Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 221: Prelude to Epicness
« on: November 30, 2010, 10:41:06 AM »
My love for The World Ends With You is profound. It took me a couple of attempts to get into just because it's so complicated -- I had to force myself to stick with it, and now it's probably my favorite DS title of all time, up there with Elite Beat Agents.

I love the art style. (If concept art interests you at all, there's an official WEWY deviant art page.) I love the soundtrack and bought it from iTunes. I love the story; there are some amazing "Who shot JR?" cliffhanger day-ends. I even had fun buying food and clothing. Even not playing it was fun -- I loved carrying around the DS in sleep mode and "mingling." The one thing I don't love is Tin Pin Slammer; I'm unspeakably bad at it.

But yeah, it's a WEWY lovefest at my house.

Hey all -- been lurking for a while but I was just had to share...

Just got home from Target in Cleveland with Sin and Punishment: Star Successor for $10 new and Red Steel 2 (game only) for $7.50. They also had Green Day Rockband for $7.50, but I'm just not a fan.

Sad in a way... shovelware like Chicken Blaster and Chuck E Cheese Party Games is selling for $15.

Seriously jazzed for S&P2...

P.S. Greg, thanks for the awesome editing. I love how much work you put into making the cast top-notch. I can't tell you how many times I've used the chapter feature to jump around. I wish every podcast put in that kind of work.

Funny, I was going to post just about the exact same thing yesterday, word for word. I was listening on my work PC (no iTunes) and was really missing the awesome chapter markers and wondering why more podcasts aren't made with the same level of craftsmanship. So, yes, enhanced podcasts: one more reason to love Greg.

P.S. A great game for the four-year-old co-op gamer is of course Boom Blox.

Loved the bit on Shiren. I haven't played it (yet), but I had very similar experiences and reactions to Izuna (which I began playing never having heard the term "Rogue-like"). But yeah, very similar reaction. Once I wrapped my head around the concept I found it really compelling. There was definitely some behavioral conditioning going on while I played -- I had to have my hand slapped a lot before I figured out that caution was actually a virtue that's rewarded in these games. And while it's frustrating at first, it becomes very satisfying to face up to some randomly generated circumstance and realize you just have to back off if you want to keep what you have.

Hell yes, Bleach: Dark Souls! I love that little game.

I picked it up new knowing virtually nothing about the manga/anime; which is problematic, since in the story mode there's a clever triva contest. The "floor" of the dojo is divided into two tiles (true or false), and you have seconds to fight your way to the correct tile after being asked a question; wherever your body lands when the buzzer sounds, that's your answer. There are also nifty "decks" you can create to assist you. For example, you can tap a card to prevent the opponent from swapping between the two planes, or tap another card to stop the timer.

I'm now a total Bleach-head, but you don't have to be to appreciate the game.

P.S. I didn't know what a Rogue-like was when I purchased Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja, but once I wrapped my head around the concept, damn, I really enjoyed it. That is, until my cartridge died. That's right: usually in a Rogue-like you die and lose all your items; me, I got to the bonus dungeon at the end, and then my cartridge died and I really did lose everything.

That
I can't wait to hear everyone's reaction to the intro.

That was the single greatest thing I've ever heard.

Other game sites? You can't touch this.

Hell yes! I finally beat this game this morning. I got it for my birthday last November, so it only took me a year. How you reviewers blow through these games in a matter of days utterly escapes me.

This is the first FF game I ever played, and damn, was I humbled. I had put it away for months after getting to the moon (the first trip there) and having my ass served to me endlessly by those fruit-flavored space jellyfish. And then it sat on my shelf, taunting me. And then began... the grinding. Good God, so much grinding.

As an FF n00b, I've gotta ask... how did anyone ever get through these games back in the day without an online walkthrough? Seriously: hidden paths, backtracking, teleports, 10 million enemies, each with different weaknesses, bosses with ridiculous insta-kill powers...

Hmmm, what next? I have FF V and VI for Gameboy Advance on hand, as well as TWEWY sitting on the shelf. (Maybe around 2015 I'll pick up a used PS3 and FFXIII.)

In 2009 I expect two basic things from any game: (1) local multiplayer and (2) cutscenes of gay elf sex.

I managed to spend all day yesterday on rails (Sin and Punishment)... the game's only an hour long (without cutscenes), but I managed to stretch it out to eight hours by (1) dying and (2) accidentally hitting "start" instead of "continue" and erasing my progress.

Between that and Star Fox 64, I love me some rails. Maybe I'll give Dead Space a look.

I can't help thinking it looks like Cho Aniki... but gayer somehow.

I took a screenshot too, but mine has the bonus Axe popup ad that reads, "IS YOUR HAIR IS GIRL-APPROVED?"

The fail rubs right off the video onto the ad, it's that intense.

OK, so I found something called "Saint" for Wii at Target for $15. Never heard of it, so I thought I'd search online for reviews. I found just one, a video review, and you really need to see it.

Seriously, just watch it.  I am... without speech. :o

Any way you approach it, Pokémon delivers in absolute spades.

Amen. Very well said: you can approach these games from just about any direction, jump right in and then take it as far as you want to go... and then sit down to a bowl of Pokemon-shaped mac and cheese afterward.

Viva Pokemon!

I just got back from Target, where they had Platinum out on the shelf... I guess they think "street date" is some sort of retro 2D fighter.

« on: March 17, 2009, 11:53:06 AM »
Awesome news... I just bought this last weekend (MicroCenter had it on sale for $19.99 new) but haven't gotten around to playing it yet.

I'm a huge Death Note fan, so I was happy to spend $20 just to have Obata's box art, essentially; now if the game doesn't suck, that's purely a bonus. I did distrust a lot of the really harsh reviews -- seems messing with the art direction (and making it a fighting game) really ticked off a lot of fanboys. Me, I don't see why I can't enjoy Castlevania III on virtual console and Judgment as well. (Same with Soulcalibur Legends; I paid $20 and really enjoyed it, even though it's not the game Soulcalibur II is.)

I have a feeling I'm gonna gravitate to the Gamecube controller, but I'll give the Wiimote a shot.

Huzzah! I love these promotions. I love it even more when I can just pull up outside the store and download it from there.

P.S. Holey schmoley... I just visited the site and learned it's at Level 100, not 50 like the other giveaways. "I'm just sayin' it's a big Pokemon, that's all" - Tiny Elvis

Thanks for the writeup. I was sorely tempted to buy this while waiting for Harmonix to go live with the online store... but I've grown so attached to my Rock Band 2 avatar I couldn't bear playing without it. It'd be like... cheating.

I haven't read your Mario Tennis: Power Tour review, but I picked it up cheap a couple of years ago and, damn, I'd give Power Tour an 11. (Well, maybe a 9.) That's one little cartridge that far exceeded all my expectations.

Sorry lads...  :(

I saw it online but didn't attempt to buy it that way; instead, I called my chronically ill wife and pretty much begged her to slosh out in the snow to score a copy at the store when they opened (which she did... thanks honey!). Twenty bucks!

I imagine Comic Book Store guy showed up five minutes later and bought all the copies on every platform to resell or trade back in to GameStop.

Dudes (and Ms Phoenix) -- MicroCenter's selling GH:WT (game only) for $19.99 (Wii, PS3 and Xbox) this weekend. I just dispatched the missus to score a copy.

If you don't have it yet, you might want to hit up microcenter.com and grab it quickly.

Funny how there were 7 of us racing, and we were voting for 7 different tracks every single time.

Can't we all just get along?
