I can't support anything less than a 10.

I'm willing to give Miyamoto the benefit of the doubt here, considering that the games Next Level makes with Nintendo are all awesome, and the games Next Level doesn't make with Nintendo all suck.

Fluidity: Spin Cycle was pretty awesome too, although it seems like no one played it.  Technically that was the end of 2012 but it was the very end so... it almost counts.

I wouldn't call NightSky anemic, I loved it.  Actually Nicalis rubs me in a good wa... wait, that kind of sounds dirty. But they're basically a publisher who exists to bring indie games to Nintendo platforms.  Who else is doing this!?

Brief but deplorable representation of female figures.  Can you clarify this?  I'm getting a bit tired of this kind of thing and it's a huge turn-off for me nowadays.

I think I did so in a major way when I bought my PS2, which was my first non-Nintendo system ever.  I started buying stuff that was different than much of anything I had ever really bought before, like Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill games.  It was worth expanding my tastes a bit.

I do think that I can go overboard sometimes though.  There was a period a few years back when I was trying to play most of the "big" games in the industry just to get outside of my comfort zone a bit and try to understand / appreciate what many others were, and frankly, a lot of them just weren't doing much for me.  So I went back to being a lot more selective there.  Then again, trying to play most of the "big" games is probably not expanding your tastes as much as it is contracting them, nowadays.

If any of you guys are interested, I wrote a top 10 wishlist for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 / X over on Negative World:

http://www.negativeworld.org/topten/9332/top-10-improvements-that-i-would-like-to-see-in-xenoblade-chronicles-2-aka-x

It really just focuses on things that were already in Xenoblade and can be improved.  I wasn't throwing totally new stuff in there.

General Gaming / Re: 2012 Game Of The Year Chat
« on: December 29, 2012, 05:48:56 PM »
10. Mutant Mudds (3DS eShop) - I know this game is a bit divisive around here, but for me it was a solid 2D platformer that felt like a modern take on SNES style gaming. Didn’t like the time limit on stages, liked everything else.

9. New Super Mario Bros. U (Wii U) - Honestly this wouldn’t even be in my top 10 if it were just the main game, which is good but kind of same ol' same ol'. Challenge mode though... now we’re talking. This is exactly what I need from a Mario game, straight up challenging platforming with controls tight enough to make it feel right. They better include this in all future versions!

8. Journey (PSN)- This game didn’t quite blow me away the way it did some people, but it was a pretty wonderful, sublime experience nonetheless. And very beautiful... very, very beautiful. Also, short enough that I may have to take another run through it.

7. Resident Evil: Revelations (3DS) - Revelations feels like a game with a bit of an identity crisis, as most modern Resident Evil games do. I loved the Jill stuff, which felt like a good combo of the gameplay of Resident Evil 4 + the mood of Resident Evil Remake. The other parts were not as good. Overall... still pretty good.

6. Rhythm Heaven Fever (Wii) - Simple, wacky, fun, addicting. This is the direction I love seeing the rhythm genre head into. There was just enough challenge in obtaining all medals to keep me coming back for more (although in no way, shape, or form will I ever go for all perfects.) It doesn’t hurt that my girlfriend loves the game too.

5. Kid Icarus: Uprising (3DS) - My expectations for this game were pretty low, and it kind of blew them away. The moment to moment action in this game is amazing, as is the variety and sheer polish. It also had some of the best dialogue in any Nintendo game yet. I did have some control issues, but nothing that kept me from loving it.

4. Paper Mario: Sticker Star (3DS) - Now this is an odd one. It’s less of an RPG than older Paper Mario games, and more of a platformer. But not quite Super Paper Mario either. Really, Sticker Star is its own beast. And although I still don’t fully understand why they took XP out, I loved pretty much everything else about this game. It felt like the dev team was having a lot of fun with their ideas.

3. Little Inferno (Wii U eShop) - Best fireplace simulator ever. No really, this is what I think of when I think “experience”. It’s not the core gameplay that won me over (though it is rather fun to burn things), but the underlying narrative and revelations that happen throughout. Not many games really connect to me on a personal level, but this one did.

2. Monster World IV (VC) - Yes, I’m putting an old Genesis game way up near the top of my list, and I'm allowed to, because it finally released in NA this year. What can I say? It’s a great platformer, but it also has adventure / exploration elements, which basically means it hits all of my sweet spots. Tons of creativity too. I really feel like this is a lost classic from the 16-bit era (IE the best era ever), and it saddens me that more people have not played it.

1. Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii) - The number one game on my list is also the only one that I have not finished. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not one of those people who love it but grew bored of it halfway through. I’m still very engaged. The problem is, the world is so vast and amazing and pulls me in so deeply that I feel like it’s doing the game a discredit to sit down and play for anything less than 3-4 hours at a time... and I rarely have that much time to play a game nowadays. So I’m about halfway through, slowly moving forward. This RPG is so modern in so many important ways, and not “modern” in the non-linear, cutscene fest way that many others are, but modern in the “not going to penalize you in stupid ways but instead will make (almost) everything as slick as possible” way in a lot of key mechanics. It’s a big, amazing world where every piece of it feels unique and “real” and you can spend hours exploring it without moving the plot forward... or you can go right to the plot, which is intriguing enough to keep you interested. Your choice. I tend to take my time...

