Title: Can you name the Video Game Systems (released in the U.S.)?
Post by: vudu on December 04, 2008, 04:44:07 PM
Apparently there have been 69 video game systems released in the USA.  How many of them can you name?

Click here to take the test. (http://www.sporcle.com/games/videogame_systems.php)  Once you begin you'll have 12 minutes to finish.

Granted, some of these are completely bogus, but it's a fun time-waster nonetheless.

I managed to name 33 systems without cheating.

I got 39.  I would have hit 40, but I couldn't remember the right name for the TurboGrafx portable.  Of the ones I missed, I might have been able to come up with 8 given infinite time.

I had no idea there were FIVE versions of the Odyssey.  That really hurt me.  I also somehow completely blocked out the Virtual Boy.  I'm so ashamed.

I got 39. I clicked the link that ranks them from most guessed to last. I got the top 38 and number 40 (which I guess Odyssey2

I like the way that I actually own one of the console that I didn't guess because seriously, it shouldn't count. If you can buy a console for $20 at a supermarkt, it doesn't count.

Can't believe I forgot gme and watch and Gizmondo.

I got 41. I got all of them within a few minutes (and a 42nd that I couldn't remember the exact name of) and then spent 8 minutes trying to think of more with no luck.

46 out of 69.

Missed the Arcadia 2001 because I forgot the 1.  Tried variations of Arcadia 1000, 2000, 5000.  I knew OF the console and remembered it but couldn't remember that one detail.  I always just call it the Arcadia.  Tripped up on Amiga CD32.  I thought it was called the "Amiga 32CD", was unsure if it was released in America or just Europe and gave up.

There's some wishy-washy stuff about names.  I had to type "Sega Master System" instead of just "Sega" but "Nintendo" works for Nintendo Entertainment System and when I typed "Atari" I meant "Atari 2600" and the thing acknowledged it for Pong?

And Sega Master System II and Intellivision II are NOT different consoles and shouldn't count.  Same console, different packaging.  If they count then renames like DS Lite and Game Boy Micro should as well.  So I consider myself having got 46/67.  But then technically the Nomad and TurboExpress shouldn't count either since they're portable versions of consoles already on the list.  Ideally what FORMATs of games exist is what should really count.  Like how games were made for the Genesis format and the Genesis, Nomad, and CDX can all play them.

I'm hitting myself for forgetting N-Gage and LaserActive.  Other stuff is either something I've never heard of or something I typically wouldn't consider like the Atari Flashback.  Non-programmable consoles are iffy inclusions anyway.  Does every Tiger Electronics game count then?  Shouldn't EVERY individual Game & Watch count?  I tried to put in Stunt Cycle which is just as valid as Pong but it wasn't counted.

I was expecting add-ons like the Sega CD and 32X to be included and they weren't which really tripped me up.  They didn't include Sega Pico but that's an iffy inclusion.  They also excluded the Atari XEGS which though a repackaging of Atari 8-bit computers did have specific XEGS branded games made for it so for me it counts.  It's really no different than the Amiga CD32.

This made me realize that I am a HUGE videogame hardware dork.  I know a lot more about this stuff than I probably should. :)

I know, that was one of the first ones I tried! It's so memorable because of it's PS3-arang trackball controller...

But did the Pippin ever come out?

I'm umm... hitting myself for forgetting... the N-Gage... and umm... the Dreamcast. *please don't hurt me*

The Pippin's a computer, so it doesn't count for the same reason that the Commodore didn't.

The Pippin is as much a computer as the XBox was.
