Having actually played through all of Okami, it simply wouldn't work on the GC.

Simple, understandable reason A - The GC doesn't have enough buttons.  Yes, this could have been fixed, but using the GC triggers for paint mode would have been a pain.

More likely reason B - Space.  Okami has more music than the entire GC disk can handle.  Okami is nearly 3.5 gigs of pure game, and at least 1/3 of that is music (I've looked at the files myself).  The game has an incredible, incredible soundtrack. (5 disks long, for instance) that due to the nature of the game - they couldn't have split the game up into 2 parts to fit onto a disk.  (As the space isn't taken up by 1 time voice acting or FMV)

Yes, Okami was wondeful, who knows if it would have sold better on the cube.  If it had (somehow) came out for the cube i probably would have bought it for the cube instead (like most 3rd party offerings) but the game was essentially a PS2 game from the ground up and this is highly obvious when it comes to the controls.  I'm very dissapointed about capcom dissolving clover - but they could very well show up somewhere else...

While you guys were bitching about the game, i was playing it.

Simply one of the best action/adventure games ever made.  Best one i've played since Ocarina of Time.  Amazing game that everyone really should give a chance to play.

If it does come out for the Wii (which is 99.9% unlikely) , i will simply buy it again.  The game is so damn good that i need to convince Capcom to make another one.  Hell, if i didn't already own a PS2 because of the 50+ other wonderful games on it, this game would have convinced me to buy one.

Also - the game has too much music to fit onto a gamecube disk, yes, music.  (5 CD soundtrack, about 2 gigs of music total ingame)

I don't see why you couldn't simply pick up HL2:episode 1 without playing Half Life 2, yes you'd lose out on story, but it is it's own self contained game.

I'd imagine episode 2 would be similar.  The real reason to buy episode 2 now is because it also comes with Portal and Team Fortress 2  - both should be amazing stand-alone games in their own right.  Odds are they're going to try and sell episode 2 as a combination of all 3, then people will play episode 2 and go back to buy HL2 and HL2:Ep 1 if they haven't already got it.

Of course, if yuo haven't already got HL2 yet, you happen to be missing out on one of the better games in the past few years.

SixthAngel: Although it seems you already did the research, portal is done by the same guys who did narbucular drop.  Part of the reason it's so impressive.

I was a nintendo only guy for a while, then i realized that i was missing out on too many games.

I'm actually more of a PC gamer now.  I love my cube (over 60 games), I love my PS2 (over 40 games) and i love my computer (infinite games).

I still love nintendo the most, it's the reason i got a tattoo of a nintendo icon over anything else - but you miss out on a ton of stuff by simply standing by a single system.  I know that i'll be buying an xbox360 before the end of next year for a lot of stuff that is coming out for it, and i also know that early 2007 i'll be shoving 2 grand into another computer system.  I don't mind this at all, i do what i need to play the games that are deserving.

(Of course, i'm getting a Wii at launch)

^Trailer for "Portal", another game that Valve is giving away for free with HL2: Episode 2.
Seems like one of the more positively enjoyable games that i've seen in ages.

They're also throwing in "Team Fortress 2" (YAY!), but there is currently absolutely no known details or gameplay videos of it except for a single teaser:
http://pcmedia.ign.com/pc/image/article/718/718896/team-fortress-2-brotherhood-of-arms-20060714031845883.jpg

This is all ontop of the news that HL2, HL2: Episode 1, HL2: Episode 2 (and Portal, and Team Fortress 2, and other stuff) are all coming out to Xbox360 and PS3 before the end of the year as a single game package.  Talk about a busy and extremely impressive show from Valve.

Hey, Couchmonkey, i absolutely *LOVE* my PS2 harddrive, but for all the wrong reasons.

Likewise, I believe the only thing that makes the PS3 horrendous for being a "computer" is that the wonderful cell processer doesn't have OOO commands.  Without OOO commands it's relatively worthless in most operating system environments.

If the backwards compability thing using a PS2 chip is true - i'll most likely be shoving in a half-terabyte drive into my PS3.  My PS2's 160 gig is overfilled already...

It's not "made" by atlus, it's being published by Atlus.  Very, very large difference.

It's made by grasshopper (Killer 7, Samurai Champloo) and another team that is very important but who's name escapes me right now.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Third parties hate me.
« on: June 05, 2006, 11:03:28 PM »
More than half of my gamecube library is third parties, of course, i almost ran out of first party games to buy.  I'd say that over half of my GBA games are also third party, probably 1/3 of my DS games.   Half of my SNES games.

