Title: Man, Amazon has great customer service
Post by: Oblivion on April 13, 2013, 04:41:47 AM
I signed up for Amazon Student a little while ago, getting six months free of Amazon Prime. Somehow in the next five minutes, I canceled the free trial and started up the discounted Amazon Prime service ($39/year), according to the customer service.

I obviously wanted my free trial back so I called them up and told them the situation. The guy originally said that he could not give me the trial back (that it was impossible) and that the only way to get my 39 dollars back was to cancel the service, that, too, I did not want. I basically thanked him for helping me, and was about to hang up when he asked if he could put me on hold and talk to his supervisor. He came back about five minutes later saying that he was given the go ahead to not only refund my 39 dollars, but give me a year of Prime free at that 39 dollar price.

Now, while the guy didn't seem to happy about that (if he didn't want that to happen he shouldn't have said something) and made sure to remind me that they don't normally do this, but I'm happy that his supervisor helped me out.

They do.

Until you get banned.

Then, they suck.

How do you get banned from Amazon?

That's the billion dollar question.  Google it - you'll read all kinds of horror stories of getting banned from Amazon.  And Amazon is a vindictive bunch - you get banned and they'll never give you an official reason.  Once you're banned, you're banned for life - if there's any hint of you opening another account, they close it.  Stories of friends and families having their accounts shut down for being affiliated with a banned account at some point.  You lose access to any of your digital purchases.  It's scary sounding stuff.

So you fucked up and accidentally cancel your trial membership, and they reward you by giving you a full year of it free? That doesnt really seem fair to them. At most, they should have given you 6 months of it free only (to match the trial time).

LOL, i have never heard of anyone being banned from Amazon. You have to really violate their rules badly to make that happen.

TJ - You've never heard of it happening, and that makes you the expert on what it takes to make it happen?

I didnt say I was an expert. But i dont see how u can be banned unless u repeatedly screw people on Amazon Marketplace, use a stolen credit card to buy stuff, or constantly make racist/hate remarks in reviews.

I just thought I'd share the two instances where Amazon Customer Services went out of their way to help me.

I traded in Kid Icarus: Uprising to Amazon via post. I did something incredibly stupid though, as I didn't ask for a receipt when I sent it off through the post office. The item never arrived at Amazon (damn postal service!) but they agreed to apply the credit any way. Which I thought was really good of them.

More recently I also traded in pretty much all my Wii games (with the exception of Metroid Prime Trilogy and the Galaxy games). I wanted to get some money for them while I still could, as my intention is to but a next generation console sometime in 2014. When I traded the games in though I did not read the terms and conditions, which state that credit is only valid for 12 months. I emailed Amazon and told them that I had wanted to use the credit some time in April or May of 2014, and I asked if they could extend the validity period of the credit. They agreed and extended the credit to 2015.

Those are just two instances. There have been many more occasions where I have also found them to be very helpful, even when dealing with third party sellers.

That's a bit random pokepal. Be more selective with your proddings, like giving TJ more ****.

sorry for the necro-bump, but I didn't want to start a new topic just to vent a quick thought....

Sometimes I hate shopping on Amazon, as I will spend 20-30 minutes searching for something... decide that I've found the best version close enough to what I was looking for, and pull the trigger and purchase it.

then suddenly in the "suggested" items (either right afterwards, or while searching something else a few days later), is something much closer to what I was actually looking for.

where were these items after I typed in everything I could to tweak my searches and scrolled though pages and pages of similar items before settling for something that was "good/close enough".

now I have to decide on keeping what I already opened, or do I buy the replacement and repackage and send back all the other stuff. :/

edit: due to the fact that I was looking around some more, and now came across something that makes returning the previous stuff even more worth it, I pulled the trigger a second time. My daughter had fun setting everything up the first time, hopefully she'll have fun doing it again this weekend. LOL
alexa compatibility (something I wasn't aware I could have in what I was looking for) was the deal sealer.

Yeah, thankfully Amazon tends to have a great return policy. We send back stuff all the time. But we buy plenty from them so I'm sure it makes up for the return expenses they are incurring. It makes clothing purchases more easy to make online since you essentially get to "try it on" and return it if it doesn't fit like you thought it would.

And to necro-answer an old question in this thread: they gave away the full year for cheap/free because their goal is to get you hooked on their service/system. Once you enter it becomes harder for you to quit them.

I recently switched overt o a student account, and I pretty much had to do it by cancelling my old one.  I kinda wish they made that easier, and I hope I don't get banned.  Forgot that was a risk, but I wonder if it still is.

I've used their return service in the past, and it is truly great.  I like that a lot of stuff I buy comes in one of those resealable envelopes.  I used to be worried about buying clothes online, but their wardrobe thing (I forgot the actual name) gives me the sufficient comfort to do so.  Other outlets I'll actually go to, try on some stuff to get the feel of how they fit, and then order it online when I see a sale.

Amazon Prime Shipping seeing delivery delays of upto a MONTH!!?
https://www.vox.com/recode/2020/3/22/21190372/amazon-prime-delivery-delays-april-21-coronavirus-covid-19

I hope Beezos puts a pause on PRIME Membership fees during the crisis, even if it comes with other perks. I initially got if for next day/2day free shipping. Items I've ordered last week that were Prime Shipping eligible all have about a 5-7 day delivery date so far.
I check out Prime video from time to time, but that's not what I'm paying for, just an added perk for the free express shipping.

I heard about that last week, but we ordered some non-essential stuff from them last week and received it early (was due Friday, arrived Thursday). Maybe we got our orders in before they called the cut-off?

Up to a month? Yikes!

I knew they were de-prioritizing the non-essentials, but that's a lot.

I try to accept the slower shipping times whenever reasonable because I like applying those $1 digital goods credits on Nintendo eShop cards.

I'm looking at an item today.... Prime Shipping (they may as well not even say Prime, just say Free Shipping).... expected delivery date: May 11th - June 18th

So much for building out my Quarantine Compound. It'll all be over by the time I get what I was waiting for. LOL
