General Chat / Re: Moving to Florida
« on: October 19, 2008, 03:19:35 AM »
I go to college in Jersey, but I've lived in southwest Florida all my life.

We're pretty sweet about voting here in Florida. I suggest you watch the film Recount to pump yourself up for the excitements of a Florida election, if you're into that sorta thing.

General Chat / Re: Anyone an Avatar fan?
« on: July 26, 2008, 12:32:44 PM »
I read that the creators of Avatar found M. Night Shyamalan's (sp) script for the first film even more faithful to the story than they would've personally had it (they suggested some things to change, but they loved what he did), so I don't think we need to worry about some stupid twists.

Fantastic finale to a wonderful (and underrated!) series. It makes me sad that it's over, but I guess we'll see what happens with the series in the future. I expected them to make a future Avatar and wrap up some of the loose ends of this storyline in that one, but I hadn't considered the point about the air benders dying out.

I'll go with good luck.

I think it's great that you're getting this opportunity to start over in a new place. Keep us updated!

I learned Spanish and English at practically the same time (Spanish slightly before, but before pre-k I somehow spoke English as well as all the other kids from watching TV). Looking at both languages objectively, I'd say English is considerably more difficult than Spanish. Spanish has fewer sounds, and the alphabet can very accurately represent what the words sound like: it's 100% phonetic. English writing looks rather silly by comparison. English verbs also seem to make less sense than Spanish verbs: irregulars don't seem to be anymore prevalent in Spanish than in English. I'd say English has more irregulars.

The most "difficult language to learn" is all relative to what language you're learning from, anyway. A Chinese person would obviously find another sino language easier than English, whereas a German would find it considerably more difficult. But I would also like to add, for what it's worth, that Spanish-speaking 3 year olds are considerably more eloquent than English-speaking 3 year olds. I'd say that's the best way to objectively measure how all languages compare, regardless of base language.

That's unbelievable...

I really hope everything works out for you.

On the bright side, at least now you got him out?

General Gaming / RE:EA/MTV signs MadCatz to make rock band peripherals
« on: January 06, 2008, 04:51:39 AM »
I don't think anything could be worse than the ones they already use, namely the guitar. I don't know anyone whose Rock Band guitar still works. The strum bar is annoying enough from the onset, but slowly strumming stops working altogether. The frets are loud and uncomfortable, and, eventually, unresponsive. It's just terrible. There's really not much room for MadCatz to more poorly design a guitar.

People just end up buying GH3 controllers anyway.

I'm going to have to double quote that one. I'm one of the only people I know that's still on their first PS2, and I know at least one person that has gone even further than a second.

For that reason alone I don't expect the Wii to top the PS2. However, considering how expanded the market truly has proven to be, you never know.

Sounds like they're planning it to be bigger than Wii Sports, which is saying a lot.

General Gaming / RE: I'm late to the party, I know, Katamari
« on: June 21, 2007, 03:45:13 PM »
I absolutely love Katamari Damacy. I actually quit gaming early 2002 after being sorely disappointed with gaming in general (Wind Waker was the last game I was willing to endure), and forgot about it until Katamari Damacy came along. I played it and couldn't put it down until I finished it, and promptly purchased the sequel upon release. For anyone that loves the original, the sequel is well worth it: it's basically the same game but better, which was by all means fine with me.

Amazing game, and one of my favorites of all time.

I enjoyed it. It's nice to hear a composer work with computers and not be seduced by the temptations of techno-like sounds.

That's a bummer. I remember in 2005 after Wilma when we lost power for a full week. I decided to teach myself piano, and was quite dedicated without the electronic distractions. I would probably be better off not owning any electronics...

Ah well.

Hope it works out well. Paying for the damage caused to our roof done by just wind was bad enough; can't imagine the damage done by a fallen tree in addition to that.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Wii Life Span
« on: June 15, 2007, 09:14:40 AM »
One thing that worries me most about Wii is 3rd-party support. If you take a look at sales of Spiderman 3--an unremarkable game, but a typical 3rd party game nonetheless--the PS3 version is outselling the Wii. I believe Godfather is also selling very similarly between PS3 and Wii. Considering the installed base, that doesn't seem to be a good sign to 3rd parties, especially when you factor in 360 sales, which dwarf both PS3 and Wii. Admittedly, Wii production costs are considerably lower, so that must make Wii more profitable than PS3, however it's still disconcerning, especially considering the inevitable PS3 price drop and the 360's popularity.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: NuGHTS is revived and Wiiing
« on: April 24, 2007, 02:41:04 PM »
I'm not so worried about the models as I am the lack of colorful vibrancy from the original. It seems a lot more bland (basically more 3D Sonic-esque and less Mario-esque). I really liked the cheerful, bright colors of the original and I hope that's something they bring back, lest we find ourselves with http://www.2pstart.com/2007/04/04/we-wouldnt-be-surprised/ . Right now it's looking like NiGHTS gameplay without the heart Sonic Team seemed to lose a few years back.

