F-Zero: GP Legend

by Daniel Bloodworth - May 25, 2004, 1:37 am EDT

The F-Zero series is back on GBA, with a racer that mixes the styles of Maximum Velocity and GX.

F-Zero GP Legend is on the wheel of GBAs at E3, and we’ve gotten to spend a bit of time with it. At first glance, it looks to be just a plain sequel to Maximum Velocity, but Nintendo has actually retooled the gameplay some and pulled in features from the 3D games. The boost system no longer relies on picking up a boost every lap, but uses the same system as F-Zero GX. You’ll gain the ability to boost after the first lap, but boosting takes away a portion of your energy, forcing you to risk safety for high speed. Side attacks have also been brought into the mix, and can be performed by double-tapping L or R. The cornering techniques from Maximum Velocity have been kept though, meaning you’ll need to pump the gas to make it around some of the tighter turns.

Although there is still a Grand Prix mode, the Story mode is the focus of GP Legend (or at least is being given more advance attention). Like in GX, each chapter has opening and closing cut-scenes, and the races can have various goals other than placing in first. One race as Captain Falcon has you catching up to another racer to claim the bounty. Another race turns the tables, and puts you in Zoda’s shoes trying to escape Falcon and Rick Wheeler. As you may have noticed, this time the story mode does feature playable characters other than Falcon, which hopefully will lead to more variety.

The story itself seems to be more cohesive than the one in GX so far, but with lines stating that Mute City used to be called New York, you have to wonder if expanding the F-Zero universe really is a good idea. Whether or not you like the dialogue though, the chapter challenges do add some variety to the series. Fans can look forward to F-Zero GP Legend early this fall.