However, 95% of my PC games are third party (microsoft does publish games) and about 90% of my PS2 games are third party.  Combined those completely destroy my total Cube games.

As i had to try to explain in a different thread on a different forum, there are wonderful game titles everywhere - all you need to do is broaden your horizons and try to find them.  My taste in gaming appears to be more diverse than most, I rarely find "lemons" (though i do come across a few - PoP: Warrior Within) but overall my focus has actually shifted away from Nintendo and more towards PC games.

This is coming from someone who lives Nintendo so much that he actually got a nintendo icon tattooed onto his body.

Give things a try.

Actually, cause i'm bored and need to fall asleep - i'll give exact ratios!

Cube: 20/60 are first parties. (I was even a bit lenient with calling things like F-Zero GX, Cubivore and Battalion Wars first party(Cubivore, oddly enough, was created by Nintendo but published by Atlus *shrugs*)

GBA: 16/36 are first party.

DS: 8/13 are first party (I need more DS games...)

SNES:17/40 are first party (being lenient again - counted my 4 rare titles as first party)

So, only the DS has a majority of nintendo first party titles for me, even for my Nintendo systems.  (I didn't bother counting my other hardware, PC, PS2, PS1, etc.)  I can't claim that my favorite games on each systems weren't first party - but i'm sure that my top 10 per system is probably a half-half First party/third party ratio.

My amount of PS2 titles is quickly approaching my Cube title collection - i'm sure it'll beat it out before i'm done.  (Partly because a lot of my PS2 games were free - but let's not get into that)

Also, i don't hate the N64 - far from it.  I just no longer own one, or any of the games associated with it.  This is a combination of thievery and a hurricane.  However, i owned 25 games and i'm sure that the ratio was about 50/50 with that system as well.  (I think it was actually a bit heavier on third parties if i remember correctly)

14
Considering the reason I don't own an Xbox360 yet is because the backwards compatibility is crap.... and the reason I bought a PS2 was because the backwards compability was excellent...

I am very glad with this.  However, the lack of ports and memory card compability is still something that confuses me.  With the already exuberent price of the PS3, and with keeping the hardware the same - i think the extra few bucks would be very, very well used.

Of course, i'm in the minority with the fact that i'll be keeping my PS2 hooked up regardless of the backwards compatibility of the PS3, simply because I have a modded PS2 with some rather.... appetizing.... features that i won't ever want to give up.

http://www.gametab.com/news/589529/
^PS3 might be using PS2 hardware for backwards compability.

Good news: Everything that plays on the PS2 should work fine.  (Hell, i might even have a small chance of being able to use my HDloader)

Bad news: No plausible upgrading of the game to run at higher resolutions.

Still, far better option than the 360 is using.

I don't know...hmm... Actually, on a personal level, I need more non-linearity than these games offer. The problem with non-linear games that depend on ME is that I play through these games in a linear fashion. My first and second playthrough of such a game is highly similar because I won't deviate from my perceived "best path" much.

The non-linearity needs to exist in the GAME, not the player. I want the game to give me challenges and problems I would never choose to encounter on my own.

Kairon@aol.com

That sounds like a personal problem.

So you want, essentially, a game that would be like an Elder SCrolls game, but with randomized locations or something?

There is non-linearity in the game, but you can throw linearity at *anything* if you'd like.  Which it seems you do.

I know of quite a few of these, they tend to involve the words "PC" and "RPG".

Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Baldurs Gate, Gothic, Arcanum...

Yes, deep down, they may be a bunch of linear(ish) quests, but the vast, vast differences between me and my friends playthroughs of Morrowind and Oblivion is staggering.  You can go through the game 10 times and do it differently every single time.  Still finding new things.

Also: MMORPGs, (As well as other "Western" RPG's), "God-games". (Civilization, Sim(s, City, etc) and hell, even some of the larger strategic multiplayer games. (I'm talking 64 person UT2004 or Battlefield 2 maps here)

Also, you might want to look into Table-top RPGs, (Dungeons and Dragons, Vampire: The Masquerade, Call of Cthulhu, etc.) these are all exactly the sort of thing you happen to be describing - except they came out over 25 years ago and tend to work far better than any hardware could manage.

Smoke: I agree with most of that, i have only gotten about 25% through SiN 1 (i'm very glad it came with Emergence) but i do miss Blade's talking.