I finished it today, and I feel the same way. None of my real life friends have yet to finish it, and I really want to talk about it. But there are still those 24 heart pieces left! And poes and bugs!

I'm probably in the minority here (maybe the only one?), but MP didn't do that much for me. I really did try to like it: I even lied to myself for the first couple hours saying I did like it. But I didn't. I found more enjoyment out of SMS, SSBM, Pikmin, Wind Waker (even if it did pale in comparison to Nintendo's earlier efforts), not to mention the original Metroid and Super Metroid. The GCN was Nintendo's weakest generation in my eyes, and before the Wii (or rather, Revolution at the time) was announced, I was pretty firm on quitting gaming and not buying the next generation. NES was what got me into it all, and it was just amazing. The SNES added a lot more to that, with more classics (LttP <3). N64 changed the face of gaming. GameCube was just an extension of the N64 with less creativity, in my opinion.

So, no. The GCN, sadly, doesn't remind me of the NES.

But the Wii just might.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Now Sony Agrees: Everyone is Buying Wii
« on: May 14, 2006, 12:12:25 PM »
*Pats Perm on back*

It'll get better. We'll have the Wii .

I'm a bit surprised at Sony and Microsoft's comments, but I have more and more confidence that they're right on. Nobody's going to own both a PS3 and a 360: it'll be a Wii and one of the others. (Or, like in my case, just a Wii.) Even my sister wants to play a Wii, and she's about as non-gamer as it gets.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Those original IPs
« on: May 09, 2006, 05:49:07 PM »
I thought it was a great strategy, honestly. Nintendo has games of different genres to tackle different audiences. Epic, deep story? We've got Zelda at launch for that (granted, it was originally a GCN game, but aiming the arrows with the Wiimote is almost enough to totally sell me on it being buffed for Wii). Need a party brawler? Smash Bros. First-person shooter? Red Steel. Good old-fashioned beat-em'-up action game? There's H.A.M.M.E.R. (which, might I add, seems like a perfect game to attract gamers that are a bit more casual, but still gamers). Disaster rounds it out with a more adult game with an interesting--obviously this isn't a universal view--synopsis. Not completely original, but interesting, nonetheless, and they could take it in a very creative direction.

Nongamers get their thrill with Wario Ware and Wii Sports. ExciteTruck seems very easy for them to pick up too. These games are great for anyone: I think I could definitely enjoy them. This just adds to the diversity.

I do see where you're going, though: I was hoping for one totally creative, perfect-for-the-hardcore-gamer IP that would show off the Wiimote in a mindblowingly new way. It didn't quite happen, but I can't say I'm disappointed with the expected launch; in fact, I almost think I'm gonna have more than I can chew: Zelda, Smash Bros, Red Steel, and more? At launch?

With online capabilities? Extensive third-party support?

And virtual console? I can't really remember when MP3 is scheduled for release (wasn't a huge fan of MP1 and MP2, really), but I believe it's close to launch, if not on launch.

Thank you, Nintendo, for what could possibly be the best launch in console history.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: The Name Wii: Why I Don't Like It
« on: May 05, 2006, 05:51:49 PM »
I thought it was well-written, really--especially compared to the majority of the complainers. At least you made good points, even if I disagree.

As long as it doesn't affect your decision on whether or not to purchase it which, sadly, doesn't seem to be true for everyone. I didn't care much for the name at first, although I was definitely worried about who it would alienate. I've grown to like it on a personal level, but I know that my purchase of Wii games can't support the console alone. Almost all of my worries are pretty much gone, though: people will get (or have gotten) used to it. Maybe the nongaming-and-image-conscious crowd will get over it post-launch (they wouldn't know about it beforehand to get over the name), but it'll probably still happen eventually.

I think NiGHTS would be perfect. They seem to finally have the tools now to make a sequel better than the first.

As for Nintendo: Mario Paint that fly-swatting mini-game was gold.
