Electroplankton Comes to DSiWare
« on: July 06, 2009, 02:00:39 PM »
Players will be able to download the rare DS game in pieces.

Electroplankton, which was originally released on the DS in 2006, is coming to Japanese DSiWare soon.

The game is a music-making tool where players manipulate neon fish in order to produce various sounds or music. There were ten different musical programs in the retail version of Electroplankton. These programs will be split up into separate releases on DSiWare for 200 DSi Points ($2) each.

Here is the release schedule for the Electroplankton titles in Japan:

July 8: Tracy, Hanenbon, Nanocarp, BeatNES

July 22: Rec Rec, Lumiloop

August: Sun Animalcule, Luminarian, Marine Snow, Volvoice

There are currently no plans for release of these titles outside of Japan right now.

So twenty dollars for the whole business? Not bad. A bit more than I ended up paying for a used copy of Electroplankton, but that's only because of my discount.

The original game was $35. It had no save feature and lacked the free earphones that came with the Japanese copy of the game. The game soon became super expensive due to the fact that in the US the game was only sold online (even in Canada it was only available at EB Games). I wanted the game, but I wasn't gonna pay $35 +tax when it didn't even have a save feature (so you could spend an hour creating a song and it will be deleted the moment you turn your system off). I may get these if they have save features.

It's painfully obvious that you A. have never played Electronplankton, and B. completely misunderstand the point of it.

I understand it was supposed to a musical experiment and not a game, which is why $35 was a rip-off price. Anything over $20 would be a screw-you price from Nintendo. If they had the balls to charge $35 for it, the LEAST they could have done was let people save the music they created. I'm sorry, but there is no way to justify Nintendo's actions with it.

This seems oddly similar to Jonny's Retro Game Challenge 2 proposal from RFN.

Nintendo themselves obviously knew not many people would pay that price, hence why they only sold it online (and only for a few months).

I've been reading on some forums (I'm a cheater) where some people are under the impression that $2 will get you two bundled Electroplankton (so the whole package would be $10).  Wonder if there's any truth to that.

Anywhoo, I don't get how $20 is a bad price.  It's about half the price of the original release and far less than it sells for on the second hand market.  Plus, you get to try it out before diving into the whole thing.
Just some random guy on the internet who has a different opinion of games than you.
