...wait, this had MINIGAMES?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/64941/kirby-and-the-amazing-mirror-blowing-into-gba-library-september-29

The next addition to the Expansion Pack may cause some historic multiplayer.

Kirby and the Amazing Mirror has been revealed as the next game in the Game Boy Advance library, launching on September 29. The 2004 platformer was in the original wave of GBA announcements.

The trailer (below) shows off four player online play for both the main story and some minigames.

Wait, a Trails series we can get in on the ground floor on?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/64879/nintendo-download-september-21-2023

Things we missed last week: Well, we predicted the Direct which added NSO subscription incentive F-Zero 99, strategy title Wartales, racing sequel Horizon Chase 2, and rhythm shitpost Trombone Champ. The Archives title, added in the educational section of every prison ever, is Jail Break from Konami.

I spent most of the last week getting my tabletop on in Gloomhaven, but for my money the big game of the week is the first game of a new Legend of Heroes series in The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails if only because it won't require me to win the national lottery in order to play it before the sequel comes out. The highest price tag of the week goes to Mortal Kombat 1, which is just as broken as fellow $70 game Tears of the Kingdom, but with MK1 everyone actually sees it.

Name of the week honors goes to Mon-Yu, or as it's officially called... deep breath "Mon-Yu: Defeat Monsters And Gain Strong Weapons And Armor. You May Be Defeated, But Don’t Give Up. Become Stronger. I Believe There Will Be A Day When The Heroes Defeat The Devil King". And the Japanese name is longer. Smaller titles on the dock include a revival of... Operation Wolf? oooook.... alongside Days of Doom from Atari and the tasteful You Suck At Parking.

TalkBack / Gloomhaven (Switch) Review In Progress
« on: September 18, 2023, 12:00:00 AM »

Fire Emblem, Dungeons and Dragons, and Magic: The Gathering walk into a tavern… that was one wild party.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/64757/gloomhaven-switch-review-in-progress

Author’s note; The review is in progress as a key portion of the game - the cross-platform multiplayer - is not available due to the Steam client not being updated during the review period to support it.

Launching this week on Switch, Gloomhaven was known to me for two reasons; it’s my roommate’s second tabletop game when Dungeons and Dragons isn’t an option, and it’s got an absolutely massive box which holds more cards than the Las Vegas Strip. Needless to say, it’s definitely preferable to have the game in a digital format, and now that it’s been brought to Switch it might be the most convenient way to spend a hundred hours. Though there are still some things that show this as perhaps too straight of a copy of the existing PC version.

The core of Gloomhaven is a strategy RPG set in the titular town, where your character starts out in one of six different classes based on the standard RPG characters; the fighter is called a Brute, the mage a Spellweaver, and the thief a Scoundrel. The “Guildmaster” mode is required first, as the player has to at least see the classes in action before a “Campaign” can be started. Campaign is where I spent most of my time, since this is the portion of the physical board game I had the most experience with. In the campaign, a built character is assigned a personal mission based on the class, such as killing a large number of enemies in a single class (there are normal, “elite”, and boss monsters), and completes maps in the world while building up toward the completion of the personal goal. Once the personal goal is completed, the character can “retire”, which unlocks additional classes and allows the character to be rerolled. This rerolled character will start out more powerful than the first, so it’s important to snowball through characters quickly.

Once an event is started either in Guildmaster or Campaign mode, the characters are sent into a hex-based dungeon with objectives that were familiar to me from Fire Emblem games. There were rout maps labeled “kill all foes”, boss-killing objectives, and a form of seize map where instead of a throne, it required obtaining a specific item. The combat is based on cards, as each character enters battle with ten battle cards that are used to determine the character actions. Two actions are available on each card, and two cards are played at a time; if the top action of a card is chosen the bottom of the other card must also be chosen (though elements can be skipped, and “basic” actions such as moving two spaces or attacking with a base stat of 2 are also offered). The cards have an initiative number rated 1 to 99, with the first card chosen setting the turn order for the players and enemies in numerical order; ties appear to go in alphabetic order of the involved character’s names. Once played, the cards are discarded unless the chosen action requires “burning” the card which removes it from play permanently. Cards can be recovered via the “short rest” or “long rest” commands, which on a short rest requires burning a random card to recover the discard pile (rerolling can be done once, with a health penalty). A long rest is a 99 initiative command that prevents the player from moving or attacking for the turn, but recovers 2 hit points when the character will likely never exceed 20 and allows the player to determine which card to burn while they recover the rest of the discard pile. If all cards are burned, or the character’s health reaches 0, they are considered “exhausted” and are removed from the map: all characters being removed is considered a loss.

