TalkBack / Re: PGA Tour Golf Returns to Switch And It's Great
« on: August 20, 2020, 07:49:15 PM »
Thanks for answering my biggest question: What is the swing system like?  I always had a hard time with Xbox 360 Tiger Woods and Gamecube Swingerz Golf with the pull-back on the stick & shoot-forward.  I couldn't master the strength with pushing straight, so I never got enough power.

I'll still probably check it out because golf games are so peaceful to play on the couch.

TalkBack / Re: Console Elite Four: Your Most Important Nintendo Games
« on: July 30, 2020, 10:15:19 PM »
It's crazy how Neal's lists almost perfectly replicate my list (Donkey Kong '94 is the best game on the system, absolutely followed by Link's Awakening, Pokemon Red/Blue, and Tetris).

Even places where I disagree, like Kid Icarus: Uprising, he's like, "I know the controls are hard, especially for lefties" and I think I AGREE MAN.

53
Will it work with a Switch Lite if you connect Joy-con to it?  I wouldn't see why it wouldn't.

54
I know Neal absolutely loved the previous game, but it was a bit pricey, so I'm looking forward to a demo.

I'd love to chip away at a baseball game like this.

TalkBack / Re: Mega Man X Meets Roguelite in 30XX
« on: March 06, 2020, 09:25:42 AM »
This preview made me go back to play 20XX on my Switch.  It's so nice to play a quick burst of Mega Man X/Zero.

56
My bummer is now I'm in a two Switch household (me & my son each have one) and we'll likely get a third Switch system for my wife when Animal Crossing comes out.

From what I've seen, we can't transfer digital purchases. My son & I both pass around the Smash cartridge, but couldn't share the DLC characters (we bought it for his Switch, not mine).

If we get Outer Wilds, there wouldn't be a way for us to trade the cart between systems.

57
Whoa...F-Zero X Death Race...but as a multiplayer battle royale.

That's a twist I didn't see, but absolutely want.

58
HEB (grocery store in Texas) has a Dr. Pepper knockoff called "Dr. B."

59
On US Amazon today, it's $50 and then has a $10 coupon you can apply.  I got it for $43 with tax.

It's almost like Gui willed this to happen on RFN this week!

TalkBack / Re: SNES Games That Should be on Switch
« on: September 04, 2019, 10:11:16 PM »
I'm still hoping for a Soul Blazer/Illusion of Gaia/Terranigma triple pack like the Collection of Mana.

I love the RPGs on this list, but I wonder if Nintendo wants people playing 25 hour games and not buying new Switch games.  (Were any of the NES games long?)

I'd like to see stuff like Rocket Knight Adventures or Axelay or other things I missed the first time around.

62
How easy is it to be a multi-system, one family situation?

USE CASE: I have a digital copy of Super Mario Maker 2.  My son wants to play Super Mario Maker, I want to play something else.  Can I play a different digital game on my account on my Switch, and he play Mario Maker (also on my account) on the 2nd Switch, simultaneously?

I'd been imagining this wasn't possible, so I'd been considering buying physical to prevent trouble.

63
That PS1 disc with the Tony Hawk demo was my jam!  Me & a friend would play that Warehouse level all night!

Greg, you also inspired me to watch Crank.  You're quite the influencer.

Konami's site had Castlevania Collection for $19.99 for US on 5/16.  It was pretty buried.

TalkBack / Re: Mortal Kombat 11 (Switch) Review
« on: May 10, 2019, 03:45:14 PM »
I was traveling for work this week, so I took MK11 with me and was flabbergasted how much online it needed to be.  My hotel room didn't have free wi-fi.

Well, you can play single player exhibition mode, but it tells you you won't be able to unlock anything.  So it seemed like a waste to play that mode.

I played Story Mode, and it told me I couldn't get my unlocks until I was back online.  When I got home yesterday, it did just that...though I had to go through a notifications window for each battle I had won offline.

On the story being impenetrable: I've played every Mortal Kombat game that's followed this storytelling model (MK vs DC, MK9, MKX, MK11) and I can't tell you what's going on either.

Part of it that it's very dense. Some of it is that they're spaced 4 years apart between Injustice games so I forget. Sometimes it's clumsily told and needs to be edited.  And some of it is that the fractured storyline with multiple lead protagonists makes it hard to follow (I'm halfway through and there are clearly 4 storylines with so-far little overlap: The Kotal Kahn/Shao Kahn stuff, the Sub-Zero/Scorpion stuff, Liu Kang/Kung Lao/Raiden, and Johnny Cage/Sonya/Cassie/Jax/Jacqui).

My dream indie game would be for the Super Meat Boy devs (or any precision platformer dev) to make a classic Donkey Kong game that has hundreds of 5-10 seconds levels where you die a ton.  Mario might sell more, but Kid Icarus would be a fun use of a fallow license.

That, or Airtight Games (made up of former Portal devs) on a Zelda shrine game. Airtight's Quantum Conundrum was a fun take on the Portal formula, and the Breath of the Wild shrines were basically Portal test chambers.

Or...and this will never happen, Fortnite with the Punchout cast.

Telethon segments: I'd like to hear Dr. Metts' Dragon Quest segment and whatever chaos Syrenne wrought that's been alluded to.

Zeldalike:
Dragon Quest Rocket Slime is always a classic.
Adventure Time: Hey Ice King, Why'd You Steal Our Garbage isn't great, but it's a blatant homage to Zelda 2, and who makes Zelda 2-likes?

TalkBack / Re: Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker Reveals New DLC, Co-op Update

It's weirdly labeled in the eShop, but $45.98 is the bundle with the full game & DLC.  If you scroll down, on the left, you'll see the DLC part is just $5.99.

Super Mario RPG absolutely was my gateway into RPGs.  I read Nintendo Power's coverage of Final Fantasy 3/6 and stuff in the Epic Center, and the games seemed way too complicated for me.  Also, the idea of a turn-based battle system sounded impossibly dull.

My Blockbuster had a deal where if you rented Tetris Attack, you could rent another game for free.  So I got Tetris Attack (which I wanted anyway), and for my free game,  I took a flyer on Super Mario RPG rental.

I was immediately hooked on the genre I'd ignored for so long.

Will the full telethon be released for download?  The way NWR had the first & last segments this week was different than the usual release schedule.

TalkBack / Re: New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (Switch) Hands-on Preview
« on: December 21, 2018, 04:08:20 PM »
This is pretty accurate to my memory of NSMBU. I enjoyed my time with it back in 2012, but it's wholly unmemorable. When I replayed it last year, I didn't remember a single level.

With the recent Mario games, I've found the first two worlds to generally be on the dull side as they ease players into Mario. World 3 is where they really start to innovate and play with the formula.

It's also funny you mention Luigi's momentum. That was what really kept me from getting too far in Luigi U.  Luigi U was much more of a precision platformer, and I couldn't figure out how to control Luigi well.

Congratulations on reaching Episode 600! I started listening in the lead-up to Episode 400. I'm a long-distance runner, and I always save your show to keep me company on the longest runs.

Y'all put on an excellent podcast every week with great insight on your news & listener mail segments.

Keep up the great work!

TalkBack / Re: Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes (Switch) Review

This sounds similar to the bomb diffusing game in Jackbox 2, which my parents, sister, and sister's husband loved.

This sounds even more involved. And a little like an escape room. They're gonna love it.
