As the RFN crew is taking the week off, Newscast delivers with a voice longtime RFN fans should be familiar with.  Karl Casteneda joins us to discuss the last few weeks worth of news, and brings along New Business with him.    


Zach is only able to join the 'cast for the first half this time around, but he gives his thoughts on Video Game Cheesecake.   Neal gives early impressions of NBA Jam, and Andy tries to understand the Pokemon phenomenon.

20-30 levels into Alpha Bounce? Yes, that's truly not even scratching the surface. Most planets have 29 levels (you don't need to beat all of them to finish the game but beating all levels of a planet will give you another paddle type), there are 27 planets in the game from what I heard plus the distances between them can get quite large and while you'll likely only take the direct paths to the planets and items there's still MANY other squares in the galaxy map. They advertise something like 16 million levels, they're definitely procedurally generated (though the algorithm gives some pretty nice results) and that would mean the universe map would be something like 2000x2000 squares.

BTW, there's a port of Mega Man 2 for the iPhone. It's got some seriously wonky physics, kinda like the Sonic Genesis game for the GBA.

I personally loved the Mega Man 2 iPhone port. I found it completely playable after they patched it, but of course I prefer the VC version because I can use physical buttons. Since one of my favorite parts about MM2 is the music, I don't feel too bad if I perform sloppily on the iPhone version.

Halbred,  I'd at least stick with Odin Sphere until you can get to the 2nd character.   I enjoyed playing the game a bit more after I got past Gwendolyn; I actually kind of thought she was the least interesting character.   

I noticed that the difficulty spike of the game gets a lot worse about halfway through, and seeing the same areas over and over again get pretty boring.  Taking the game in small doses helps.   I'll admit that I eventually did give up on the game before I beat it, though...the final boss was just wicked hard, and I found that I just didn't care enough to keep beating my head against the wall.

The game's still sitting in my PS2, so I may well do that.

Loved hearing favorable impressions about Art of Balance.  I think it's one of those games that quickly got overlooked, but is really a decent puzzle game for anyone interested in that sort of thing.  There are a handful of WiiWare titles like that: hidden gems, just waiting for someone to give them a shot.
 
It made me laugh when Cubello didn't get such a good reaction though... I kind of like the way that game lulls you into an almost hypnotic trance with the weird robotic voice and ability to play (on lower levels) without thinking, but can totally understand why people wouldn't like it.

Cubello is stupid fun. I love the presentation, but the gameplay is definitely shallow and sometimes frustratingly random. It probably should have been priced at $5 or less.

By the way guys, the Newscast intro was great. I did a sort of double-take when the old RFN theme ("I'm a New Man") started.

Don't want to step on Jonny's toes here, but it's a Penny Arcade reference to Bioshock 2. That game's penultimate villain, Sophia Lamb, now controls the undersea dystopia of Rapture. In many places in the game, "Lamb is watching" is scrawled on the walls.

Tycho & Gabe added "the" to the beginning of that phrase for a completely different take on it.
