2019 Gaming for NWR
« on: January 07, 2020, 12:29:52 PM »
While there are a lot of sites, (such as our own,) talking about the games of 2019 and what was the best or just a review of the year in general, chances are that the NWR Forum users were playing a lot of other games dating further back than just 2019. So, here's a chance to see what everyone did take the time to play and any additional comments one may want to make about those games or get thoughts from others on.

I also kept a list of all the games I managed to finish for the first time in 2019.

Heavy Rain
Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater
Radiant Historia Perfect Chronology
Bad North
Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadow of Valentia
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Fire Emblem Warriors
Persona 5
Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna the Golden Country
Rhythm Heaven Megamix
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
Code Name S.T.E.A.M
Octopath Traveller
Pokémon Colosseum
Death Road to Canada
Kirby Superstar
Red Dead Redemption
Final Fantasy 7
Untitled Goose Game

Pretty decent list, some games I've been wanting to play for a while. Persona 5 was a monolith, took me 170 hours to reach the credits, it's way too long in my opinion.

Codename Steam is the game I'm most glad I played. It's right up my alley but I've ignored it until now. It certainly has some aspects of it's design that are really annoying, it's probably the game on the list that made me swear and shout the most. Wouldn't say it's underrated or overrated, it's just rated.

Game least worth playing was Fire Emblem Warriors. In many ways feels like a step down from Hyrule Warriors. The roster is full of clones and it doesn't have the game play variety of Hyrule Warriors. Feels lower budget and disappointing.

Last observation is that I was surprised to find out FF7 is actually pretty short, still plenty of time for anyone to play before the remake.

Outside of review codes, I didn't beat all that much this year.  I dabbled in plenty, and also spend a lot of time trying out games in beta/alphas, but this year marked more the year of "If I'm not enjoying my time with this anymore, don't chase bad time after good" for me.

Games I beat (or are run based):
God of War (PS4)
The Last of Us Remastered
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
Control
Toejam & Earl: Back in the Groove
Super Mario Maker 2?
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Outer Wilds
Risk of Rain 2
Dark Pictures: Man of Medan
Nowhere Prophet
Apex Legends
Final Fantasy IX

Games I played and want to finish:
River City Girls
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Luigi's Mansion 3
The Outer Worlds
Link's Awakening Remake
Untitled Goose Game
Neo Cab

Games I played but won't beat:
Crackdown 3
Void Bastards
Devolver Bootleg
My Friend Pedro

Games I want to play from 2019 but didn't get around to:
Life is Strange 2
Disco Elysium
Katana Zero
Astral Chain
Daemon X Machina
Slay the Spire
Persona Q2 (after I finish Persona 4 Golden)
Dragon Quest XI

Beyond the above, I played a ton of Rocket League throughout the year, and a BUNCH of Smash Bros over the holidays.  I've also done some rounds of Apex Legends and while I have fun with friends, It's something I could never bring myself to play solo.

List of games I beat for the first time in 2019.

Ninja Gaiden (NES)
Hollow Knight
Kero Blaster
Blaster Master Zero
Blaster Master Zero 2
Cuphead
Axiom Verge
Bleed
Bleed 2
Castlevania Bloodlines
Kid Dracula
Odallus: The Dark Call
Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer featuring The Legend of Zelda
Super Mario Maker 2
Super Meat Boy
Vice: Project Doom
Sega Ages: Lighting Force (Thunder Force IV)
Fatal Fury
Doom
Doom 2
Dark Souls

Games I played but didn't finish in 2019.

Star Soldier (NES)
Mighty Gunvolt Burst
R-Type Dimensions EX
VVVVVV
Castlevania 2: Simons Quest
Slain: Back to Hell
Contra (Arcade)
Contra (NES)
Crypt of the NecroDancer
Joe & Mac 2
Puyo Puyo Tsu
Fatal Fury Special

Games I've beaten in years prior but replayed again in 2019.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Blaster Master (NES)
Sega Ages: Sonic the Hedgehog
Castlevania (NES)
Super Castlevania IV
Super Mario Bros 3
Mega Man 1

So overall it was a decent year with some major accomplishments like finally beating the original Ninja Gaiden and playing Doom and Doom 2, things I've wanted to do for a long time.  I need to manage my time better though since I ended up buying around 90 games last year which made my backlog explode.  So here's hoping I can be more productive in 2020.

Dang - I had a list on backloggery, but cleared it out just before this topic was posted.  Oh well.

2019 was a pretty decent gaming year for me though. Had a month or two where work was busy and gaming died off... but otherwise, played a lot of games.  That was a huge improvement from 2018, when gaming fatigue hit and I only played through a handful of new games.

Highlights from last year include:
* Guacamelee - I had reasonably high expectations; the game exceeded them
* Layton and the Last Specter - after a long time without playing a Layton game, this was great
* Metroid Other M - a game with clear flaws... but I had a lot of fun with it!
* ToeJam & Earl - played together with my son; this was the first time finishing the game, so beating it together was a good experience

Also worth noting this was the first year in a long time that my backlog went down instead of increasing! Yay!

Why would you do that? Need to keep that list so you can reference it for topics like this! Too bad since I thought we might have quite a bit of overlap from Game Boy games plus maybe some other stuff like Metroid: Other M.

If I wasn't so lazy, I could piece much of it back together by looking through the old Backloggery dates and events... but that would take effort.  We did cover a lot of common ground last year though!
