Here's the real title:

New Super Mario Maker Advance 3: Super Mario Maker Deluxe

Hard Mode is the only hangup to me, but here's how you make that a non-issue:  Include a Hero Mode as unlockable on the disc and make Hard Mode the 200cc version of that.

If that's their approach, then I'm totally cool with it.  If they really are just doing one extra difficulty and putting it behind a paywall, though, then that's pretty lame.  Either way, I'm fine with everything else here.

Regarding the single dungeon, I'm wondering if it's a multi-parter akin to the DS games (though more fun to play through than PH's).

TalkBack / Re: Kimishima: Online Service Cost 2000 To 3000 Yen Annually
« on: February 03, 2017, 05:16:55 PM »
Keep this in mind:  That is the Japanese price.  NoA has made no official comment on pricing for the online services, and there could be an increase for North America.

Remember that PS+ costs what would be $41/year here, but the NA market charges $60/year.  If Nintendo's online in NA costs $40/year, don't be surprised.  At the same time if we see a direct number translation and it does come to anywhere from $20-30, that would also be great.

I believe the person who wrote the "3 different versions of Switch" message is missing the mark a bit.  If Nintendo follows up their initial hardware with an update later, it really should incorporate the flexibility of the platform rather than just offer the single format a person is looking for (despite how convenient that sounds).  I instead see Nintendo upgrading the existing system piece-by-piece.

If they need to update the Joycons, it's as easy as releasing the new version a couple years later.  If they need to enhance the performance, the external processing patent may suggest a dock with that wireless capability down the line.  Again, new Joycons could allow for this same feature on-the-go.  They can even replace the main tablet portion when it's just not worth supporting anymore, which could be seen as "the new console launch."  And the best part?  Instead of making the consumers buy a whole new system repeatedly, they would only have to pay the $90 or so that the new part would cost.  Meanwhile, all existing starter bundles would have all the latest components and still retail for the same price, as theoretically the earlier Switch would be lower in cost following the necessary amount of sales (which Wii U never achieved).  It would be easy for both new and old customers to stay current.  This pattern could go on until Nintendo needs a completely new structure.

TalkBack / Re: Super Mario Odyssey Coming to Switch Holiday 2017

This may be my most anticipated Switch title (Zelda and No More Heroes 3 are up there).

So long story short:  The only thing to actually come from 2016 that won was something Nintendo just designed an accessory for, and the only aspect of Nintendo that's bright to that crowd right now is what's to come in 2017.

When it came to non-game ventures this was a good start, but as far as game development this was not a good year for Nintendo.  Then again, end-of-life years for systems rarely are strong.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 499: Nintendo Hard Girls
« on: November 29, 2016, 04:46:54 PM »
Gamecube Girl and Game Boy Advance Girl love hanging out, but it's very difficult for them to get together.

Regarding Mario multiplayer, 2 is the magic number.  In terms of designing a level, it's a reasonable expansion to allow for cooperative play between Mario & Luigi.  Add a third player, however, and it's hard to make a suitable framework.  In the event of a Switch Super Mario Maker, I believe a limit of 2 players would be set.  Speaking of Luigi, I imagine there would be a way to switch between palate-swap Luigi and unique-mechanics Luigi.  I'd imagine shaking him would accomplish this.

I'm stoked that they've committed to a whole area in USH.  With said park having limited space, it's a relief to hear it won't be a severely limited area.

Speaking of location, DCA's Radiator Springs Racers is nearby.  This makes a Mario Kart rival attraction a must.  It can be the Back To The Future: The Ride to RSR's Star Tours.

Essential Move:  Open up a Nintendo store on both the Studio City and Orlando Citywalks.

Not from Nintendo indeed.  I fully expect to see the Switch name come up in at least a few Game Awards trailers.

...This changes everything.

I'm definitely with James when it comes to the NX's concept seller/"a-ha" moment.  If not immediately at launch (which would be ideal), said game should be available no later than Holiday 2017.  We should absolutely be seeing a preview of it during this year's system reveal presentation.  We can't have another Super Mario Maker-style delay of that moment.

I find Greg's "budget model" recommendation to be problematic.  Let's not forget that the Wii U also attempted this with their "Basic" model which didn't take long to disappear.  However, this also led to Lorne Lanning putting off New N' Tasty for Wii U so that it could fit on the basic model's ultra scarce 8 GB storage.  With a budget system, you're either telling developers to put more effort into a better version or limiting the game to fit within said accessible hardware.

