Kapp'n be disturbed by this turn of events,
Maybe it be time I packed up me tent.
Me wife she may wail, me wife she may sob,
but I'd rather get an earful than be hit by the mob.

*Revs the engine on the motorboat...

No! Upon second thought, Kapp'n won't be leavin',
At least not until these hoodlums cease breathin'.
So pick up a weapon, search da lost 'n' found,
It's time to rise up, time to take back this town!

I rasstled  this 'er Napoleonfish not one night ago. Took a bite out o' me ship it did! However, with enough perseverance, and a few cucumber sandwiches, Ol' Kapp'n won the day.

Take a gander at this beast!

EDIT: That's not a New Leaf picture! Get with the times!

Just stick out your chest, give your pecks a quick flex,
and then place your vote for Clex"

Vote ClexYoshi

Sorry Old Timer, but ol' Kapp'n here ain't got time to spend on this here beech thinkin' on who to vote for. Have a Cucumber for your trouble.

I'll be choosin' the kapp'n of the oceans blue
Me wife may moan, she might well whine, but I'll be sailin' far!
For of all those other creatures, I do surely choose you.
For who else would I have, as my Avatar?!

33
I'm in.

Also I'll be role playing as Kapp'n and relaying all my thoughts through the medium of song.

When I gets to playin' the ol' Mafia game
I get a tad too excited, 'nd break into song.
I go a-searchin' for people to harass, to blame,
I then place my vote, it's invariably wrong...

NWR Forums Discord / Re: The new Karma system
« on: June 13, 2014, 01:55:00 PM »
The new Karma system should be a zero-sum game, with the + and - points being set. For example, as someone is allotted a + point for a great post, the person holding the oldest + point (i.e. that one which was allotted longest ago) loses it, and the same goes for - points.

That way the Karma system would be more reflective of the current quality of a given person's posts. We've all made some terrible posts (some more than others), but this system would allow you to improve the quality of your posts and expunge the memory of the bad ones.

Also, this system probably wouldn't work and were the karma system still active I would no doubt have been lit the f*** up for even suggesting it.

Nintendo really should continue to do more events like this. I have absolutely no interest in playing Smash Bros (either competitively or casually) but even I got a kick out of seeing how much the audience and the participants enjoyed the game. Unsurprisingly, the fans are energised when Nintendo acknowledges their existence.

Looks promising. It's a shame that, much like everything else, it's not coming out this year.

I like the idea of crowd funded projects, but the downside is that games are revealed much sooner and the wait for highly anticipated ones feels that much longer.

General Chat / Re: would you rather?

Oh! Oh! I've got one.

Would you rather

A) Live in the Animal Crossing universe, in which you are the only human being in a village inhabited by a menagerie of animals so dumb and inane that their very existence disproves the theory of evolution.

Or

B) Earn a living as a boxer in the Punch Out!! universe, in which you have to face off against offensive national stereotypes who are far above your weight class, while receiving tutelage from a delusion former world champion who thinks chocolate is a type of flower.

?

I didn't know she was pregnant that a Falcon Punch would be required.

It was in fact the Falcon Punch to the stomach that impregnated her. That's how The Captain procreates.

Fact: 0% of The Captain's chosen partners have survived this mating ritual.

@Phil

That's pretty spectacular man. I'm not sure what type of game it was composed for, but it seems to me that it would be right at home in a Kirby game. Also, the build up at the start strikes me as classic level 1 music. It sounds like you're leaving the village behind and going on an adventure, lol.

Nice work.

Awesome! The two 'blox' games are amongst my favourite 3DS games.

Am I understanding the cross-compatibility correctly? If someone were to post the QR codes from the Wii U game online, I can scan them and play them on my 3DS without actually owning the Wii U game?

NWR Feedback / Auto-smite?
« on: May 26, 2014, 12:26:05 PM »
I've never really understood NWR's karma/smite system, but I was curious why every post I've made in recent weeks has automatically resulted in a 'smite'? If I was posting vitriol then maybe I'd understand, but this seems to happen even when I'm just commenting on a game I've recently played. Should I seek the help of a witchdoctor?

General Chat / Re: Music recommendations
« on: May 25, 2014, 09:17:40 PM »
So, much like when I see a film, I like to allow some time after a gig before I try to assess it.

