General Gaming / Marvel vs. Capcom 3
« on: April 20, 2010, 12:23:10 PM »
Surprised to see no mention of it here, but Capcom announced the third entry in the Marvel vs. Capcom franchise. Here is the Youtube video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzvE7e94Z_A

As expected, no Wii version because Capcom hates us:

Quote
The title, which will likely feature more than 30 characters to   choose from and feature 3-on-3 tag team fighting, hits the Playstation 3   and Xbox 360 in spring 2011. There currently are no plans for an   arcade, computer or Wii version of the title, Capcom tells Kotaku.
http://kotaku.com/5518024/marvel-vs-capcom-3-will-be-a-living-comic-with-a-deep-story

The only sour note (aka, trying to lessen the pain of being ignored) is that it will feature a "deep story", which for me is kind of a turn off for fighting games... I tend to like minimal story with more of a focus on other aspects.

Still, I really want this game, but really don't have the budget to go multiplatform (still haven't even saved up the money for Tatsunoko vs. Capcom)... but Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was the game which made me break down to buy a Dreamcast so I'm quite sad (although not surprised) to see Capcom overlook the Wii.

General Gaming / Developers Concern Over EU 360 Sales
« on: September 30, 2007, 12:46:34 PM »
"Amidst discussions of the rumoured price drop from Sony in the 1up studio, developers reveal that 360 software sales in Europe, outside the UK, are "tanking" to the extreme point that publishers and developers are considering to not even release games in Europe outside the UK..."
-source

I always figured that the 360 was doing pretty well in Europe as a whole... although it's hard to find confirmable sales figures for the countries outside of the UK in the region.

The source, though, is 1Up, and I'm not too well versed in their track record.

Nintendo Gaming / Third parties not allowed to use "Custom" soundtracks?
« on: August 27, 2007, 04:11:52 PM »
Okay, this was posted in relation to Godzilla: Unleashed, but seems to apply to third parties in general:

Quote

ok i got you an answer...in short no there is no custom soundtrack feature. But.....this is not for just GU....Nintendo is not allowing anyone to use this feature for the time being. I believe Excite Truck (Wii) was the one and only Wii game to have it (they made this new rule after that game released). so sorry about that

- Atari (Source)

Kind of depressing if true. I wonder why Nintendo would do this on such a, seemingly, mundane feature? It's not nearly as complicated as online, for example, and there was a launch title released in the states that featured it no less...

General Chat / Bandwidth being raped...
« on: August 23, 2007, 07:12:01 AM »
*sigh* The past few days have been exhausting, I'm afraid. It would seem that there have been malicious attempts done to take down our site; now normally I wouldn't jump to those conclusions, yet it would seem that people recently banned from our forums are touting just that which would make me suspect. The sign to me that this issue was real was Sunday night when our bandwidth jumped up to 45GB for the day, an all time high. This ended up being nothing for what was to come, though, as the site started to see traffic to the tune of 25GB an hour on Monday. I ended up strengthening the htaccess file, and was able to curb that to 1GB an hour... however, 252GB had been used that day. According to the stats, the culprit was jpegs, which accounted for 90% of the total bandwidth consumption. Going from the ratio of hits, it's quite clear they were being hotlinked, somewhere, in mass.

Tuesday was more or less fine, with bandwidth staying at 1GB an hour. Wednesday flaired up again to 15GB an hour, and I had to further restrict access through the htaccess file. I got it down to 1GB an hour again. However, that night it rose to 3GB, while this morning it's now at 4GB an hour.

Sadly, the stats for the site also appear to be down. I wondered why this was, and attempted to view the log for the latest hour... to find out that the file was 1.12GB in size, which would probably explain that.

I tried to contact support about this, but their response was a combination of contacting our own web developer (doesn't help, as that's me) or doing a Google search...

At this stage, I simply have to ask if anyone could offer any advice to try and deal with this situation? I have already deleted the larger files off the site, while narrowing down the accepted domains to just the normal site and a subdomain, yet it continues. If anyone could help me with this ordeal, I would be very grateful. Thanks for your time.

General Chat / Sales: Hi-Def DVDs > VHS
« on: August 09, 2007, 12:32:40 PM »
http://www.imdb.com/news/sb/2007-08-09/#film3

"...reports said Wednesday that during the first six months of the year, people for the first time bought more movies on hi-def DVD than they did on VHS tape."

Now my question is: where the hell do people even find VHS tapes to buy anymore?

Nintendo Gaming / Take Two (2K/Rockstar) to "focus" on DS and Wii
« on: June 19, 2007, 11:30:06 AM »
Not sure if this has been posted yet, but:

Quote

To be perfectly frank, I don’t think it takes a rocket scientist to realize what’s going on with Wii and DS. I will tell you that very quickly we turned to both 2K and to Rockstar and said guys, we need a DS strategy and a Wii strategy and we are working on it. As we get into the next quarter and into budget season for 2008, everybody in this company is completely focused on it.

