Nintendo Gaming / RE:Report your "Nintendo Virus" sightings
« on: August 28, 2006, 05:43:37 AM »
Yesterday, on my way home from work, I stopped off at an internet cafe because I was desperately thirsty. While I was having a beer, I noticed a guy about 18 years old looking at GameSpot videos of Wii games. I went over to him and we had a reeeeeeaaaaaaaly long discussion about the Wii games, in particular Red Steel. After a while, a man in his early 30s came over, wondering what we were doing. My and this boy explained to him about the Wii and his capabilities. He sounded excited about it, especially after hearing he could play his old favorites on the Virtual Console, as he was apparently a hardcore SNES gamer.

Sure, I want to see loads of awesome things at these conferences and hope for the best. But I don't hype myself up, like some forumers, to the point where that if I don't get what I expect, I have a huge rant complaining about it. It's all about keeping in proportion.

Remember not to get your hopes up, as this may be (and will very likely be) a load of game announcements, videos and demonstrations, so don't be dissapointed if it is and start whining. It's actually a good thing, you know, to hear of all these games and their capabilities. The launch date and price will come eventually, so all we can do is be patient.

What the hell is everybody whinging about? At E3, Nintendo specifically stated the Wii is to be released in the last quarter of 2006. That means October, November or December. Is it really the end of the world that you don't know the exact hour on the exact day? It's not like we have to wait for long - I've never seen this many people who are so impatient that they can't wait a month. A MONTH! The Leipzig conference has shown some good things, like the announcements of some sweet games and their online modes. You can't expect everything, so grow a bit patience and WAIT for a couple of weeks!

Right now the REALLY important Nintendo developers are working on sequels so there is a perceived lack of newness because where it counts we're just getting sequels.  The B titles are new but the A titles are sequels.

I think the non-game factor plays a part too.  There are new IPs for the DS for example but I don't care because they're all non-game stuff I'm not interested in like Brain Training, Nintendogs, and Electroplankton.  WiiSports is a new game but the more I find out about it the less interested I am in it because it just sounds like a glorified tech demo with no depth, dumbed down for non-gamers.  The game might as well not exist if I'm not interested in it.  I want Nintendo's elite developers making awesome brand new stuff targetted at existing gamers and they're not so the Wii lineup looks more cookie-cutter than it actually is.

As much as it may pain you to hear this, developers does not make games with only you, one person, in mind. So believe me when I say that these new developers don't really care what you think, Ian. It's extremely selfish and arrogant to think that games aren't worth existing just because you don't like them. The aim is the Wii is to make everybody want to play it, including non-gamers, and if that's too much of a problem for you, go buy a PS3 and stop moaning.

Nintendo Gaming / Wario Ware: Smooth Moves
« on: August 21, 2006, 10:36:53 PM »

ONM: How many new games can we expect in Wario Ware Smooth Moves for the Wii?
GA: We're thinking around the 200 figure, which is similiar to other games in the series.

ONM: You have to make yourself look silly to play this game. Do you think people will be embarassed to play it?
GA: Yes, you do look silly playing it. One of the main goals was to make people do silly moves and entertain the people around them.

ONM: How long has the game been in development?
GA: A little over 6 months, and Nintendo has announced it will be released within 90 days of the Wii hardware launching.

ONM: Will Smooth Moves use the Wii Remote's speaker function?
GA: Yes, it will. We have a game where you bounce a ball on a tennis racket. As well as the vibration we will also have the sound of the ball. We are also planning on a game where the Wii Remote makes a sound and the player has to react to it.

ONM: Have you got any other ideas for Wii games other than Smooth Moves?
GA: Presently I would like to implement all my ideas into Wario Ware. However, there are ideas that wouldn't really work in the game so I will have to include them in my next project. Unfortunately, that will have to remain a secret for now!

Extract from interview of Goro Abe, director of Wario Ware: Smooth Moves, in the August issue of Official Nintendo Magazine.

Personally, I think this game has the cleverest and most in-depth use of the motion technology so far. Those of you who have seen the trailers and videos will have seen the likes of running, hula hoop, squat thrusts, balancing a broom, fencing, shredding paper and so on. The mini-games are incredibly simple, but the motion tech has been implemented very effectively and Smooth Moves looks like a really fun (and funny) game to play.

I doubt Nintendo would bother to make two seperate control systems. People know the Wiimote-Nunchuk would feel weird when you first start playing with it, but that won't get any easier by ignoring it. Hopefully, they will try out the new controller and realize it only takes a few minutes to get used to.

Sorry if I'm the only one who doesn't see the enjoyment factor of a table tennis game. The only reason it's selling like this is because it's made by Rockstar.

Silence! I know what I meant.

Kairon: if A-attacks are meant to happen quickly, then you could move the Wiimote quickly. Smashes would be like a baseball hit.

After the recent uproar of joy from fans of Super Paper Mario, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw ...
Paper Mario Wii

DK always has some sort of strange game, so I guess I'll put down ...
Donkey Kong Adventure Wii

Seeing as Nintendo have started to give all the Mario characters leading roles in games, you never know when you might see ...

Waluigi Land
Toad Adventures
Koopa's Revenge?

Nintendo will shock us all.

For some reason, I just though of Diddy Kong swinging around throwing bananas and slapping faces.

On the control system: there are only a few elements of the game that could be implemented with motion sensoring. I'm talking about waving upwards for jumps, and left or right for a shortcut to A attacks. Many other parts of SSBB would be too complicated to use motion control.

Wasn't it something to do with Olimar being the size of a penny? Not that it matters anyway. Nintendo resized in SSB, they did it in SSBM and I guarantee there will be more resizing in SSBB.

