Nintendo Gaming / Re: What do you want in the next Zelda game?
« on: May 31, 2013, 10:03:26 PM »
Yes, every franchise has their own structure, or their own core components, but the thing is, recent Zelda's have been following a structure that they don't have to follow. The whole "3 things, mild twist, 5-7 more things" structure is not what makes Zelda, Zelda. Majora's Mask didn't do that. And it's still just as Zelda as any other. The original didn't do that. Wind Waker kind of did it, but still did it differently. The real core of the franchise is basically exploration+dungeons+items. There's so much that you can do with just those 3 things that it is kind of sad to see them following such a rigid structure. I really hope the next Zelda follows through and it really is a less linear experience like they said they wanted. And it would be really cool to see a genuine new villain. Zant and Girahim were cool. But it bugged me that they had to take the backseat when the "real" villain emerged (Ganondorf and a guy who basically is Ganondorf). At least in WW you knew it was Ganondorf from the beginning, and he was still fairly new.

So yeah, less linearity/different structure. New villain. (And get rid of the slingshot and just give me the bow right away.)

The point is that with certain games the LP can be seen as an alternative to buying the game, much like watching a movie online for free is an alternative to buying the movie. And if that's the case, they can't really be considered fair use regardless of how much original content they have. So, should LPers be allowed to make money off of those videos, or even put them up in the first place?

3
That is a self solving problem. A game like Portal is linear, but if the LPer can't make it interesting enough, it's not going to get enough views to get monetized. Any good LP of a game like Portal is either going to be a speedrun, glitch/tool-assist run or a complete secret + alternate solution + commentary run. Then there are your internet stars that have their own fan bases that do things like drunk runs or non-gamer blind/fail runs that can be quite funny and different. Plus for videogames we don't really know where the line is when something becomes a transformative work.

While previously the problem by in large solved itself by using the number of views as the base metric, the new framework makes no distinction how unique something is. While the previous regime might have been sided somewhat towards LPs, the new one is completely onesided for Nintendo. If you were to look into the "Justness" or "Fairness" of the situation the former is more fair than the latter.

Ultimately, I agree. But at the same time... No one has any reason to play or buy portal after having watched an LP of it. So regardless of original content or fair use or any of that stuff, it's most likely detrimental to sales in the case of certain games.

Are you a Nintendo gamer only?

Again with this guy. Please try to make at least one post that doesn't make you sound like an ass.

I had forgotten that you could do that with the 360. Because, you know, nobody used it. Because when we wanted to play a game on someone else's system we just took the disk over. I remember we tried to do it once and it took forever and was a total pain.

The reason I doubted you is because lots of news coming out about the xbox one is pointing towards this not being a possibility. At least not without a fee. News is still unclear on all the details though.

It's actually pretty neat because this will also save your progress, your XP and achievements and stuff you got while playing on someone else's console.

It will for sure? Or are you just assuming? Because I haven't heard of this anywhere.

Ok... so I CAN play it at a friend's, because I can link to my account? But I can't just use the disk? I guess that's not horrible. Still annoying and tedious and doesn't make this an attractive product.

One of the worst console reveals ever. 30 minutes in before games are even mentioned. Games were either generic or multiplatform.

TV, TV, TV, TV.

So it's a glorified, motion-controlled DVR with Skype? Big whoop. And COD: Ghosts? One of the least impressive game reveals I've ever seen. And I can't even take my hypothetical copy of COD: Ghosts over to a friend's house to play it on their Xbox One. (And I better not hear anyone complain about the Wii U's name being confusing after this crap)

That being said, it may have been smart for them to get all this crap out of the way so they can focus on games at E3. We'll see how they handle that. But as it is right now... this console isn't even on my radar.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see an exclusive Persona game. Maybe not even Persona, but definitely something from Atlus besides SMTXFE.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 338: Turning Things Around
« on: May 20, 2013, 11:21:02 AM »
Are we going to regurgitate the same complaints about the Wii U launch until the games come out? Because if that's the case, then this podcast is going to become very repetitive until August.

Making the same complaints over and over and over again is not going to make these games come out any sooner. "Give us these games. Give us these games." Give you what games? Games that aren't finished? Look, it's a sucky situation, it has been for a while. But you guys act like Nintendo is sitting around doing nothing, rather than what they are actually doing. They're busy making these games that you all want to play.

As much as it sucks, the time for complaining about this issue has passed. They know the complaints. They've heard the complaints. They've blatantly told us that they're working to fix things (whether via Directs or other means). The time for waiting has arrived. I don't like it any more than you do, but your complaints are falling on deaf ears, because they're not listening to you, because they're already working hard to fix the things you're complaining about.

It's getting kind of annoying listening to the same complaints over and over, so find something new to complain about please.

Ain't no hockey like Delfino Plaza hockey.

Rifftrax is different. There is no transformation. The commentator's work is clearly definable. Games aren't movies that play exactly the same everytime. It's not like a Rifftraxer can jump in to a movie to change the resulting events without destroying the movie and the entire purpose of the Rifftrax.

For certain games you can make that argument. Something like Minecraft is so open ended that each playthrough can be a creatively unique experience.

But what about a game like Portal? Can anyone really make the claim that it's a unique work when player X puts the blue portal before the orange portal, but player Y does the opposite?

There are plenty of games that are so linear that you can hardly consider a slight deviation to be transformative work.

The industry itself is too big to fail, yes, but EA, Square, and other companies are not.