- Strauss Zelnick, Chariman of the Board (Take Two)

http://seekingalpha.com/article/38017

Always good to hear; however, he does go on to say:

Quote

Having said that, development cycles are long.

So it's clear the support is a ways off, although it's great to hear that level of positive remarks from a company which has traditionally stayed away from Nintendo's offerings.

7
Let's get this kettle going:

http://ce.seekingalpha.com/article/32642

A financial analyst by the name of Roger Ehrenberg has wrote a pretty scathing report on Microsoft's progress with the Xbox, or lack there of as he puts it. The article focuses on the money side of things, with particular emphasis on the amount of money Microsoft has lost on the brand so far. To quote:

Quote

Well, after five years and over $21 billion invested all they've got to show for it is $5.4 billion of cumulative operating losses, and Xbox 360 doesn't appear to be the silver bullet to turn things around.

Overall, I thought it was a very good article, that talked about a lot of important points, some which are common fact now (like the Xbox selling better in the same time frame in Japan compared with the 360). My only problem with the article was that he started out by citing "Wikipedia.org" as one of his sources... bad idea there. So I'm interested to hear what others thought of it.

General Gaming / Microsoft and Sony's HD stance?
« on: January 23, 2007, 08:33:10 AM »
Okay, I can't seem to find anything on this issue, but can anyone confirm or deny if Microsoft or Sony are forcing developers to create games in HD for the Xbox 360 and PS3... or if they are allowing developers to decide?

If so, does anyone know the minumum resolution that each is enforcing?

Thanks in advance, and sorry for the odd question.

Nintendo Gaming / Godzilla Unleashed for Wii
« on: January 22, 2007, 07:00:50 PM »
Although Atari let slip that there was a Godzilla game in development just before the last E3, word has been null about anything since. Thankfully, confirmation from another company, Classic Media, has finally broken and the game is official. Given the occasion, it's also ceremonial that I plug ye old page for it:

http://www.tohokingdom.com/vg/godzilla_unleashed.htm

Not much is known at this time, though, (beyond the title Unleashed and that it will be shown in a playable demo next month) but anyone who enjoyed either of the previous fighting games for the character should keep their eyes open for when this game gets closer to release.

Some more good press it seems, as the Wall Street Journal, in a head to head comparison of the Wii vs. the PS3, dubbed the former "the more exciting, fun and satisfying of the two new game machines." I read most of the article at work today, but sadly the Wall Street Journal only has their articles online for subscribes, but one can see a quick summary on their site under "Personal Journal":

NWR Forums Discord / The case against Zach

The man makes topics with the intention of pointing out that nobody can make a case against him for making a case against himself because he already made that case. That and the man hates bunnies; or at least I assume he does, and that alone is reason enough to make a case against him.

General Chat / Nintendo in the classroom
« on: October 10, 2006, 02:33:36 PM »
Odd topic title I know, but this thread is basically asking for any examples of Nintendo being used or brought up in the classroom by a teacher or other faculty (something not related to actual student conversations or presentations as I'm sure that's not uncommon).

Anyway, my inspiration for this topic came from a question on my Marketing exam (college level):

Quote

Nintendo chose a ___________ approach to pricing the new Nintendo DS because they felt the market for this product is price sensitive, there are major economies of scale to be achieved, and both Sega and Microsoft would be introducing new game systems shortly?

Just can't keep Sega down...

General Chat / Format War: HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray
« on: May 22, 2006, 10:02:28 PM »
So the next format war is almost here. HD DVDs go on sale in a few hours to most stores while Blu-Ray will hit in June. My question, though, is simple: does anyone care about either of them?

Personally, no. HD might be nice for those who have the TVs to support it, but even if I did I wouldn't be shelling out the $500/$1,000 for a HD-DVD/Blu-Ray player. The draw for these formats just don't seem to be there. With DVDs, you had things like optional subtitles, language tracks, extras, menus, and more. It was light years ahead of VHS. This time, the gain seems very minimal. In fact, it's made even worse by the fact that these releases are going to retail for $30-35, giving even less incitive to upgrade. The fact that you have Paramount backing HD DVD and not Blu-Ray, and then Disney doing vice-a-versa is just setting this whole thing up for failure too. If you are going to have consumers go with a new format over the popular one of DVDs, it needs to have all of the studios on board not having them pick between one or the other.

All in all, I just see these two fighting over to be this generation's laserdiscs, a format that won't even be sold in major outlets in a few years. Really, if they wanted to give the new format a edge, they should have shoved soundtracks on them for the film that can be played when inserted in a player, or something. Something to make these formats stand out in a huge way to DVDs.

Also, who decided that the covers for each of the formats should be streamlined in such a horrible and bloated fashion?

