It's also probably why their prices are evergreen full retail cost in most cases.

Level 5 births a new juggernaut as Yo-kai Watch 2 clears 1.3M units off shelves. Meanwhile, Freedom Wars, Yo-kai Watch 1, and Mario Kart 8 hang around. The 3DS sold a bunch more units and so did the Vita.

Mario Kart 8 is the top selling SKU in June 2014, selling 885k retail and digital units in its lifetime to date.

http://www.gonintendo.com/s/233335-mario-kart-8-is-top-selling-game-in-june-has-sold-more-than-885-000-units-in-the-u-s-in-first-five-weeks

The NPDs have yet to come out, but initial rumblings say that Watch_Dogs (PS3, PS4, 360, XB1, PC) takes the top spot with Mario Kart 8 in second after selling 470k in June.

EDIT: Also, Tomodachi Life sold 175k retail and digital units.

I agree, I've been thinking the same thing recently.  It's great that Mario Kart 8 has done so well and the Wii U has seen an increase in sales but there just isn't anything to keep the momentum going.  If there was another big game hitting towards the end of summer maybe they'd keep things going but I have a feeling sales are going to drop way off until the holiday season hits.

They need to do something. I do realize that the summer is a bummer for the gamer but other than Shovel Knight, which in all fairness maybe Game of the Year, there is nothing at all. I'm not even sure if there are enough indies / eshop / VC titles to hold off starvation. Fall/winter is a beast if there are no more delays but July/Aug/Sept is a straight up famine.

What can Nintendo do, though?  They can't just pull a game out of thin air.  Is there anything that's Japan-only they could localize?  That's about the only way they could fill out the lineup.

It'd be more than that, unless any of those games are somehow under 40 MB; they'd have to do at least a little work to get it running natively on Wii U. Knowing Nintendo they'd insist upon rigorous testing to make sure it works exactly right.

They do have a retail release next week for Wii U - but it's the retail version of Wii Sports Club. If it's anything like Wii Fit U, that's going to tank so hard Namco will make it F2P.

There's also the chance that maybe some of these new Wii U owners will buy some of the games already released for the console that they wouldn't have yet thereby keeping them satisfied until the fall time.