If an expansion with a single character is almost as big as my Switch, imagine what the full thing looks like.

Each of the battle commands on the cards has a prescribed attack damage and range, though the damage can be modified by buffs and debuffs on either side. Generally, the more powerful an attack is, the more likely it will require burning the card. Every player on the map also has a deck of attack modifiers that are also applied at random, ranging from x0 (which nullifies all damage though additional effects still apply) to x2. This deck can be modified by a perk system that can remove some of the negative modifiers, though the x0 and a few -1s will still be present even on the highest leveled characters. A perk is granted each time the character levels up, and side missions can be completed on each map that can provide one or two points toward the three necessary to purchase a perk. Perks can also be taken which can potentially add statuses such as poisoning, stunning, or “muddle,” which forces the attacker to draw two modifiers and take the effect of the worst one.

Brute, by Aqueous. DPS *is* back..

Campaign is the main multiplayer mode of the game, which sets up one player as the host with “client” users entering a ten digit alphanumeric code to locate the game. Curiously, the code has “Copy” beside it, presumably a function on the PC where you’d copy and paste the code into a Discord chat but the Switch doesn’t really have a need for copy and paste, so why is it here now? There doesn’t appear to be a dedicated local multiplayer option; the code still required internet access even with my roommate on the same couch with a Switch copy. Additionally, the setting for crossplay must be identical for all copies of the game connecting. Once connected, the client player can be assigned to a character in the party or can roll their own. It’s a solid system that works well, but I would like to actually see how the crossplay holds up.

Some of the controls in the Switch version took some getting used to, and there are functions I’m still not 100% able to hit even after playing for most of a week. It’s not immediately obvious how to access the in-game item shop, and I found myself switching out of the character I was running in multiplayer to the other one far too frequently. Even some of the in-game commands took getting used to; my first character was in the “Mindthief” class, who has an attack option to make one enemy attack another. When using it, I would have to press A on the enemy to start it, confirm that I wanted them to be the one controlled by holding A, then repeat the process on the intended victim of the attack before it would actually fire. That’s two presses and two holds for one attack. I could see it if there were multiple potential targets in range, but when I’m staring down two skeletons right next to each other I should be able to select one and have it know to automatically go for the other. It switches between “press” commands and “press + hold” a lot, when it bothers to recognize them at all. (Which on the first night was about 70% of the time, though this issue was resolved in further testing.) One final issue - which apparently happens on PC as well - came when for some reason I could just not walk on a particular open tile in order to get at an enemy. This really threw off the map, though we did end up winning in the end.

The common Gloomhaven community standard is to keep things secret - particularly the per-map side quests, which the game only reveals at the end of the map - so the Switch is fundamentally a great platform to play the digital version on. It can kill a lot of time; each map takes about 45 minutes to an hour, even with or perhaps because I was playing with someone who knew how to manipulate the AI. But I never felt the game dragged at all, and would vastly prefer this digital copy to having to schlep around something bigger than every game console I’ve ever owned.

The good news is, there's still enough time for it to get a second lotcheck review.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/64873/long-threatened-remaster-of-plumbers-dont-wear-ties-receives-release-date

After being threatened on an annual basis for the last three summers, there is now a date attached to the remaster of Plumbers Don't Wear Ties.

In an announcement on Twitter, the service now known as X for some moronic reason, publisher Limited Run Games confirmed that the notorious FMV game would release digitally on December 8. The announcement was accompanied by the official opening of physical preorders for the game next Friday.

Many new first party trailers, though not as much in the way of new information

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/64850/first-party-direct-updates-pokemon-warioware-mario-rpg-luigis-mansion

Quick updates to previously announced Nintendo games from the Direct:

  • Detective Pikachu Returns (October 3) added a new Pokemon to the partner lineup in Luxray, who can see through walls and joining Growlithe and (Galarian) Darmanitan. A specific window beyond "winter" was not given for The Indigo Disk DLC for Scarlet and Violet

« on: September 14, 2023, 07:30:26 AM »

Is it any worse than stopping to talk about the Mario movie?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/64849/nintendo-museum-planned-for-kyoto-opening-by-end-of-fiscal-year

A brief interruption of the Direct announced that Nintendo is planning to show off more of their history.

