processor. This ensures full contact. Chemical removal of previous Thermal compound is recommended as removing with a razor blade has the risk of put a nick in your heat sink, which can lead to a heat pocket.

Another important item when dealing with the new application of grease is not to apply too much. This is a common mistake. You only need a thin layer over the top of the CPU (1mm thick) Too thick a layer of thermal compound causes the grease to act as an insulator rather than a conductor. A tiny packet of thermal compound has enough grease for a dozen processors.

The grease thing is kind of like Monster branded cables.  The products target the same enthusiasts who like blue LEDs in their power supplies.

I have no idea what the technical differences are, but Wikipedia says:
Quote
In terms of features, price and performance at a given clock frequency, Pentium Dual-Core processors are positioned above Celeron but below Core and Core 2 microprocessors in Intel's product range.

I did a little sleuthing on my own, and it seems the only differences is power consumption, as Core Duo & Core2Duo were designed with use in laptops in mind.

I don't know how accurate that is, but I really don't know who to ask.

and after some looking around on newegg... I think I might have picked a winner

only $40 more. You think its worth the extra $40 or should I just get the other one?

Core 2 Duo is the newer generation of dual core cpus from Intel. They have an improved architecture that has better performance. With the same specs, a Core 2 Duo is slightly faster due to the optimization.
