Glad to hear Greg's reflection on XC2; I happen to agree with him like 99.9%, including the comparison between it and XCX.

Anyway, great episode. Thank you.

Was hoping X2... but I can settle for a Xenoblade 2, if X2 can come after that, I guess...

OK. I mean, if we aren't getting any info in 2016 then Jan 12, 2017 is pretty much as early as we can get, isn't it? Like TOPHATANT has said, throw in Monolithsoft's console RPG (preferably X-2) and I can die happy.

50K a week for a niche game on an unsuccessful console, seems about right to me. Not great, but not terrible either. I really like the game, especially the gameplay mechanics; I want it to have sold more, but given the reality, I would say this number is more or less expected. I just hope Nintendo/Atlus is realistically content with this and will continue to have projects like this in the future.

Almost 400m for digital sales is pretty nice. The Amiibo money is good (but not something to be relied on) and 1.8m copies of FE Fates without EU is insane. Other numbers are shitty though...

Overall, kinda decent results, I guess? Hope the NX can turn the table, although I really won't bet on it.

Not to sound cliché, but this podcast rules! Totally enjoyed this 2-hour show, great to hear most of the points being made here, be it praise or criticism. Hope to have more episodes like this, I mean, in depth discussions/analysis of a single recent game, though I guess there might not be that many games like XCX, which is so interesting to talk about because its strengths and flaws are just both so remarkable.

I'm not sure if I have you folks added on Wii U. What are your NNIDs? Mine's Mop_it_up.

For NNIDs you can click on a user's forum ID to open up his/her NWR forum profile page. I think most of us have listed our NNID there.

For ygg tickets run (and also item drop that requires breaking appendages), I highly recommend the "ME or SA M-Missile build" detailed in this GameFAQs thread: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/701151-xenoblade-chronicles-x/73104108

With that, I can easily break most of Ygg's breakable parts in about a minutes, then abandon mission and repeat. It is IMO as efficient as ticket farming can get. Of course, you will need to do a bit of grinding before you can have this ultimate grinding machine (I call it Mastema Appendage Crusher ;D ). Getting 2 ME or SA missiles with custom magazine traits can be a pain in the ass, but I can assure you that pain is absolutely worth it. The first time I fired a round of M-Missiles and see a Lepyx's legs exploding (literally) in fire simultaneously, it is one of the most satisfying moment in XCX for me :P: . With that, grinding almost feels too easy (and becomes a joy?), you don't have to rely on joining 3 other players unless you want others to benefit from your build as well (which is perfectly fine, of course).

If you also want to actually make your Skells (or ground gears) powerful enough to tackle the super bosses (that's why you grind for tickets, right?) though, you will need something else. Zenith cannon is one, most people have known it. But I also want to recommend the diskbomb. A thread that describes its awesomeness can be found at http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/701151-xenoblade-chronicles-x/73089986?page=1 (post #15)

TalkBack / Re: Fire Emblem Fates Shattering US Sales Records

I remember when Fire Emblem titles allowed you to choose a certain storyline path without having to pay for it. Those were the days.

And thanks for the clarification, Don.

Which game(s) do this? I've only played Awakening and Fates, but I really like both of them and would love to go back and play some of the older ones

Like broodwars has said, The Sacred Stones has branching paths, but that is only a 6-chapter difference. It is nothing like Fates where the branching paths are 23 chapters' long which is the majority of the game. Thracia 776 has branching paths as well, but that is like 3 chapters. New Mystery of the Emblem has you choose your opponents during the first few tutorial chapters, buy those are super short tutorial fights. What I'm trying to say is, the "path splits" situation of Fates has never happened in Fire Emblem games before and comparing previous smaller scale path choices to it serve no purpose other than confusing people that are not as familiar with the franchise.

Really impressive numbers. Congrats to IS/Nintendo/Treehouse for the achievement. Currently on Conquest chapter 15, really liking it so far. Gameplay wise there are substantial improvements over the Awakening formula; the balance tweaks (classes, leveling up, skills, pair up & dual strikes) deserve high praise. The story is weak and the characters are bland though. Still, overall I like what I'm seeing so far, and it is a competent step-up from Awakening. Here's hoping the next installment (on home console, pretty please?) can move on from the Awakening/Fates engine and rise even higher.

Again, I couldn't care less about trivial stuffs like this, but I do remember the outrage there was when people found out about this "feature" exists and the whining about FE games degrading into otaku pervy "Vita games". So I guess people should be happy now, right?

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 458: Auguratio Ex Japonicum
« on: January 11, 2016, 08:46:45 AM »
Great lists and predictions, totally enjoyed them. XCX is also my GOTY. It has like a sight-seeing (seriously, it has these locations it calls itself sight-seeing spots, most of which do live up to that name) exploration game, a monopoly like "how to optimize you gain" board game, and a Japanese role playing "how to build the most OP character/skell" number game all in this one package. And surprisingly all these 3 games are really good.

