Reader Reviews / Action Replay DS "non game" review
« on: November 23, 2006, 01:15:07 AM »
Action Replay is a name thats been around for years, and dantel have done it again releasing a great device preloaded with cheats and ability to download more? or is it
Sadly not

As soon as you install the driver, you will need to download up to 1.2, you then update your AR card's firmware
After this is all completed, you will then get a display of games... well sometimes, often it decides to show no codes
So after you have dumped the codes from there servers using there utility, you get to try it out
So you pop in your fav game, be it mario kart ds or castlevania
wait a sec why does it say unknown game? even if you choose the right region as displayed on the box and game cart
After testing just 3 games, i found it doesnt pick up "mario Kart DS PAL" or"new super mario brothers PAL"

So I dumped the Jpn and USA version over the PAL version, still doesnt work

Interface:
has a bunch of cute looking circles on screen, which can be choosen by your stylus or just dpading around them
you can choose to search for pc or go back to normal screen. If you are lucky enough to find a game it SUPPORTS
it will then bring up a greenbox that allows you to pick alot of cool codes.

Not supporting games released 6 plus months, is proberly the biggest dissapointment i could ever have
support for games is clearly not there even when listed

3/10

pro:
cheap
few "supported" games which it really does "support"

con:
Not picking up games
bulky
updating DS can take 5mins for 20games

General Gaming / ps2 & psp 30+game genesis packs

Sega today announced that Sega Genesis Collection, a compilation of more than 30 Genesis titles, is being released this fall for the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable. Sega did not differentiate between the two versions but did confirm that the PSP version would take advantage of the handheld's capabilities.
A full list of the games in the compilation hasn't yet been released, but Sega did reveal that Golden Axe, Sonic the Hedgehog, Shinobi III, Altered Beast, and a Phantasy Star game (likely Phantasy Star II) would be included. The collection will also feature unlockables, such as interviews with the developers of the original titles, game hints, and some Sega arcade games from the late 1980s and early 1990s

General Gaming / ps3 and 360 graphics cards
« on: March 09, 2006, 06:23:48 PM »
I remember just 12months ago the talk of how the video cards in both are worth 1,000, since then we have seen 2 major upgrades in cards
ati: high end 1800, 1900
nvidia: 7800, 7900 (in a month)
Am I the only one thinking they will be left behind in 6months?
There were serious talk of the death of "pc gaming", yet 360 already is looking worse off
Check out tomb raider for 360 :X

kinda a rant, but has a point

Reader Reviews / Nintendogs
« on: September 29, 2005, 06:14:32 PM »
Plot summary:
Your a person who just got laid off from work, due to a legal agreement, you still get paid well but not enought that it boosts you bank balance, your bored as hell, so you decide to get a dog...you have 1,000 dollars to spend due to the settlement

Graphics:
From the first time you play this game, you will be amazed by the graphics, the dogs are amazingly detailed and very pretty looking, sadly the same thing isnt true for the house you live in, Bunch of sprites thrown together, which often shows blacklines
Same could be said for the floor of the game, It looks like a 100meg video compressed into a 3meg file at times.

Woof factor:
The game is all about getting to train your puppy, there are basicly 3 different ways of doing this
* Speed and strength - Walking you dog alot, training it to chase items at the park
* obedience - Training you dog to do what you say, rewarding it for chasing a ball with a treat or pat, this leads it to become your puppy slave
* Call center lady - Training you dog tricks and giving them voice commands, the dog will learn these commands and give you weird looks when you dont pronounce them in the right way