After showing off a Mario ? block design on the roof, it was confirmed that a "museum" will be a part of a new Nintendo building in Kyoto, and is targeting a launch by the end of March 2024. According to Nintendo, it will contain "a wide variety of products from Nintendo's history".

The museum will be based out of a renovated console repair facility that was closed in 2016 known as "Nintendo Uji Ogura Plant".

  • The final Super Smash Bros. Ultimate amiibo - Sora - will be released sometime in 2024, roughly two and a half years after the character's release in the second Fighter's Pass.

TalkBack / New Details Given For Splatoon 3, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC
« on: September 14, 2023, 07:13:19 AM »

At least the "No Side Order" sign only had to be tapped once.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/64847/new-details-given-for-splatoon-3-mario-kart-8-deluxe-dlc

Two bits of outstanding DLC were discussed in today's Direct for two Switch megahits.

The Direct kicked off with the Splatoon 3 "Side Order" DLC, introducing a new character named "Acht" (the number 8 in German) and showing off some of the gameplay. Originally announced for a fall 2023 release, the second part of the Expansion Pass will now launch in spring 2024.

The final portion of the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC was also shown with a returning course (Mario Kart Wii's Daisy Circuit) and the final four racers: Kongs Diddy and Funky, Pauline, and as one final bit of Mario Kart Tour preservation the notorious Peachette. It was reconfirmed for a holiday release.

Sadly, Trombone Champ does not appear to include "Through the Fire and Flames".

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/64846/directs-other-shadowdrops-include-trombone-champ-and-demo-of-dave-the-diver

One of the wildest PC party games is coming to Switch with a very rarely used control method included.

Four player rhythm game Trombone Champ - a rhythm game focused on the large woodwind - is one of the Direct's shadowdrops. As the game is focused on moving a mock trombone up and down the screen, it will support a motion option via the right Joy-Con's infrared camera.

Also dropped today (aside from F-Zero 99) are open world strategy RPG Wartales from Shiro Interactive, an Epic Games-published sequel to Horizon Chase Turbo (Horizon Chase 2), and a demo for another popular PC indie game in Dave the Diver (full launch October 26).

OK, I want to see proof of anyone who had this on the bingo card in the Talkback.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/64844/another-code-games-including-wii-title-unreleased-in-north-america-being-remade-for-january-launch

A pair of adventure titles from the late 2000s are coming out of nowhere for a Switch rescue.

"Another Code: Recollection" is a Switch remaster of Another Code: Two Memories (or "Trace Memory" in North America) and Another Code R: A Journey into Lost Memories (never released in NA), the 2005 and 2009 adventure titles developed by the late developer Cing. Recollections will launch on January 19.

TalkBack / Princess Peach: Showtime Launching March 22

This is really going to jack up her Smash moveset.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/64843/princess-peach-showtime-launching-march-22

The "untitled Peach game" is not only titled, it's also been dated.

Originally announced in June's direct, the Peach-starring game was shown today as "Princess Peach: Showtime" and will launch on March 22. In the game, Princess Peach can don various costumes including a patisserie (baker), detective, and swiordfighter in order to save areas from an evil gang.

TalkBack / Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door Remake Announced For 2024

We'll be over here folding origami.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/64841/paper-mario-thousand-year-door-remake-announced-for-2024

The most beloved Mario RPG since the original is getting a 20th anniversary touch-up.

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door HD was the "one more thing" of today's Nintendo Direct, announcing a 2024 release. The original title released in 2004 on the GameCube, and the remaster trailer did not make any announcements of additional content.

Would it surprise you to know that their current CEO used to hold a similar position at EA?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/64839/unity-planning-per-install-fees-to-developers-and-platform-holders-despite-massive-backlash

Unity - the engine behind many popular productions in spaces from AAA to the shovelware peddlers of the Switch - is under fire today following a new fee structure that would be charged to developers and potentially platform holders.

As announced yesterday by Unity CEO John Riccitello, the new structure would involve games that reach a certain number of installs (200,000) being charged $0.20 / installation of the game with lower charges ($0.05 and $0.01) depending on sales volume. This would apply beginning January 1, 2024 and would affect both titles already released and released in the future.

Originally, it was believed that the fee would literally be per-install, resulting in a potential situation where a game could be repeatedly reinstalled running up a new fee each time. Unity has confirmed that the proposed fee would only be on the first install per device, but would still apply if it was installed on a standard Switch and a Switch Lite or a PC and a Steam Deck. Demos and games included in charity bundles (such as the Humble Bundle) were also confirmed to be exempt from the charges.

