Title: These `takeover' adds **** up mozilla
Post by: mac<censored> on March 16, 2003, 01:27:04 PM
When I try to visit www.planetgamecube.com, my browser starts constantly switching between that page and some `takeover' page, never actually showing any content, and as far as I can tell, it's in an infinite loop.  I don't have cookies blocked, BTW.

Since I don't have windows or a mac, that means I basically can't use PGC at all now (I had a direct bookmark to the forums page, so at least I can post this).

BTW, this is mozilla 1.0.0, I don't know if other versions have the same problem (though I don't really know if it's a bug in mozilla or whether whatever the ad's doing is some dodgy IE-specific hack).

I am using Phoenix (a stripped down version of Mozilla), and I don't see the full screen ads either, but I do get a pause of about a 1/4 of a second before you go on to the next page.  No infinite loop for me.

As I've told you SEVERAL times now, the takeover ad works just fine in Mozilla.  I tested it myself.  You have a setting in yours that you've changed that's causing the problem.

works like a dream for me in galeon (which is mozilla-based.) if you're running *nix check that out.

Maybe you told someone; not me.

Did you test in windows?  Linux?  Which version (of mozilla)?

Perhaps they worked fine in whatever configuration you tested, but apparently the method the ads are using is fragile enough that they don't work everywhere.

I'm running mozilla 1.0.0 under Debian (using the standard package), BTW.  PGC is actually the only site that's ever failed to display like this for me...

I tried it with all profile info removed (I deleted the entire .mozilla directory), and the problem persists; whad'ya want me to say?

It's bad enough to have intrusive ads, but when the ads cause the entire site to fail, it's a whole 'nother level of annoying...

I've tested it with Mozilla 1.0 on Mandrake 8.0.  However, considering Mozilla 1.0 is already several released versions old, I'd suggest updating to at least 1.3.

As the other users here will attest to, it's NOT a Mozilla problem.  However, since we do have at least a handful of people are having problems, I've disabled them on PGC until we can get updated code.

Mozilla rocks with the take over ad, because it seems to just skip over the ad, it flashes up, then moves on.  With IE, you have to load the whole thing.

I am having this same EXACT problem with Safari on the Mac. It keeps refreshing back and forth from the full page black ad back to the forum. I did also test this on Mozilla 1.3a (Mac OS X) and it works fine.

This is obvious a real problem that does exist on some browsers and not worth getting snotty about. Please fix. I really don't care to load-up Mozilla just to come to this site, not worth my trouble.

Ditto for me with the infinite loop with Safari for Mac. Safari is still in beta stage and I expect a bug or two until the final one comes out this fall, but if there are other browsers  having this same problem...

Well we can't help it if you're using a beta browser.  I would either upgrade to a newer mozilla or IE browser.

i just tested the forums in IE 5.2.2, Mozilla 1.2.1, and the Safari beta on an iBook running Jaguar 10.2.4. It did get stuck on the ads, i was able to stop it, refresh the page, and access the forum. But after i clicked on this thread to post a reply, it went back into the loop. The other two browsers worked flawlessly; i'm using Mozilla to post this message.

My PC is running XP Pro (can't access version number at the moment), and i browse using Mozilla 1.3. No problems; in fact the ad page comes up but the ad itself doesn't display. i've also browsed the site on SuSE Linux using Mozilla without problems.

The problem seems to be isolated to Safari, which is still in beta. i don't understand why Mozilla under Linux has issues, given that it's using the same rendering engine as the other versions. Try upgrading to the latest official release (not betas or nightly builds).

Also, given that Safari is based on the KDE browser Konqueror, could someone running KDE let us know if it loads? Konqueror's always been behind Netscape/Mozilla/IE, and they acknowledge it on their site:

We estimate that 90% of the web\'s script work with Konqueror. A few bindings to connect ECMAscript and HTML are still missing to make the rest work, too.

I wonder if it has something to do with the connection speed -- I'm using a 56K connection so the main page is only partially downloaded/displayed by the time the `takeover' happens, and similarly, the `takeover' page really hasn't been displayed at all when it suddenly reverts to the main page again (from there, it just loops forever).

BTW, I made a post recently to this thread which showed up for a while, but now seems to have been deleted.  Are you guys going through and deleting posts?!?  Apologies if not, but if so, man that's really obnoxious (shades of big brother...).

Check your display options in your customization.  I still see your previous post.
