Nintendo Summer 2011: A Rope Of SandEditorial3DSWii

What games should you be looking forward to this summer? Not many!

Hopefully, if you're a Nintendo fan, you're enjoying the solid 3DS launch line-up, the eShop, and the two solid June releases (The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D) that are unfortunately, no matter how you shake it, more or less ports. The summer, specifically for 3DS, is filled with a few decent titles but no real standouts. Pac-Man & Galaga Dimensions and Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked (both unfortunately, no matter how you shake it, are kind of ports) headline the slate of (potentially) five 3DS games, none from Nintendo.

Zelda Ocarina Edition Unboxing3DS

Take a look at what Australia's OOT comes with!

Since the Zelda midnight launch party in Melbourne was disappointingly canceled, I'm going to instead share my first hands-on experience with the Australia-exclusive Ocarina Edition of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

While some of you may know my 3DS is imported from the USA and therefore I can't play this game at all, I'm that much of a collector geek that this was something I simply couldn't pass up, especially since I had to partake of the free soundtrack offer. I've been playing my US copy of the game for about a week already, and I love it to pieces - I'm not going into that here, it's strictly about the bonus content.

Problems with the European Nintendo eShopEditorial3DS

We are off to a great start, aren't we?

As a big fan of downloadable titles on any given platform, I was thrilled by the arrival of the Nintendo eShop on June 7th. Quickly, I prepared my Nintendo DSi to transfer my DSiWare to the shiny new Nintendo 3DS. I knew it would cost me my game saves, but I was happy to have a bunch of games with me. Quickly I entered the eShop just to download all of the Virtual Console games, Pokédex 3D and Excitebike. A week passed by and once I got home, I checked the shop. Once booted it up, however, I only saw Donkey Kong on the shelf, and wondered where the new DSiWare releases are. I looked through the release notes in the news section, but it only mentioned Donkey Kong and Link's Awakening DX. The text wished me a good time with these exciting new offerings and that I should come back soon for more new content.

Letter From The Director: Used Game Mercenaries3DSWii

Resident Evil's first 3DS game doesn't let you reset the save data. Is this a big deal?

I could spend this time talking about the excellent Operation Rainfall and their grassroots movement to get Xenoblade and The Last Story to North America. We've done that already. Instead, I'm going to talk about smaller issue related to this week's (read: the next month and a half's) big release: Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D.

In that game, which I'm currently in the process of reviewing (goes up tomorrow at 8 a.m. PDT), you can't delete your save file at all. That's correct; there is no way to reset the save data on the game cartridge at all. Now, most people's reaction to this is rage. "Crapcom's ripping us off! Screw them!"

Xenoblade: Disaster Strikes AgainEditorialWiiGC

Also known as Xenoblade Chronicles: The Chronicles. Will this game ever be released?

Recently there has been widespread uproar relating to the absent North American release of Xenoblade, following the confirmation of the European release in September this year. The game was released in Japan as Xenoblade on June 10, 2010. It is Monolith Soft's second game under Nintendo, the first being Disaster: Day of Crisis. In fact, they became a first-party Nintendo developer shortly before Disaster's Japanese release. Monolith Soft were also responsible for the Baten Kaitos series on GameCube.

PAX East 2011: The Censored Footage

Boredom took over, so here are the horrible videos. Oh no, thank you.

As we found the PAX East 2011 media room to be a little cramped, the NWR base for the show was the Classic Gaming room. Quieter than Arcade Gaming, more convenient than Console Gaming, and full of old consoles, Nintendo and non-Nintendo to play games on for thirty minute periods before you had to hand over to the next person waiting.

You will have heard about our Anticipation antics (curse that conical flask!), Mr. Do runs (this is an SNES game?!), Powerstone rounds (get me out of here!), Snake Rattle and Roll trials (don't touch this or breathe on it now we got it to work), and many more.

Letter From The Director: E3'd3DSWii

These will be weekly, I swear.

E3 2011 was a blur. It was so much of a blur, in fact, that it consumed way more than just the three days it actually took up. For the past two-and-a-half weeks, I've been embroiled in E3 insanity. I'm finally coming back down to earth. There were some other things outside of the site that got in the way, but that's not up for discussion up here. Now, let's talk what's going on with games right now, at least from Ye Olde Director's point of view. To make this simple, I'll make a list of the gaming-related things that have consumed me lately.

Will Wii U Be the Same Old Game?EditorialWiiU

The RFN co-creator gives his thoughts on the newest Nintendo console.

Nintendo unveiled their new home console, Wii U, which will launch at some point in mid-to-late 2012. Initial reactions from the gaming community during E3 2011 seem to be mixed, but the stock market is pretty unified in their view. They don't like it. Nintendo shares dropped 5.7 percent with the announcement, and have fallen another 4.6 percent since then amid fears that the Kyoto game giant will not be able to capture the game market with Wii U (and 3DS) the same way it did with the systems' predecessors. (Editor's Note: Mike originally wrote this shortly after E3. The stock prices have continued to decline, though not as sharply as they did at first.)

Zach's Gaming Stuff: DoA Girls

Don't pretend you didn't know this was coming.

Surely some of you remember my Conduit 2 unboxing blog, where my obsession with figures became clear to everybody? Remember? Michael Ford with his gun against Black Widow's back? Well, with the release of 3DS' Dead or Alive Dimensions, I thought it an excellent opportunity to show off three of my Dead or Alive-related girls: two Kasumis and one Kokoro. You might actually have seen them in them already, minus one of the Kasumis, in my Happy Birthday, NWR photo. I have since added two more girls to that collection. At any rate, let's gone on with the pretty pictures!