Also, my mis-title is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of Fire.

A reminder:  The movie is already confirmed to be an animation-live action hybrid.

BTW< pokepal's comment just makes me hear Sideshow Bob say that on repeat.

The screen effect mentioned here from the booth entrance reminds me of something I saw at London's Millennium Dome (Now O2) back in 2000.  We sat on bleachers for a show, and at the end the front screen area lifted away to reveal a whole other forest room.

Pink Gold Princess Wadaisy.  That is a system-selling character right there.

[Cue Barry Manilow's "Looks Like We Made It"]

Seriously, it's been a pleasure listening.  I haven't been here since 06, but I've enjoyed the episodes produced from 09 on when I started.  It's also been great getting to interact with the staff on Twitter, creating that certain personal investment with that thing I put on when driving, doing chores or walking.

Regarding "The Big 3," I genuinely believe Nintendo's E3 2002 conference indirectly gave birth to that term.  They used the term "Game Giants" to describe their lineup, but 3D Mario, Zelda and Metroid all had a new game being shown off.  The press ran with that and started reporting those as "The Big 3."  When the Wii launched with a game in each series, it was assumed that said qualification didn't change, but we're all too aware that Metroid didn't get as much support then as during that Prime Trilogy period.  If Nintendo had ever ran with that mindset, it clearly didn't persist past one generation.

TalkBack / Re: Star Fox Guard (Wii U) Review
« on: May 01, 2016, 06:36:21 PM »
This is definitely something that would've been on the disc 10 years ago.  That said, it's a fun bonus, and anyone getting the game right now should consider getting it (for physical it's guaranteed, of course).  I'll look forward to unlocking the hover camera and other such things.

Update:  Nintendo denied it.  They "plan" to continue production over the fiscal year and beyond.  However, they also planned on 3DS never getting another version, and we all know what happened there.  It's not their plan now to get rid of it quickly, but that's the natural order of hardware generations (with rare exceptions, like the PS2):  The confirmation of a new system's arrival kills the former platform.  The same thing happened for Nintendo with their "third pillar strategy" where the DS just became the sole portable.

When it comes to the anime OST, "Tears After Cloudy Weather" has to come up.  Still get feels from that one.

Another favorite of mine:  "Who Is Stronger?"  You know that phrase made famous by The Dark Knight, "Some people just want to watch the world burn?"  This is that in musical form.

As for adaptations on game themes, I'll skip to Route 26-28 from Gold & Silver.  The Bike is also great.  There's so many great adaptations on this show! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTlT8Z693ek

I think #2 just refers to all their development experience leading to this game set.  Basically something we could have heard them say about any other new generation.

TalkBack / Re: Leak Debunker: February 2016 Edition
« on: February 26, 2016, 04:29:19 PM »
So update, in case you haven't heard:  All of SuperMetalDave64's "leak" videos are gone.  Conveniently this happened right before the announcement of Pokémon Sun & Moon.

If you're reading this, care to explain?  I know a "Niji code name in a web address" picture has been prevalent, but I'm hesitant to take that at face value.  While I took an "innocent until proven guilty" approach up to today, with Sun/Moon I am now on the "guilty until evidence redeems" stance when it comes to SMD64.

TalkBack / Re: Pokemon Sun and Moon Announced For 3DS
« on: February 26, 2016, 04:20:01 PM »
1.  Yay, we have Gen 7 coming during the anniversary year.
2.  With Red/Blue/Yellow getting Pokémon Bank support...
a.)  I'll be curious to see their natures/abilities when transferred over to Sun/Moon.
b.)  Easy legendary bird catching/leveling, since we've got unlimited Master Balls/Rare Candies.  Thanks, Missing No!
c.)  I wonder if Pokémon GO will also have benefits connected to Sun/Moon.
3.  With enhanced sequels fulfilling the "iPhone S" role of testing new ideas, "third entries" are no longer necessary outside of story reasons (Black 2/White 2).  The lack of Z is understandable, and I'm sure those Zygarde forms will surface in Sun/Moon.

One more thing:  That Snorlax pillow.  I need it.

My consistent "next Direct" prediction involved coming around Pokémon Day, so I'm glad to see that came true.

Do get ready for a lot of recycled info early on.