The backlash has been swift, with Devolver Digital threatening to pull their popular Unity-developed game Cult of the Lamb from digital storefronts on January 1, 2024 if the fee is not dropped. As well, a controversial provision would result in platform holders who make the games available via subscription services (such as a Switch Online game trial or more prominently Microsoft's Game Pass) bear the costs; the platform holders have not commented on such an obvious swipe at their subscription revenue.

TalkBack / Mario Kart Tour To Enter Maintenance Mode In October
« on: September 11, 2023, 04:17:38 AM »

And we didn't even get the Fire Emblem crossover via Elimine.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/64832/mario-kart-tour-to-enter-maintenance-mode-in-october

Mario Kart Tour is getting the caution flag.

In an announcement today of upcoming content, it was announced that the tour beginning on October 4 (the "Battle Tour") will be the final tour to add new racers, courses, or cart parts. The tour following (a Halloween-themed tour launching on the 18th) will be the first to run as a repeat.

Mario Kart Tour went live in September 2019 and was originally set up as a gacha game, though it switched to a cash model in October of last year. Multiple tracks in the game have also been included as part of the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass.

TalkBack / Nintendo Downloads - September 14, 2023
« on: September 11, 2023, 04:00:00 AM »

Sounds like a big week for fans of silent towns and IBM.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/64768/nintendo-downloads-september-14-2023

Things we missed last week: NBA 2K24 (now with Kobe Bryant hagiography), Zing Zing ZIp in the Archives, and a game that surprisingly is not about The Colossus of Boggo Road who famously botched a spinkick and fell flat on his arse.

Last week nearly doubled between the first and last of the week and we're starting in the high 30s out of Japan even before a potential Festivus later on this week could lead to shadowdrops ahoy. (And based on last year, it's 95% farm sim by volume.) The biggest release by dollars is the digital deluxe edition of Mortal Kombat 1, with the biggest in terms of time going to a pair of 100+ Monolith (and monolithic) RPGs in the Baten Kaitos collection. If you prefer games that may go endless for other reasons, there's also a Super Bomberman R2 launch.

The download space is headed by a surprising port from the PS5 by way of the Series in Solar Ash, and a game we've seen at a few indie shows in the tricky-to-speak AK-xolotl. We do also have to sound the Syrenne McNulty alarm with the launch of Escape Academy via iam8bit.

Real "guy in your work group who doesn't do a thing" energy coming out of the ESA right now.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/64761/pax-organizers-cut-ties-with-esa-over-administration-of-e3-2024-show-officially-out-of-la-convention-center-if-it-happens-at-all

The organizers of the PAX shows and this past weekend's Nintendo Live have apparently had enough of the ESA when it comes to a revival of the moribund E3 show.

As first reported by subsidiary company GamesIndustry.biz, ReedPop and the ESA have terminated an agreement whereby the convention specialists would run the logistics of a revived E3 show. The decision, reportedly a mutual one, comes after multiple game companies pulled out of E3 2023 resulting in its cancellation: the show has not run in this decade to a combination of the COVID-19 pandemic, competition from the Geoff Keighley-organized Summer Games Fest, and rank incompetence.

In addition to the announcement of the split, the story also confirms that the ESA has informed the Los Angeles Convention Center (the show's home for most of the quarter century of its life) that they would not put a show on there in 2024. This corroborates a story we reported in June from the Los Angeles County Commissioners that E3 was "cancelled" for the LACC in both 2024 and 2025. Allegedly, the ESA is working on a "complete reinvention" of the show for 2025.

Two of those imports being Nintendo games.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/64754/three-imports-and-game-boy-color-zelda-like-added-to-switch-online-basic-libraries

The retro libraries for the basic tier of Nintendo Switch Online have added four titles, though it may be more accurate to refer to them as Famicom and Super Famicom updates.

