Title: Wii U Titles Set for $59.99 Retail
Post by: NWR_DrewMG on September 13, 2012, 06:04:40 PM

Nintendo joins the rest of the world with their game pricing.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/31713

Wii U titles will have a baseline retail price of $59.99. A Nintendo representative confirmed to Polygon today that the price would be increasing from $49.99 for Wii titles to the current standard price for video games on HD consoles of $59.99.

The Nintendo representative was quick to note that this was only a baseline price and that some games could be more or less depending on circumstances regarding the individual release.

No surprise considering 360/PS3 games are $60 as well.  Since third parties are happy to charge that for their 360/PS3 games, if Nintendo games stayed $50, that would probably piss them off.  Of course Nintendo used to charge $60 for their games so they're probably happy they have an excuse to charge that much again.

This was kind of expected, but still sad to hear.

Still far better than what we paid in the 16 bit days!

Dammit, I am not sure I can justify all this "inflation" for Wii U right now. I just don't use my console enough :(

Sad to see that...but hopefully some third parties will be selling their games cheaper!

I paid $80 Canadian for Conker's Bad Fur Day on the N64.  Cube games were typically in the $70 range.  Last gen us Canadians actually were paying the same price Americans were (unlike literally EVERYTHING else which tends to ignore how the two dollars are essentially at par) and it was like a price drop.  New PS3 games are cheaper than new PS2 games were.  So $60 for me is no big deal.  It's more expensive than Wii games but still a deal compared to the old days.

Looks like I'm going to pay off the games first before I get my DX Wii U, just like I did with Wii...

BTW, I rather get the games (I'm into) now, than wait til I get the system, when only games available are lame mini game garbage & licensed kids junk is the norm.

I paid $60 for Mario Galaxy 2 and didn't regret it because of a Canadian dollar fluctuation... but that's Mario Galaxy 2.

I will be waiting for a LOT of price drops this gen, I think.

I recall reading that we still pay less today than we did like 20 or so years ago when you adjust to today's dollars.

In any case, I can wait for most games to drop in price. Only Nintendo 1st party titles stay full price for years and those are the game I want to buy right away anyway. I just bought Uncharted 3 for $20 the other week. Lollipop Chainsaw is $50 now and I can wait for that to drop further. It depends on how much I want something since I don't play games as often these days. I leave that up to the developer to convince to really want something. For example, Grasshopper Manufacture could have convinced me to buy Lollipop Chainsaw day 1 if Ash voiced by Bruce Campbell was an unlockable character.

You don't even need to adjust for inflation, SNES games were commonly $50-60 or more, which is around $90 when adjusted for inflation.

If the gaming market is getting larger all the time, games with similar percentages of adoption across generations (such as a Super Mario game) are generating much more revenue on modern systems. This can either translate to lower prices at the consumer level or more profit at the publisher level.

I think this is going to scare off some of the casual market.  One of the biggest appeals of the Wii is it was cheaper all the way around.  Maybe this made it look like a second class system to the hardcore gamer, but to soccer moms' it looked like a great birthday present.

Fine.  The only thing I don't think is priced wrong about today's announcement.  Though it would of been nice if something seemed like a good value!

It might, but these are also the same people who probably bought 4 Wii Remotes and Wii Fit to use sometimes. Some of them probably also bought that Wii Fit starter kit that cost way more than if you just bought a yoga mat separately at Five Below. If anything, these people will spend more money because they don't know better.

I think I'm pointing out the obvious here....sources are always in the top right corner of the article.  Without fail.

I want to say that at least Nintendo would market titles like Wii Fit U at a cheaper price (game only, no balance board) for that very market but.. they like money too much.

I would just direct them to Al Gore, because they obviously don't know how to use the internet.

Thanks for all of the awesome content today, NWR crew. Appreciate it.

Man, were N64 games ever expensive! I remember having to really think about each purchase, because it took a lot of budgeting to be able to afford games at all. The "good" news was that you didn't have to worry about buying too often because there were so few games released.

The console ended up being a huge let down for sports, but a great party machine outside of that with some true classics released.

Even Nintendo Land?

Yup, even NintendoLand. Which is why the Deluxe Set is a bit of a better value than the Basic. You're technically only paying $50 for the game then instead of $60.

True, but this is America, browski. And Japan's free to price how they want. But. Yeah. America.

$349 with NintendoLand - and all of that other junk included, too. Good, decently priced deal. Hop on.

I remember seeing Mario Kart 64 for £50-60 back in the day, while disc games were £40.

Despite that i've not paid over £35 for a game in about 7 years.

Microsoft is still at 50€ (mind you, HD games can go up to 70€), third parties didn't object to that.

He was impersonating Zach Ryder from WWE Wrestling. You mentioned Browskis and that's one of Zach Ryder's catch phrases (WOO WOO WOO is another one).

Ah, which explains why I didn't get it...as I don't watch WWE programming. After all, there's only one wrestler from the Jersey shore that matters... and his name is Robbie E. OH OH OOOOOOOOOH! :P

Zack Ryder is actually from Long Island, and on a recent episode of his online show "Z! True Long Island Story", he was happy to see Jersey Shore canceled since Ryder was doing the whole fist pumping thing before them.

BTW, Take care, spike your hair.

Expected, but it always stinks when prices go up. Though I think we could still see some games at $50, such as Nintendo Land and similar games.

YOU JUST GOT METTS'D!

As far as my thoughts on the whole price change thing goes, yeah, I thought it would happen. I mean, seriously, did anyone expect that something like the Wii U version of Black Ops 2, complete with added functionality and slightly improved graphics, to retail for 10 bucks less than it does on other systems?

Sure, I'm kinda disappointed, but it was going to happen. And while 10 dollars may not seem like much, it can really kill the impulse buy.

The majority of us that reply to these stories don't get the news from the main page and come here directly through the forums, so if it's not in the OP, then we won't even know you bothered.
