Show thoughts & gibberish

by Ty Shughart - May 12, 2000, 12:39 am EDT

Ty and his many, random thoughts.

That's one day down; here's a summary of my day. Sort of.

I hung out at the Mplayer booth awhile - they seem to be generous with the free goodies. I stuck around to watch Romero and Stevie Case fight it out with some other folks. (I scored a tshirt and plenty of pictures - gotta develop 'em. Dig that Q3 motorcycle.)

Nintendo's booth was a goodly amount of fun. There were some new games up from out of nowhere (CatRoots, Indiana Jones, that Pokemon puzzler... looks like Tetris Attack. I'll try and play that tomorrow.) ... Here's my quick opinions on some of the games:

Rush 2049:

This had slightly better framerates and more detail than Rush 2 ... and I really liked whatever song it was playin'. Multiple stunt courses; one sort of reminded me of the first Quake. Hmm... it looks like it didn't have anti-aliasing on. A little label noted '85% done.'

Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine:

Billy's got a story to go with this. I ran around and whipped at nothing and jumped around like a goofball. Lot of freeze-ups on this one.

Kirby:

I liked this one... slick camera work for being a side-scroller. I love Kirby a lot, but it seems like it might be a little too unorinal for it's own good. I mean, there wasn't one single difference in play from Kirby's Adventure on the NES. Maybe things change up after the first few levels...

Eternal Darkness:

It's not like it's meant to be played for a couple minutes or anything. The control feels, ah, "freer" than Resident Evil.

Resident Evil 0:

Apparently, this had some weird-ass control scheme set to it, so I didn't get around much. There seems to be a lot of options in the start menu. Otherwise, it's just more Resident Evil. (Which suits me just fine.)

Paper Mario:

This is Mario RPG at heart, timed hits and blocks included. Nice Mario animations.

Duck Dodgers:

Ho-hum. This didn't thrill me. Nothing new.

CatRoots:

Nobody knew where this came from. Not even the people at the booth. There was a copyright to some three-lettered company that we can't recall. It looks to me like a Rare title, but, er, it's not. Could this be the new NOA developer?

Mario Tennis:

Extremely simple to play. Four player fun. We've already got a few rivalries around here, heh heh. This'll sell a' plenty.

Sega's booth was awesome, too. I played plenty of MVC2 (and in two other places, heh) and a little SF3: Third Strike (slick)... I didn't get what the Jamaican dude in Shen Mue was telling me to do, something Parappa-like, but, uh, I'll give it another shot later. I didn't like their Quake III at all. Oh yeah, the Space Channel 5 dancers were cool!

Over in the other hall was a great place to gawk and take pictures... I got a group one with Pac Man, Ms Pac Man, Duke Nukem, and a couple hot booth babes... awesome! Also there; air-borne skateboarders, X-Com troops and aliens (my bro will be thrilled) and a crazy purple-haired Capcom announcer.

People: I met up with Rich (Lowtax) from somethingawful.com - got me a l33t hax0ring shirt yo. I, er, walked by Cliffy B of Unreal Tournament fame. Shared a cab the other day with Peer and Vincent from IGN.

The Nyko booth was fun, I got a rumbler and a photo with the booth babe. Annnnnd... their DC controllers were hooked up to MVC. Rock :D. Although I can't say much for the memory cards, their GB link is the best and cheapest, and their DC controller felt way better than Sega's or those big fruity color ones.

There were about five chairs in the whole center. There was a nice place to sit back by the UGO van. Mplayer had bags of pretzels (lunch).

Well, that about raps it up for tonight. We'll get a huge photo album up when we get back... (we're getting like 2400 bps in the hotel zoom, bleeah.)