Enough time has now passed since the 'Neutral Milk Hotel' gig that I can say with some confidence that it was a disappointment. I sensed a real antagonistic atmosphere between the audience and the band, caused I think by the fact that the band had requested that the organisers put up posters throughout the venue insisting that no-one in the audience take pictures of the band. Which seems like a ridiculous request in 2014. I never take pictures of bands at gigs and in this case most people seemed to respect the bands wishes, but of course there was a handful of people who did not, and the band became visibly agitated; and when the band becomes agitated it's difficult for the audience to relax and enjoy the music. For better or worse some audience members like to take pictures of their experience and of the band, and if bands aren't comfortable with that, well, maybe they're in the wrong business.

'Neutral' also didn't sound spectacular, but having seen other bands in the same venue, I'm willing to chalk that up to the fact that the acoustics in that particular venue suck. I attended the same venue to see Mudhoney (one of my childhood favourites) and they also sounded like ass.

Next up: The War on Drugs.

As someone who wasn't exactly enraptured with Bastion either, I found the first few hours of Transistor to be similarly underwhelming. In fact, for the first few hours I would have agreed with your assessment Brood.

However, I'm now in what feels like the closing stages of the game, and things have changed drastically (at least for me). The core relationship between the Transistor (or whoever is inhabiting it) and Red has subtly and quite inexplicable began to affect me. It was so subtle that I almost didn't realise it, but somewhere along the line I actually began to care about who these characters were and what they might have meant to each other before the events of the game. It was surprising, because I really didn't feel like the story was pulling me in; I suspect that the outstanding visuals and superb music somehow managed to create a persuasive crack in my resolve, through which the story (such that it is) was able to seep in. I still don't think the story is great, but there's enough intrigue and world-building there to pull me through.

And I've had pretty much the same experience with the combat system, in that it's only been during the past few hours that it's finally clicked for me. Although I could sense that there was depth to the combat, I really wasn't finding much satisfaction there until the latter half of the game. Indeed, only in the last couple of hours have I managed to unlock enough 'memory' (upgrade slots) to support the combination of 'functions' (skills) that feels balanced and effective.

Throughout my play-through, however, I have been using the maximum number of 'limiters' (enemy buffs) which make the enemies more difficult but reward you with more experience, so perhaps that might have caused some early frustration for me, and from which I am only now reaping the rewards. In any case, I'm now finding the depth of the combat to be very satisfying.

I'm actually planning to post something about this very topic in the next few days. The two most recent games that I've played through have been Child of Light and Transistor, both of which are very aesthetically pleasing games, both have immensely satisfying battle systems that only make their depth apparent towards the end of the game, and both are arguably hampered by their story-telling conceits.

Both games, in fact, have brought to mind The Last Story. That game had an awesome battle system that was only brought to bear in the very final encounter.

On which point: What I wouldn't do for a sequel to The Last Story.

Movies & TV / Re: Rate the last movie you've seen
« on: May 18, 2014, 02:41:29 PM »
I've got just a few quick thoughts on the films I've seen in the past couple of weeks.

Calvary - As John McDonagh's follow-up to the exceedingly funny 'The Guard', I was slightly disappointed by Calvary. Although Calvary is arguably a more ambitious film than it's precursor, The Guard was able to deftly combine drama and comedy in a way that felt tonally consistent. Calvary on the other hand sometimes feels jarring, and the characters that populate the film often seem to have been written with the sole intention of highlighting a different view on morality. Luckily the script is mostly great and the cast (especially Brendan Gleeson) is excellent.

The Raid 2 - The best collection of action sequences ever filmed. What else is there to say.

Locke - Putting Tom Hardy alone in a car for 85 minutes without a single car chase might sound boring, but this film really struck a cord with me. I don't want to spoil anything by saying exactly how the film is able to extract drama from such a seemingly mundane situation, but the combination of Hardy's performance and the big themes (heritage, responsibility, free will) at the centre of the story made for a pretty gripping film.

Frank - If you've read any of the press surrounding this release you'll probably know that the titular 'Frank', played by Michael Fassbender, is a conflation of several musicians and artists, most notably Frank Sidebottom and Captain Beefheart. I'm not familiar with any of the performers that 'Frank' is supposedly referencing, and can't therefore say to what extent the events depicted are based on true stories. With that said, I love this film!

The characters, the music, it's visual treatment, it's sense of humour, it's melancholy tone, the questions it raises about expression, and talent, and fame, and people's sense of entitlement...I love pretty much everything about this film and can't wait to see it again.