The main aim of the game is to Pat, teach voice commands and walk it minaly
Patting your dog is a great expience, your dog will shine when it hits its puppy orgasm of happyness, With a sprite bone popping up sometimes, which you can feed your puppy
the problem with patting you dog is that they mapped the dog's feel structure weirdly, you can pat the dogs side from the front and the dog will count it as a under the head rub.
The teaching aspect is well done, The game explains how to pull of the tricks using the stylus, after you pull of the trick, a light blub will pop up, giving you about 10secs to say the command, thankfully the mic's low quality is a blessing because if you have a sore throat or mess up the way you pronounce the word, it will come out the same due to the low sample rate of the audio.
Walking the dog was added for you puppy to meet other dogs but sadly the people you meet always give you the same boring advice and there dogs are a pain due to the fact they give your dog flea's, The walking quickly become a quest to collect all the items, due to the fact you only collect about 4items a harf hour makes it fun and something to becomes obbsessive

competition:
To win money, after you train your puppy there are 3 competitions to enter
*Disc - throw a disk and watch you dog catch it, its the same mini game for the different ranks, only thing that changes is the score of the other dogs, which you sadly never see.
*obedience course- bunch of hurdles and a few pipes and see-saws, set up seems a bit random and again you never see the other dogs
*simon says- baised around giving you dog commands and showing of advanced commands like backflips

Audio:
The audio in this game is very simple, It does the job well
The minus of audio is that it will get a bit boring, hearing just barks and cars and planes could of been pulled off better
but you may ask "but I saw a record player pic on pgc and other sites" I was excited too, but no these musicial items are useless, many needing stylus whinding or have bad/quite audio

Gameplay:
This game will keep you busy for a week or 2 at the most, very addictive at the start
much like animal crossing will keep you busy and is fun to play on a rainy day, but without having to pull grass

8.5/10

General Chat / Avcom round up
« on: July 17, 2005, 05:29:56 AM »
Avcom is the Adelaide Anime and Video game convention
This year was huge in numbers, the video game room was the place to be with melee and naruto machines drawing crowds.
Here is a low down on the Melee, naruto and bomberman ds touraments

Saturday
Midday saturday launched the Melee tournament, strictly 32 people... well so much for that, 80 people ended up registering
With 5-10 ppl being dq because they didnt show up when there name was called
The 2 last people to live in stock 3 matches/random stages won and went on to semi's were it changed to 5min matches.
The prizes:
1st. starfox assault + nintendogs - chihauhau & friends promo top + ds keyring (from NAL)
2nd. starfox assault + ds keyring (from NAL)
Sadly I came tied 3rd
winner: kiesser.... 1st. Marth   2. Luigi (very good luigi player)

Next up after the monster 80man melee was 2 player naruto 3 tournament at 3pm, featuring about 60 players
The first match played featured the person who won, who nearly lost the first game.
The prizes:
1st: $60 of naruto merch, 2nd: $40 of naruto merch
The winner works at the place were the merch is from, shin tokyo....so yeah lol
He played as Itachi, 2nd place was rock lee
I personally made it to the 2nd round.

Around 30mins later the 4 player naruto tournament, featuring around 50 players
With only the winner going thu to the next round.
The problem was that some people walked off and they pressed start on the none controlled person, and the person won due to having the most heath due to time limit's
they soon fixed it and made them 3 player matches.
I didnt witness the final match due to being knocked out in first round and not being very interested.
The prizes:
1st: $60 of naruto merch, 2nd: $40 of naruto merch

Sunday:

Sadly due to falling back alseep I missed the ulitmate gamer tourament, I know it included mario kartD, gran trismo and point black...beyond that I do not know
prize: DS launch promo top, ds keyring, zelda: minish cap + stuff from sony & microsoft

1:30 Started the Sign up of Bomberman DS, up until this time I didnt see any DS's or PSP's
I meet a gamer when signing up and challenged me to Metroid, he kicked my ass.
Around 2 O'clock alot of DS owners had gathered, around 15 at that time, I was well impressed by the numbers.
The Man explained How bomberman worked and we started downloading, the trouble was It toke around 5min for 6 of 8 to download it, 2 people didnt show up on the hosts DS.
He restarted the download and we all got in, in about 3mins.
Around this time another 10 or so gamers popped up with there DS.
The game was single round, with only the winner going on.
In all about 4 games happened, being about 30 people entered

pic1
pic2

Prize:
1st: Another code (from NAL)

After this ended alot of people stayed and played DS against each other, I personly got to play band brothers in 4 player (have demo on standby atm thanks to "god brain") and a little bit of pictochat.

Good event, more info check Avcom.org.au