For me though, the lack of story really didn't bug me at all.  The outright stealing from F.E.A.R and HL:2 bugged me the most, but i think the game made up for it in it's own way.

1.  It cost me $18, compared to F.E.A.R, this game was very worth the money.
2. I'm a massive stat-whore, and SiN definately had the stat-tracking.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/Sylaran/Game%20Screens/Sin10.jpg <- my last run through of SiN stats.
3. Because of hte length, the game is very replayable.  I've already beat it twice, the auto-adjusting difficulty makes a ton of difference.  My first time through the game, for instance, i only killed 44 chaingunners, my second time through the game I fought nearly 100.  (There was barely a single "grunt" after the first major ugly ass boss) The game is also overloaded with "YOU FOUND A SECRET!" and it lets you know about them.  Some of these secrets are just hilarious:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/Sylaran/Game%20Screens/Sin05.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/Sylaran/Game%20Screens/Sin06.jpg
So are a lot of the "phone calls" (Take one of the 4 digit numbers you see on posters and enter them into one of the terminals, hilarity)

For Me, SiN Emergence was all about the small moments and the way the guns just felt incredibly right.  Overall the game was far from being something "amazing", but i felt like it wasn't trying.  It was an absolutely awesome, short diversion of an FPS, which is why i bought it.

Artimus: HL2 is down to $30 now, i'm sure you can actually get it  + extra's for cheaper right now.  I highly reccomend it, the Source engine is also remarkable in that it scales, very, very well to slower systems.

I still don't have a clue what the hell type of BBcode system this forum uses, those were all supposed to be linkable thumbnails, but regardless - 25 shots of my adventure through the game.  Minor spoilers, but the engine still holds up extremely well.  (Jaggies are mainly a byproduct of the jpeg compression - 1280x1024, all graphical settings max, 4xAA, 8xAF and HDR full)

Anyway, i guess in the minds of microsoft/sony, getting the Wii won't hurt them as much as getting a "competing" console, this is exactly what nintendo wanted.  The downside is that i'm going to be required to get a 360 or PS3 in order to play some of the games I want to play.  I wish most of them would come to PC, but i know that for platformers and action based titles and such, Mouse/keyboard isn't the best option.  (Even if the Xbox360 controller works wonderfully on PC)

ah, such is life.

Oblivion, for me, is striving for Realism.  In it's pursuit of realism, certain artistic limitations had to be adhered too.  I can actually mention many favorite characters (espicially from the Dark Brotherhood quest), but the lack of everything "dripping in style" (ala WoW) is actually something that made the game much more immersive for me.

The main limitations come from the game itself, each and every single piece of equipment or item you see in the game can be manipulated.  Any and all clothing, armor, weapons, etc. that enemies have - you can pick up and use.  While many of the enemies come from generic backgrounds - they have a far more "classical" look to them.  As i said, this actually enhanced the immersion for me.  When striving for realism, you must give realistic attributes to things, you can't go on wildly divergent style.  All of the towns, buildings, random locations and flora and fauna was absolutely amazingly well done.  The wilderness is just wonderful to walk around in.  I spent the majority of my game running around the wilderness picking flowers and such.  Yes, certain things could be improved upon - but it's like that with any game.

Yet again, the game has a legacy to keep up with.  It's the 4th game in a series that is built upon realism and enemy styles from the late 80's/early 90's.  This is the style that the game kept up with, it's the style the game does very well.  Yes, the game does approach uncanny valley at times, but with a few tweaks (mainly involving stopping that horrendous ultra-close-up zoom during talking) i've really liked it.  It may be difficult to make someone "pretty" in oblivion, but it is very much the same way in real life, these people live a hard life and really have no reason to look like beauty queens.  Yet again, it's part of the problem when Realism is the goal.

What the game "lacks" in art - it completely makes up for in Writing and quests.  The quests are the meat and bones of the game, and many of the quests are some of the best i've ever came across.  Sure they almost all rely on scripted events and specific actions, but they are all made so incredibly enjoyable.  They actually feel plausible, real quests with a real goal - even the (extremely, extremely few) "Find X amount of this, or Kill X amount of that" manage to make sense because of how the writing backs it up.  There are some sick and twisted things in oblivion if you dig enough to find them.  (Part of the reason i wonder why the hell the game got away with a "T" to begin with - although that's a different argument)

Of course, morrowind to me is an entirely different beast to me, the game world was so barren that i really could not stand the damn game.  (Not to mention that many parts of the game were horribly broken.)