Yes, it has some serious flaws. The UI has lots of room for improvement; the main story's narrative is kinda weak; and the pop-ins are bad, especially in NLA. But the things it does right, you bet your ass they are jaw-droppingly amazing. It might be rough around many edges, but it surely is ambitious as heck, probably more ambitious than its budget allows. I just hope that one of its most ambitious achievements, the beautiful world of Mira will have a place in the history of gaming.

Water Purification quest line is awesome, as are the Professor B and Church/Equality lines of the game. The quests add a lot of character and depth to the story, and though they don't factor much into the overall narrative of the game its still nice that Monolith seems to have diversified their quest lines since the original Xenoblade.

Yeah, some of the normal missions are really good. While affinity missions are normally more about party members (most of which are bland, sadly), normal missions revolve more around the residents of NLA and Mira, be it humans or aliens or both. Their living experience, co-existence and interactions adds so much in the game's world building effort, making NLA a believably vibrant place to indulge in. It's real shame that cut scenes of normal missions are not voiced and when shown with lengthy texts with a million words many gamer might feel inclined to skip. Sure, there are cost and disc space limitations but still, a real shame.

R will cycle through the targeted enemy in a battle.

hold R + Y (switch to the left enemy) or A (right) to have a bit more control, if you will.

I only found out about things like this by reading the manual after beating the game, and I was like why wasn't these explained in the game!

Is it just me, or is the boss in Chapter 9 ridiculously hard? The first sequence took a few tries, but I was lucky enough I guess Elma didn't die before I killed the minions (and stared dishing out 20k dmg?). The 2nd sequence twice I've come very close to killing him, but at 1/8 health he blows up all three Skells in succession (If Elma doesn't die early) and that is it. I've purposely avoided lowering the difficulty, but hell the game was not this difficult up until this point. And everyone is level 40.

The extra party members aren't horrible (except Hector), but overall they range from average to slightly above average. Idk I like Alexa myself. Just not enough character delved into there.

Loving the Beam Saber/ Psycho Blaster Class (Galactic Knight). Shield Trooper was disappointing and the Sword/Assault Rifle class was okay, but kind of boring. Galatic Knight is quick high melee damage. I just need to solve my problem with lack of TP.

There is definitely a difficulty spike at Chapter 9. However, if you have everybody at lv40 and least 3 skells (and I suppose they are the lv30 ones), chances are you should be perfectly capable of dealing with it. You should use the "concentrate fire" option in the battle menu during this whole fight. Focus on the skell piloted by the cat woman first. Once hers is down, start on lion man's. Keep in mind that when he drops to below half health and summons those lv 32 skells to join the fight, he enters this period of invincibility. That is when you should switch to clear out the grunts first.

With 3 lv30 skells and lv40 Lin who receives the huge +60% defense bonus from the skell allies, you should have a very good chance of surviving long enough to annihilate the enemies.

Great show as always. I just want to say thanks to James, Jonny, and the rest of the RFN crew, I had great fun in 2015 despite it being a somewhat sluggish year for Nintendo. Keep up the good work and make it even better, guys.

Lucina in a bride outfit, that's how that they got me? I'm so helpless. :-\

Well, I didn't touch the original because I heard lots of people talking negatively about it. Let's hope the issues are addressed this time around; NBGI bothers to make a sequel of it, that must mean they really want this to be thing, right?

Well, I have always been for "Wii U as a 2nd console", and I can totally see that $300 is probably too much for that. So, why not release a cheaper bundle with the pro controller rather than the game pad? Sure, you HAVE to use the game pad for system settings, but guess what, you used to HAVE to use the game pad for eShop as well; Nintendo released just a system update and you can use the pro controller for that from then on. It is not rocket science and Nintendo can certainly do it if they feel like to. Yes, some games, including the Wii U game of 2015 - Splatoon (and probably Super Mario Maker) require the game pad and there's no easy way around it. Still, a cheaper bundle that doesn't hurt Nintendo's bottom line while providing a better value proposition as a secondary console for a wider audience sounds like a really good idea to me; it is at least worth trying. Granted, releasing a Wii U SKU without the game pad is like a slap in the face for Nintendo. However, given the dire situation, I don't think Nintendo is in the position of saving faces.

Decent financial results. Nothing spectacular (maybe except Splatoon which is doing really great) but things seem to be improving. The most positive thing I see here is the digital sales number. It went from 5 billion yen a year ago to 12 billion this quarter. The total software revenue is 45.372 billion which means digital sales account for more than a quarter of that! This is really great news and I hope it makes Nintendo realize how important digital sales are to them, especially when their presence at retail is shrinking so rapidly due to losing in the competition. Step up you game, Nintendo. Do what you will and make your partnership with DeNA on account system fruitful, and remove any obstacles that could possibly stop gamers from buying your game digitally. You had no idea how important this is to you.

Sounds cool. As much as I’m tired of side scrollers (there really have been a shitload of them in the recent years, no matter how good some of them are), I might still get this when there is a Steam sale.

Nice write-up, Neal. Appreciate it. I hope NWR will also make a compilation of all the wonderful fan arts that have been flooding the internet these past few days, if it is permitted of course.