TalkBack / Re: E3 Demos Playable at Best Buy
« on: May 17, 2013, 06:12:26 PM »
Yes, you goofballs, it would be nice if they put the demos up on the eShop. They may even still do that, we don't know.

But it no way is it good for them to put demos on the eShop and not put them in Best Buys. Hell, they should be in Best Buys and Wal-Marts and everywhere else.

TalkBack / Re: Sonic: Lost World Announced
« on: May 17, 2013, 12:32:00 PM »
So Nintendo is helping with a Sonic game? That means a Sonic game might actually be good?

Is that irony? Or is it just funny?

15
Not the best idea right now because it's just bad press. But still, no one should really be mad about this.

Honestly, should some random kid get paid to sit around and go through and entire playthrough of a game, with little to no original content?

There are some people who put in the proper work that they shouldn't be affected by this, reviewers and such. But LPers ultimately use Nintendo's material to make money.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Frostbite 3 ported to mobile platforms
« on: May 16, 2013, 12:54:49 PM »
I don't think we should treat this issue the same as Epic and Unreal, because as far as I know Epic never claimed to have a strong partnership with Nintendo.

EA has claimed, and continues to claim, that they have a strong partnership with Nintendo, so.... where is it?

17
That's a pointless analogy. Sure a motor enthusiast may prefer manual, but the end result is the same. You drive the car. The difference between manual and automatic is much smaller than the difference between Angry Birds and Dark Souls (or a hundred other games). You can drive the car either way. You can't play Dark Souls with a touchscreen.

Being satisfied by a game like Angry Birds doesn't mean these mobile gamers are idiots. Anyone with a brain would understand that some games can be played with the one input, while others are more complex. They may not want to play more complex games, but they're not going to say "Fruit Ninja and Angry Birds play like a dream on my iPad so what the hell are you talking about, weird videogame guy?", when they see a more complex game.

18
That's how I played Xenoblade. Got all the way to the final boss, but never beat it. And I'm not disappointed with my experience with the game at all. All I had to do was look up the ending on youtube, and I was set.

19
Well it's better than the rich guy who's secretly a serial killer.

20
I just play a game until I feel like playing something else. Then I play something else. It can take me several months to finish a game simply because I move on to something else. I suppose that would mean that I have a backlog, but I'm in no rush to finish any game in any set amount of time. I mean, I own it, it's not going anywhere. I don't have to rush to finish it so I can take it back to the rental store. I just finished FE: Awakening a few weeks ago, and I've had it since launch day in North America.

So essentially I agree with Zach. I don't pressure myself to beat a game, I just play it as long as I'm having fun with it, and if something else looks interesting I'll play that instead.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Wii U to miss out on 15 EA Games
« on: May 09, 2013, 07:13:01 PM »
If Frostbite 3 is so CPU intensive, then wouldn't they have issues running it on the PS4 as well? Last I heard the PS4's CPU wasn't anything to right home about.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Wii U to miss out on 15 EA Games
« on: May 09, 2013, 01:15:22 PM »
I wonder how much power EA actually has to make those claims. With some games, yeah, but what about the Star Wars games? Couldn't Disney tell them they had to release them on the Wii U? Disney's relationship with Nintendo isn't in the pits like EA's is, and we all know that Frostbite 3 not being able to run on Wii U is bs since it can run on the ps3/360.

23
I like the idea of having one console, but that's mostly because I like the idea of not having to buy anymore portable consoles. I never game on the go, because when I leave the house I have things to do, so I just end up playing my 3DS in the house. I bought a 3DS simply that's where the good games are, but I'd rather all those resources go towards the Wii U. So I'd rather Nintendo only focus on one CONSOLE, as in not a handheld. The issue I see with having a console that IS a handheld is that we would probably see Nintendo tailoring their games to the handheld aspect of the system rather than the home console aspect. I think certain games lose a lot when they're specifically made to be portable (Luigi's Masion 2 for example).

24
The only compromise I see is from a control aspect. Every game made for this console/handheld would have to be made with the handheld in mind. Everything that Nintendo has done up to this point have to be thrown out the window. A game like ZombiU would never be made because you wouldn't be able to make a game that makes heavy use of screen on the controller. Because as soon as you left the house you wouldn't be able to use those asynchronous functions. Nintendo would only be able to make games that only use the standard buttons of the modern controller. Sure we'd have the convenience of every game at home and on the go, but the games themselves would be limited to standard controls. And although i'm sure there are plenty of people who would just love that, it doesn't sound like something Nintendo would like. Having the handheld and console as separate entities allows Nintendo more freedom to mess around like they enjoy doing.

TalkBack / Re: Top 10 3DS Games: Two Years And Counting
« on: May 05, 2013, 12:44:17 AM »
I'm certainly not bashing your opinion. You don't like the art style or the music? Fine. You think it lacks polish and originality? Fine. What I take issue with are your factually incorrect statements that you fill with hyperbole and pass off as opinions when they're really not.

"Linear 3D platforming is broken." Factually incorrect. It works perfectly well. What you should say is, "I don't like linear 3D platforming."

"The control scheme is atrocious." Again, factually incorrect and hyperbolical. You run and jump just like in any other mario game by holding X and pressing A. If it's not atrocious in the other games, it's not in this one. Again if you had just said that you didn't like the controls then you probably wouldn't have as many people jumping down your throat.

So, when you use words like "trash", "broken", and "atrocious" to describe a game that, at it's worst, is no worse than average or unoriginal, what kind of response do you expect?