  • Downtown Nekketsu March Super-Awesome Field Day (1990 - Famicom) is a four player action sports title that is one of the most beloved titles in the extended Kunio-Kun franchise. It has been previously re-released on Switch as part of the 2020 Double Dragon & Kunio-Kun Retro Brawler Bundle.
  • Joy Mech Fight (1993 - Famicom) is one of the last Famicom releases from Nintendo before the transition full time to the Super Famicom, and was known as both the first fighting game from Nintendo after Urban Champion and for possessing some of the Famicom's highest quality audio and video.
  • Kirby's Star Stacker (1998 - Super Famicom) is a Super Famicom remake of the 1997 Game Boy puzzle game, in which Kirby and the friends from the Dark Matter trilogy have to clear fields of stars.
  • Quest for Camelot (1998 - Game Boy Color) is the sole game in this update wave that previously released outside Japan. The overhead action title is based on a poor-performing 1998 animated movie of the same name from Warner Bros., and was developed with assistance from Nintendo despite being published by the late Titus Interactive.

I think I'd rather have this than Starcraft 64 on NSO, but I'm alone there.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/64753/switch-version-of-classic-real-time-strategy-game-company-of-heroes-announced-launching-in-autumn

For the first time ever, one of the most popular real time strategy games is coming to a Nintendo console - or any console.

A remastered version of 2006's seminal WWII strategy game Company of Heroes has been announced for Switch by developer Feral Interactive; it will launch this autumn as the Company of Heroes Collection as it will include the base game as well as its expansions "Opposing Fronts" and "Tales of Valor".

The realistic strategy game was developed by Relic Entertainment (now owned by Sega) and was published by the previous iteration of THQ; infamously, it was also the first game to be published on the magazine-killing "Games For Windows" initiative. A version of the game was released for Apple's iPad in late 2020.

Let's hope Bandai Namco have XSEED on line 2.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/64751/ds-cult-classic-retro-game-challenge-getting-japanese-compilation-rerelease

In honor of the source material's 20th anniversary, a pair of cult classics from Japan are getting a Switch "replay".

GameCenter CX: Arino no Chōsenjō 1+2 Replay has been announced by publisher Bandai Namco in a new trailer; although no release date was given, it will be appearing at the Tokyo Game Show later this month. The game will combine the original two GameCenter CX: Arino no Chōsenjō games from the DS, which create pastiches of classic Famicom (and later Game Boy, Super Famicom, and Game & Watch) games. The "Replay" will include an exclusive game, a pastiche of River City Ransom.

The original game was localized by XSEED in 2009 as "Retro Game Challenge", though due to low sales the second game (which released around the time of RGC's release) was Japan-only. No western release has been announced for Replay.

One is familiar, the other ones not so much.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/64749/nintendo-releasing-trio-of-bundles-on-october-6

Nintendo of America has announced a trio of Switch bundles for the return of Detective Pikachu.

The bundle of a standard Switch that includes Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and a three month NSO (standard, individual) membership traditionally offered around Black Friday, will instead launch on October 6. On the same day, a pair of Switch Lite bundles which include digital copies of Animal Crossing: New Horizons will go on sale. All bundles will be sold at standard MSRP ($299.99 for the MK8 bundle, $199.99 for the Lites), and the Lites will be pink (Isabelle themed) or green (Timmy and Tommy themed).

Nintendo of Europe has confirmed the Lites will appear alongside a bundle with Nintendo Switch Sports the same day. All of these bundles are launching the same day as Detective Pikachu Returns.

Things we missed last week: Digital Eclipse's The Making Of: Karateka on Tuesday, 30XX on Friday, and Archives title Cadash on Thursday.

Last week ended up in the 50s for release (aside from Japan), so this week is of course on the lighter side. Sadly, we're probably getting Festivus NEXT week (because TGS is the week of the 21st). The theme this week is getting down on the farm, as we have no less than three farm sims on a mid-20s release count: Fae Farm (the game from like, six Nintendo Directs and Opening Night Live), Rune Factory 3 Special (review forthcoming), and Sprout Valley. The other retail release of the week is Anonymous;Code from Spike Chunsoft.

Smaller titles include Indie World veteran Chants of Sennaar, and a building horror theme with No Son of Mine and the boomer shooter Night at the Gates of Hell (from Puppet Combo). A Europe-only (for now) release is Old School, a Bully-like from the creator of Wrestling Empire.

This weekend's Nintendo Live show in Seattle has shown more gameplay from Super Mario Bros. Wonder following this week's Direct.

The gameplay showed both single and multiplayer gameplay - including two and four player local-cop and some online methods being shown as part of the stage. The roughly 20 minute video can be found below:

Nintendo is also streaming tournaments at the Labor Day weekend event, although the Smash Bros Ultimate tourney was a team-based (Squad Strike) tourney.