Namco will probably throw in a beat 'em up, possibly Soul Calibur 4.
Fight Night might return, and you could use the nunchuk and remote as fists.
Whoever does it, there will be another FPS, seeing how the genre is growing to be one of the most popular.
Ubisoft will do anything you tell them to, so having them on board helps.
Harvest Moon is almost a guarantee, as it always appears about three times on a Nintendo system.

Also, it decreases the chances of clones. I don't want to have any clones this time ... SSBM had far too many.

Mario -> Doctor Mario -> Luigi
Captain Falcon -> Gannondorf
Pikachu -> Pichu
Marth -> Roy
Fox McCloud -> Falco Lombardi
Link -> Young Link

Hopefully, some of them are to be dropped, and others revamped seriously.

My take:
Doc Mario should be cut, and Mario and Luigi should have seperate moves influence by their GC games (e.g. FLUDD and Poltergust 3000). Captain Falcon might stay, but this means Gannondorf needs some serious work - he's had loads of unique stuff since the days of Ocarina of Time (e.g. double sword combo, ball of black magic, morph into Ganon). Older Pokemon could possibly be cut out in favour of newer ones but not really sure. As for the Fire Emblem duo, Roy will probably go for his over-power, and Marth will need a brand new moveset. In terms of the Star Fox pair, Falco is pointless and can be dropped, while Fox can just get an update. Finally, Link should be Twilight Princess style and Young Link should be Wind Waker style - movesets can be the different items from the two ages in Ocarina.

IMO, I would rather not have slots taken up by loads of characters from the same game series who are quite similiar to other potential characters.

Instead, I want Nintendo to take advantage of their massive library. That way, there is more variety, plus it increases chances of unique movesets.

1266
I hadn't thought of Star Fox multiplayer, but now that you bring it up, I agree that some large Deathmatches would be awesometastic.

I reckon us forumers could think up a massive list of potential online games. Mario Kart Wii and Animal Crossing Wii are likely. FPS game are often popular online, as are RPGs, so if Nintendo supply them, hours of fun will follow.

Requiem: Does Camelot have an official company website? If so, I would want to search around on that for information.

Stimutacs Addict: This wrestling game you are on about - do you mean like a WWE game? Or something completely new and bizaare? I would prefer the latter.

Then again, Mewtwo didn't walk on the ground in SSBM.

Although, I don't particulary feel an urge for Ridley. However ... CAPP'N OLIMAR FOR THE WIN!

I have a feeling that at TGS, Camelot is going to make every gamer crap their proverbial pants....and then their real pants.

The only word I have heard on it was that it would be in the Golden Sun series - and that might just be a rumour.

On the topic of 'little info', I am also looking out for news on the so-called Battalion Wars 2 that IGN talked about earlier. I hope both of these come to life eventually, as the Wii shall want all the genres it can take, so an RPG and a Strategy is a good plan.

Wave Race is indeed possible. The controller could be used like the handlebars of a jet-ski.

Star Wars has many elements that could be used well by the controller i.e. lightsaber battle, shooting, starship flying.

Metroid Prime 4 might happen, but will need some good thinking to add some more clever and original stuff to it.

Not sure about the others.

Right now, a lot of focus is on the launch in the Fall, and to be honest, I don't blame them. But has anyone stopped to think about the Wii in the long run? If not, this should be the place to discuss it.

Obviously, the most important thing to consider is games. Of course, there shall be all sorts arriving over the years to come, but I was wondering: what should be included in that 'all sorts'? Personally, I would imagine we will see these at some point:

Mario Kart Wii
Star Fox Wii
Pikmin 3
Animal Crossing 3
Mario Party 8
A Mario Sports game (or two)
TimeSplitters 4
Atlus sims (and not just sequels to DS versions, but actually ideas exclusive for Wii)
Resident Evil 5?

It is proven that all of these are killer apps already on current systems, so a return is inevitable, not to mention the fact that the new control system could innovate massively. As for brand new and unique ideas, I bet a few are bound to show up, but I have no idea what they could be - after all, Nintendo are full of surprises.

Feel free to post your own thoughts on what you think is to come with the Wii.

More ideas

Chibi Robo
This little guy has a lot of capabilities, which could be changed into attacks. Attack with his plug could be the standard A hit. For B moves, it could have the Chibi-Copter as a save-the-life move as well as hitting others with the blades. The Chibi-Blaster could be used in the sort of way Samus used his Charge Beam. The Squirter could hit and push opponents away. And for a little finishing touch, if Brawl will keep the pose move when you press up on the D-Pad, Chibi could do his Drake Redcrest pose.

Pikmin arena
A lot of posters have suggested Captain Olimar. I agree with that idea, but what about a Pikmin map? All the crates/barrels would be replaced by Pikmin pallets, the spaceship and the onions randomly flying above, and maybe even have the arena change, like the SSBM Pokemon Stadium. One moment, you're fighting in the Impact Site, with clams biting onto your feet to slow you down, when suddenly it changes to Forest Naval, with jets of steam shooting you up.

My suggestions:

CHARACTERS

Bowser Junior
I reckon Bowser Junior could work quite well. Maybe toned down power-wise compared with Bowser, but more agile. I was thinking of one of his moves being a transformation to Shadow Mario from Super Mario Sunshine, like the Zelda to Shiek move in SSBM. Shadow Mario could have a goo attack, a staff attack and maybe even a paint warphole for a save-your-life move.

STAGES

Mario Sunshine Worlds
Just imagine how well some of the Sunshine areas could turn out. Possibly at Ricco Harbour, there could be moving platforms from the cranes, and Bloopers in the background that occasionally fire slime onto the arena. Or what about Gelato Beach, with sand dunes popping up and Quack Attacks running in to cause havoc every so often.

Then again, these ideas are mainly because I broke out Super Mario Sunshine for the first time in ages, and I had SSBB on my mind at the same time.