Almost made it: Crashmo, La-Mulana, New Super Mario Bros. 2, Nano Assault Neo, NightSky, Nintendo Land, Trine 2

Too soon to call: Fluidity: Spin Cycle

Wanted to play but didn’t (yet): Assassin’s Creed III, Closure, Darksiders II, Liberation Maiden, NiGHTS into Dreams, Persona 4 Arena, Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, Retro/Grade, Scribblenauts Unlimited, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2, Sine Mora, Sound Shapes, Theatrhythm Final Fantasy, The Last Story, The Unfinished Swan, The Walking Dead, Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward, ZombiU

12
I'm sure NSMB U does have a bunch of new enemies, but they don't seem as... iconic?  The only one I can think of off of the top of my head is the squirrel.

13
I'm not sure if we will ever again see a big new franchise from Nintendo at the level of Mario / Zelda / etc.  I think the reason for this is a bit simpler than it might seem: Nintendo's biggest / best teams are ALWAYS working on those franchises, they have no time for anything else.

On the other hand, through 2nd parties and acquisitions... maybe?  Xenoblade is huge and amazing and technically a Nintendo game.

For smaller stuff, certainly.  I love Pikmin, it's one of my favorite franchises.  Pushmo is one of the best digital games I've played.  Etc.

14

And here it is.  The short answer is: It's a great game with some flaws that hold it back a bit.

Thanks!

About a month ago I actually committed myself to writing 1 review a week until the end of the year, so... plenty more will be on the way.  This review is the 4th since the start of this weekly thing, the other three being:

Denpa Men http://www.negativeworld.org/article.php?id=8798
Monster World IV http://www.negativeworld.org/article.php?id=8839
Starship Defense http://www.negativeworld.org/article.php?id=8860

As you can see I like to focus on the games that not everyone else and their brother are reviewing.  Stuff that deserves more attention than it is getting.

Hey guys, I've been playing the heck out of Little Inferno and I just finished up my review for it.  The final word is: there is no final word.  I suspect this game is going to get a lot of very, very different reviews.  We'll see.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Top 10 Implementations of Trains in a Nintendo Game

I love the obscurity/niche quality to the topic of the article. Reminds me of Matty Casamassina's old IGN artilce on best flashlight controls in games, back in the day.

Hey thanks!  I definitely try to shoot for the niche sometimes, write that thing that no one else is writing.  I feel like writing about video games should be more "fun" than it often is... well, and reading about video games, of course.

I'll try not to spam you guys with everything I write, but this one is a bit off-beat and bizarre and will probably be interesting to some, especially old school Nintendo fans.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 312: Hail to the High Schooler
« on: November 07, 2012, 06:13:14 PM »
So, about Dark Souls... I haven't played it, but I have played Demon's Souls, and I feel like my experience was very similar.  It's a fun game moment to moment, but the overall unforgiving nature of it led me to ultimately stopping.  Still, I have always felt a sort of "guilt" much like Jon? felt where all of these other people were enjoying and finishing the game and I felt like maybe I was just approaching it wrong, etc.

However, I do kind of rebel against the idea that has been thrown at me a few times that I'm weak or something because it apparently was just "too hard" for me.  I don't think the difficulty level is my issue with Demon's Souls, and in fact I tend to like difficult games.  My issue is that you can spend a good 30-60+ minutes doing something, die, and actually be in a worse spot than when you started, and that is just frustrating and a bit of a turn-off.  At that point, is it really skill if you keep coming back for more?  Or just persistence?  Especially frustrating is when you spend all of that time and then die because of some weird trap or this or that, which can be avoided, sure, but can still feel cheap.  I don't even have much time to game nowadays, and after a couple of 1-2 hour sessions that ended with me in a worse spot than I started, I just couldn't find the will to go on.

I still get tempted to finish it sometime (I only finished 5 or 6 stages) but I kind of doubt that will happen.  The weird thing is, when Dark Souls was announced, I just kind of assumed they would tone down the unforgiving nature because that is what usually happens in the case of a "niche" game finding a bit of popularity and getting a sequel.  The developers usually try to shoot for that mass market that they just missed.  So I thought hey, maybe I'll just wait for that one and pick it up and it will be more what I am looking for.  But from everything I've heard, Dark Souls is just as bad, if not worse.

No one will believe you though, so I guess the only way to prove it is to have me be a guest on the podcast.  And then I can do my Ray Romano impression, which mostly consists of me saying things like "hey uh... it's Ray Romano, saying things that uh... Ray Romano would say..." because I have no idea what he actually says.

Making music.  Although it is kind of video game related, since the stuff I have been working on lately is video game music:

And I do web programming... also video game related.  I don't seem to do much that isn't related to video games.  I guess "read".

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Blast Corps 3DS - A Day Dreaming Post - Seconded?
« on: November 07, 2012, 02:12:29 AM »
I actually bought the original just a couple of years ago.  I had remembered playing it a bit way back in the days and decided to finally, 10+ years later, get my own copy.  It's a really fun game and I think it is still very playable.  They just don't make games like this (on a conceptual level) anymore.

I'm not really sure if these are obscure, but on DSiWare I feel like X-Scape doesn't get enough love, and Pop Island - Paperfield is a great multiplayer game for, I believe it was $2?

Guys, I (for the most part) finished the entire game and it took me over 45 hours.  It's insane.  When you think you are getting near the end, you're not even close.  I still can't really say if I really liked it or not, as it combines some really cool stuff with some insane grinding like I have never seen before (and I've played a lot of RPGs, albeit I try to stay away from stuff I hear has a ton of grinding.)  Man.  I've heard the sequel is better, although I haven't heard details, so I am hoping that better means less grinding.

I wrote a review, if anyone is interested: http://www.negativeworld.org/review/8798/the-denpa-men-they-came-by-wave-nintendo-3ds-eshop-review

PS. I have no idea why it is adding this ->