Nintendo Gaming / Godzilla for Wii
« on: May 09, 2006, 07:45:48 AM »
First off, screw everyone who hated G: DAMM :P

Second off, this source mentions several Wii games coming up, including:

Quote

Additionally, Atari announced Godzilla and Namco announced Snoopy vs. the Red Baron for Nintendo's next console.

I'm pretty hopeful, as we got screwed with STE (although that ended up sucking, anyway), but I have no idea how credible the source is. Can anyone help?

EDIT: oops, forgot the link:

General Chat / Original Star Wars Trilogy coming to DVD!
« on: May 03, 2006, 07:44:07 PM »
http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=14373

Oh praise the lord!

In response to overwhelming demand, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release attractively priced individual two-disc releases of "Star Wars," "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi." Each release includes the 2004 digitally remastered version of the movie, as well as the original theatrical edition of the film. That means you'll be able to enjoy "Star Wars" as it first appeared in 1977, "Empire" in 1980, and "Jedi" in 1983.

I will be picking these up without a second thought, although I wish that the ESB release kept the old 1997 Special Edition version, which I thought was an improvment over the 1980 one and that it got messed up on the DVD with giving Boba Fett's voice to Temuera Morrison, who read the lines like he didn't care one bit, and the whole new "Emperor sequence". Regardless, I'm very excited about this and thought that we wouldn't see the day.

General Gaming / Paramount and Universal drop PSP support
« on: March 30, 2006, 09:10:42 AM »
http://www.imdb.com/news/sb/2006-03-30/#film1

Seems that both Paramount and Universal have dropped any continued support of the PSP due to lagging sales. The article also mentions that other studios are cutting back support (which we already knew), and that the shelf space at retailers will also be reduced... which seems like it should have happend a long time ago. Speaking from a personal stand point, the PSP movie section at my Best Buy is a large as the DS and PSP game sections combined, which was insane given how full the shelves always were with PSP movie titles that weren't moving.

With the Xbox360 already out, I was starting to wonder what might happen to StarCraft: Ghost. Nothing is certain yet, but it sounds like it will either move to next generation consoles or get the lid shut on the project.

General Chat / Dead-Eye Dick: Duck Hunt
« on: February 14, 2006, 09:27:08 AM »
Anyone catch the Duck Hunt citing in the Daily Show's coverage of Dick Cheney shooting Harry Whittington? The series of sketches related to it are really the show's finest hour, but I couldn't stop laughing at the Duck Hunt portion. For those who want to catch it, they can find it here on the Daily Show's site, with the clip in question being called "Dead-Eye Dick" (sadly, the site doesn't allow much direct linking, so one will have to click "#2 with a Bullet" and then select "Dead-Eye Dick" from the menu that comes up):

NWR Forums Discord / Five Worst Gaming Articles of 2005 ;_;
« on: December 30, 2005, 10:29:04 PM »
http://www.somethingawful.com/

Stan's review of Mario Tennis: Power Tour made Somethingawful's "Worst Gaming Articles" list. Apparantly it was cited for fanboyism, something which I never much considered appropriate for the staff of Planetgamecube as they all seem very level headed.

However, I suppose this had to be mentioned, and this looked like the best board to do it in (when considering the conversation that might follow). I can say I was very shocked when I saw the site referenced.

NWR Feedback / Forum Cleanup
« on: November 16, 2005, 06:55:21 AM »
Ok, with three new boards added to the forums (which I won't argue their usefulness) is there anyway that some of the other, less needed, boards could be done away with? Personally speaking, I think forums should try to conserve the number of boards they have if it makes sense and some of them don't feature enough activity to merit keeping them around. Of course others will disagree with that, but I'm just throwing my opinion out there.

For example, one forum that I would suggest "axing" would be the Technical Discussion, as there is very little activity going on in there and most topics that should have been placed in there often flourish in their appropriate system forum anyway.

I'd also suggest getting rid of the European Community Board, as it has been such a wasteland of inactivity, but might get some flak for that. Perhaps it could be changed to a catch all International forum to cover topics that don't deal with Nintendo games from the US or Australia? Just a thought.

General Chat / Planet Gamecube: year 2001?!?

http://web.archive.org/web/20010309075703/http://www.planetgamecube.com/

Man, I started visiting the site in 2002, but I never got to see the 2001 look. Scary, I might add. Flash intro?  Oh how times have changed.

Here is a look at the site's normal appearance from that time (I'm amazed all of these images are still uploaded to be viewed):

http://web.archive.org/web/20010515211456/http://planetgamecube.com/

The archive is pretty neat though, they even managed to capture my own painful memory of my car being broken into (the first time) on my own site ;_; ( http://web.archive.org/web/20030211235858/http://www.tohokingdom.com/ )

So, anyway, interested to hear other people's thoughts on PGC's old design, or perhaps if there are any veterans left from those days here.
