An often-requested rare title from the Nintendo 64 will hit Virtual Console for Wii U in both North America and Europe this week.

Harvest Moon 64 will release on Thursday for standard N64 Virtual Console pricing ($9.99 in NA, €9.99/£8.99 in Europe/UK). The US version will release on both stores, and this Wii U release will be the first time the game launched in Europe.

Unspecified technical issues prevented the game from releasing on the Wii.

Definitely cheaper than getting a used cart. We don't have this one in our N64 collection. I'd love to see the N64 Bomberman games come to the VC, whether Wii U or Switch. Our family owns both, but The Second Attack is so underrated, and it's like $130 used for just the cart!

$130 for Bomberman 2?!? Wow, I missed the boat on that one.


Thankfully I picked up a copy of Harvest Moon 64 for about $20 off ebay a few years ago. That and Orge Battle 64 were two games I am glad I went back to scoop up.

Harvest Moon is probably still one of the best in the series.

My older brother and my first Harvest Moon we purchased was A Wonderful Life on GameCube. I actually haven't played an entry yet, despite owning that and the second 3DS game, as well as Story of Seasons! Ah! I'm so far behind! (A nice problem to have, though!)

I found out my Gamecube Component cables that I bought for $15 were worth $400 used.  I might sell them and buy a Nintendo Switch. Though, I actually use them.

I have tremendous nostalgia for this game, it was the first one I owned in a series that became one of my favorites, but in all honesty it's a fairly weak and barebones entry even by the standards of the time. It's missing a fair amount of features, such as the entire cooking mechanic, that were in the PlayStation entry Harvest Moon: Back to Nature, which was remade for GBA as Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town, which is also on the Virtual Console, so if you're itching for Harvest Moon on Wii U definitely buy that instead of this, it's a much better game.

I'll probably get this, and probably feel similar nostalgia for it even from playing it for the first time. There's just a warm feeling I get when playing SNES all the way to PS2 era games.

This is interesting. What are you turned off on by Story of Seasons? When it came out, everyone seemed to hailing it as one of the best Harvest Moon entries despite lacking the HM name. This is the first I've heard of someone really disliking it.

I think I'm just becoming a stubborn old grouch honestly. The cartoony style and the forced week-long tutorial put me off to the whole thing. I've had the game sitting unopened for a month or two as I heard it was one of the best games ever in the series. But my game time is sorely limited and I wasted an entire session trying to finish the tutorial and lost patience with the forced mini-quests to learn the game. It made me miss the simplicity of the old games.


And I'm not one to shy away from "kiddie/cartoony" imagery in games, I'm a Nintendo fan after all, but the artwork just wasn't appealing to me. The whole thing made me think of those Farmville games on Facebook.


I'm sure there is a quality product under there, but I just can't motivate myself to go back and try it again. I just tell myself I should play something else instead.

It's funny you mention the tutorial, because Story of Seasons is a massive, massive improvement in that regard from the previous game, Harvest Moon: A New Beginning. They were streamlined a lot for Story of Seasons from their endless nature in that.

By "true" third-party game, I mean not published by Nintendo in any region (Nintendo helped publish OB64 in Japan).

I'll give it another shot soon, especially with the amount of positive feedback the game has gotten. But I am finding that I don't want to spend a ton of time in tutorials and introductions. I am craving experiences where I can just dive in and start experimenting and exploring, without a huge flashy intro.
