Nintendo is currently investigating the possibility of partnering with third-party studios to expand the amiibo platform to games beyond its first-party software lineup.

"We’re having those conversations and we’re still early on because amiibo isn’t even going to launch until later this month," Nintendo licensing manager Damon Baker explained.

"We’re excited to see how that pans out but there’s a ton of interest from our third-party partners and we’re looking at what makes sense in terms of business models and levels of integration. There are really creative ideas that are coming through and we are working towards some opportunities for next year."

I agree with BlackNMild.  Why is this even something that warrants its own investigation or discussion?  Nintendo is releasing a product for their videogame system so wouldn't third parties be able to make games for the same thing?  Why wouldn't they?  I would just assume one would lead to the other.

Though with Nintendo's poor track record with third parties perhaps the concept just isn't something that's on their minds.  You get money for each game released on your console!  You figure you would make that your priority but Nintendo treats that like an afterthought.

Since I'm anti-Amiibo I'm thrilled to observe Nintendo flubbing it in their typical easily-avoidable way.

I presume the holdup has something to do with licensing and the way Nintendo loans out its intellectual properties. Nintendo has loosened the grip a lot more in the last couple years (e.g. the Zelda/Yoshi themed Sonic Lost World DLC, Monster Hunter 4 Nintendo themed costumes etc.), but it still doesn't just grant access to just any company out there.

This is the type of tech that after you lay the groundwork, you start developing ideas with partners to get people on board from the start and plenty of support out the gate.

When you include everyone after the fact, as more of an afterthought instead of a potential partner (as major 3rd parties should probably be thought of as), you get gaps in support and a lull in excitement from the developers ACD the consumers as well.

I think there is a translation discrepancy. Most of the Nintendo press releases involving new concepts is phrased as "looking into", "exploring", or "researching". I suspect they already have been making the moves to see it happen and we are taking their direct, translated wording too literally.


In fact here is proof of it: Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Plus on 3DS will give you new fighter jet skins themed after each amiibo you scan into the game. So the fruits of their labor is already coming to bear, albeit in a small way.

I suppose there's the possibility of 3rd party support on 3DS, but yeah...good luck, Nintendo, with getting Amiibo 3rd party support on Wii U, a console that doesn't have any more 3rd party games. It's nice to want things.
