As you probably know, part of working together brought along the opportunity get '90s Arcade Racer on Wii U (among other places). The development is moving along well and for this update we'll share some details related to the Wii U version of the game and our plans.

Fortunately, moving the game from PC/windows environment to Wii U has been a straight forward process. The project is being built on top of Unity and the team porting Unity to Wii U have obviously been doing a great job; that alone has made our part of getting running on Wii U much easier than expected. Of course, the process hasn't been without it's fair share of challenges. Without getting into minutia that we're probably not allowed to share in great detail, some things that worked on PC couldn't be ported exactly over to Wii U without affecting performance on the Nintendo console--and probably other consoles, too.

However, we're very happy with the results. Fidelity, image quality and a smooth framerate are our priorities. Detractors note, Wii U is proving very capable of running the game at 60fps at 720p with 4xMSAA and FXAA resulting in a crystal clear image. Here are some Wii U shots:
On the programming side these past few weeks our main programmer has been busy working on the AI and creating the type of competition we've discussed in the past--focusing on a fun arcade experience. Our goal is to be able to race against 30 cars in each race. If we hit that number we'll be quite happy.

Many of you have emailed us asking for a release date, unfortunately it's hard to give you a solid date but mid 2014 is our goal for now.

Some many quarters spent on scud racer back in 97 in the arcade! Can't wait.

I wonder what Engine they are using to build it. My guess would be Unity.

I believe they did state that it is Unity. It's this gen's UE3.

More or less - if you go to the Nintendo developer page it's the only engine listed, plus you can just choose to build your game for any system at the end and it basically does (mostly) everything for you.

I saw videos of this a couple of days ago and I actually want this game now. I am still frustrated that non of the big arcade racing games from the 90's live on today. No re-releases, no VC or PSN releases, no emulators can get them right, no new entries or HD remakes, nothing worth buying since Midways Arcade Treasures 3 nearly a decade ago.

Sadly, some of them are tied to licenses. Daytona USA to NASCAR and Outrun to Ferrari. Though, I guess with 3D Outrun they found a way around it.

First question is did those licenses expire or can't Sega re-issue the old Daytona games? Second question, why can't a new Daytona game be licensed again? Its not like it would bankrupt them to get a new one out there. Maybe it would Sega is pretty fragile but racing games used to be their ace, sports games too but they gave up on that when they walked away from Dreamcast.

I think the Daytona license was absorbed by the Nascar agreement but I'm not sure.

Yup. It is hitting all the right notes. I wish the Wii U had custom soundtracks so I can play "Rolling Start" on demand as I play this game.

To be fair, all three are different kinds of racers. One's arcade and drift heavy, another is futuristic, and the last is simulation-like. Am I misunderstanding what you mean?

They're all racers though. All 3 have the capability to be good, I kinda don't want one to fall through the cracks.

Well, with the inexcusable way the developer has been updating backers on Kickstarter with very slow updates that are few and far in between, I don't think Arcade Racer is coming out too soon. That at least is safe.

Still coming out who knows when, and inevitably launching with a game breaking bug that Nicalis's attempts to fix will only make worse.
